《Experiment 636》Chapter 12- Answers

636 watched the doctor, waiting for him to give his explanation. Dr.Willow watched her closely, eyeing the bandages on her arms. He’d been with her a whole year and saw how much she had changed. 636 was no longer a scared submissive little girl. Dr.Willow suspected she might kill him if she realized she could use her powers without repercussions now.

The doctor walked over to 636, who was seated in the corner, and sat down. He’d been wanting to shed light on her situation for a while now, but was unsure how he should go about doing it. However, Dr.Willow knew he’d been putting it off for far too long.

636 brought her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them and then resting her head on her knees. She was always so tired. The tests must have been putting a strain on her. Especially the operation Harver just did only a couple hours ago.

“Do you know what you are 636?” She raised her head and stared at him with blank, emotionless eyes. The doctor’s question was only met with silence.

Dr.Willow walked closer to 636 and sat down a few meters away. The whole time she never took her eyes off him.

“You were given the number 636. You came here as an infant and the scientists here worked day in and day out to change you and create a weapon. So far, out of 752 kids, you are the only success.”

“Why do you want to make a weapon?” Her voice was quiet but firm and the fact that she even spoken up surprised Dr.Willow.

“We were desperate.” He sighed and ran a hand down his face. “The world changed. Put in chaos before anyone could do anything. Every day outside these walls people are dying.”

“People are dying in here too.” 636 said while fidgeting with her bracelet.

“Yes, I suppose you're right. But the difference between what’s happening in here and out there is we never have the intention of killing. If we can prevent it, we do.”

636 scoffed at him and turned away.

“I know it may seem… hypocritical and pointless to you but I want you to understand how desperate we were. How desperate we are for something that can protect us. That’s why you were created 636.” Desperate was a good way to describe him. “This is not my idea of doing things, believe me. But I didn’t have a choice.”

636 ignored his plea. “What did you guys do to me? Why can I…” she trailed off.

“Control gravity at an extremely focused level?” Dr.Willow finished for her. She nodded, not completely sure what that meant.

“The serum that we gave you until you were fourteen is called Sallice. It’s a complicated chemical compound and a whole different experiment altogether. It was created from the creatures that emerged and threw our world into chaos years ago and different concoctions already existing at the time. The idea was to give it to someone to improve their physical abilities but they soon realized it was going to be a lot more difficult than giving someone a simple shot. The body would reject it and sometimes the operation would end in the patient's demise. So a new project was proposed. They’d take young children and redesign their bodies to fit the serum. Work with the Sallice instead of against it. We gave you all small samples every day until your bodies could take more and each year the dosage would increase. Although even then, some weren’t compatible with the Sallice.

“Then came the operation to get your hearts to produce the Sallice themselves. A complicated and difficult task and many scientists were in over their heads. But desperate times call for desperate measures. That’s why your blood now has a mix of the serum in it. Your heart was changed to produce the Sallice on its own without our help. But we never dreamed it would give you more than just physical strength and heightened senses. To think, a fifteen year old girl can manipulate gravity.” He smiled in amazement but 636 didn’t think it was that great. The whole idea of her being a ‘success’ made her sick to her stomach.

She didn’t want to be anyone’s weapon or protect any of the psychos who experimented on her over the past fifteen years. Not even Dr.Willow. 636 would not continue to be their tool. She’d die before she let that happen.

“There were, however, some drawbacks to your power.” 636 absentmindedly ran a hand down her bandaged arms. “Your body started to reject the Sallice. The implants we put in should take away the pain and stabilize your body.” Dr.Willow scanned the bandages on her arms. “I’m sorry about the operation but you have to understand that it was necessary.”

636 remained silent. He had given her answers but the one thing she really wanted to know he still hadn’t told her.

“Do you know my name?” Dr.Willow scrunched his brows and 636 continued pushing. “My real name. Not some number you guys gave me. I want to know the name my mother gave me.”

Dr.Willow shook his head. “Your mother, to my knowledge, never told any of us your name. I don’t know it.”

“But you did know my mother?” 636 questioned. At this point she’d take anything she could get.

“Not personally, no.” 636’s heart sank but she continued pushing for more information.

“You knew of her.” She waited for the doctor to answer. But as time went on she grew unsure. He might not even want to.

“I only know she was one of the people who we got children from.”

636 paused. Why would her mom give these people children? She had to have known what would happen to them. “Did she give the kids willingly or did you steal them?” She accused Dr.Willow who was visibly showing his discomfort.

“Your mother did not want to give up any of her kids. Especially you and your twin brother. You two had just been born and she feared you would not make it.” Dr.Willow looked down ashamed.

636 wasn’t sure if she heard him correctly. She had a brother and even multiple siblings she had no idea ever existed. She had gone her whole life completely oblivious. There was an ache in her heart and a feeling she could only describe as intense shock.

Not only had these people taken her from her mother. They took her away from her family. It didn’t matter that she didn’t know them. The idea or even the possibility of her having a family and being ripped away from them made her want to cry. Scream. Do anything but sit on the ground of her cage.

“What happened to them? My siblings.” He furthered his brows and looked a bit distraught. Dr.Willow balled his fists and got up. He started walking away and 636 shot up to follow him but he closed the cage door before she could reach him.

Dr. Willow closed his eyes and whispered an apology to 636. “I’ll come back tomorrow. Harver wants to start training you.”

He left and 636 was once again left alone in her dark cell. The sound of distant heartbeats told her guards were still on standby, ready to shoot her if she got out of line. 636 sank back down on the ground of her cell leaning on the bars. She silently cried herself to sleep.
