Chapter 24

Irony of the Rogue Continent

Ace’s part (lvl 53 Illusionist, Philosopher, Spy, Monk s/h)

So this is sort of like a resting chapter I guess? We have been pulling the story ultra fast these days with writhathons and all. So today, I am writing with a topic that you probably might be curious about when you hear it. I’m not sure if I have said it or not, but the fundamental reason people started progressing is to live longer. Normal people live a maximum of 99 years, while superclass 249, ultra class 999, master class 9999, and endless class are technically infinite. However, in the story it’s very hard to find a person who is as old as that, and most of the characters in the story are very young compared to all those numbers. Wouldn’t older people be more likely to have higher levels and better classes? Wouldn’t older people be more likely to rule the countries and the world? Reason why this isn’t true is a little complicated to understand, I will be trying to explain this today in this chapter.

So we call this the Irony of the Rogue Continent. How there are only few influential old people and most of the leaders, strong progressors, people who influence the world and active citizens are younger people. To clarify, there are many older people alive than there seems to be. Keep this in mind as I explain.

First, there are a lot of ways to progress, some ways are dangerous than the others, while some are safer than the others. You might have heard the saying that if it happens once, it’s luck but if it happens everyday it’s probability. Like that, progressers gotta progress everyday. So the chance of dying isn’t so much of a luck at this point but a probability. Every progressers knows they are going to die at some point. However, here, there is a thing called a Dragon's gift box which regenerates your life. All progressers try to minimize the chance of dying while maximizing the chance of getting strong, and whenever they die, they try to find or buy Dragon’s gift box and use it as soon as possible. If somebody chose to interfere with the worldly events, they would get levels fast, however their chance of death would increase drastically than just farming exp. People who interfere a lot with the world tend to die faster, and if not, most survivors will retire early to focus only on progressing.

This analogy works for farming exp and silver too. If you try to fight a stronger monster that gives more loot, it’s much more likely you die. Both from the monster and the people who want to kill the monster. Many people would kill others for karma, exp and silver if they could get away with it, and places with dangerous monsters are perfect places for such a crime to go unnoticed. Obviously people who farm weak mobs quietly won’t get their levels up fast, so they tend to have similar levels as the younger people who interfere with the world or farm stronger mobs. Plus, those people wouldn’t show up in our stories because they aren’t doing anything to change something about the world. They are just farming exp and silver, and we can’t write about that. That would be too boring.

Addition to this, if somebody gets strong, people will notice. Ironically, becoming strong actually puts you in more danger. While weaker people tend to die from untargeted attacks, stronger people usually die from targeted attacks by other strong people or groups.

There is so much more to support this irony, to introduce one more, people with young age and high level tend to be cocky and overconfident. This is a very dangerous attitude to have in the Rogue Continent. This could get them in an unnecessary danger, ultimately killing them.

So older people tend to live more quietly, either because they learnt it the hard way, have been progressing like that since the start or because people who didn’t all get wiped when they were young. This is the reason why there aren’t many older people in this story, they just don’t play much role in worldly matters. Obviously there are few exceptions, which you will get to see soon enough. For now, this is my point. Thank you for listening to my TMI.
