《I'm the Best Rune Programmer in a New World!》Chapter 33: Inside the House

I stared at the grid of lasers.
What to do... What to do... I could probably build some sort of device to help me here. Hmm. I can't think of anything with the Runes I currently have. I'm gonna look at this from a different angle. What would happen if I set off the alarm. There'd probably be a really loud noise or something that would call all the guards over. Wait the guards...
I chuckled to myself.
Ha! What guards? I took them all out. Ah, that's funny. Even if there are more guards I can probably take them out just as easily as the others. I should make sure it won't hurt me though. It could be a very powerful laser as well as an alarm system.
I picked up a tiny pebble from the floor, someone had probably tracked it in from outside and threw it at the web of lasers.
As the pebble crossed one of the beams of light I tensed up, ready for anything and everything that might be thrown my way.
Well. Most things... Some things.
I breathed a sigh of relief as the pebble passed through the lasers unharmed but my relief quickly turned into annoyance as an annoying wail started up.
This is more annoying than the bird. Damn, I've gotta shut this off or I'll go insane.
I searched around the room and at the other end, I found what looked to be what was supplying power to the program.
I guess I'm a bit unique in the low to nil power consumption of my programs. Interesting.
I stabbed open the box with my dagger and looked inside it. To my surprise and shock, there was some sort of glowing sphere in it. It was very small but seemed to gleam with power.

Welp, I'm definitely taking this. It has to be valuable. Also, It'll shut that stupid alarm up.
As soon as I removed the mysterious orb from the box the droning of the alarm shut off and I almost smiled at the silence.
Ah, just the way I like it. Nice and quiet. In my opinion, if you're sneaking around someone's house it should be quiet. Otherwise well, you're not sneaking.
The last alarm system has been disabled I walked up to the final door. A normal wooden looking one. It was cracked slightly open.
I guess after all that he didn't see it necessary to lock his door. That sounds kind of stupid to me I mean it takes like 3 seconds but I'm not gonna complain about him making it easier for me.
I stepped through the wooden door and into a majestic-looking corridor, with rooms branching out and likely leading to other immaculately adorned rooms. A carpet that looked gilded lay on the floor featuring a captivating pattern of deep reds, blues, and golds.
Damn. This guy didn't skimp on his house budget. I should take some stuff while I'm here. He's a criminal anyway so it's not like he needs them in jail. I should keep an eye out for the really valuable small stuff then as I look for the evidence I need.
So I set out and explored Scott Crawford's very expensive-looking home. A few rooms into my escapade I came across what looked to be his bedroom from the King-sized bed that took up a large portion of the room's space. And the room's floor was made out of a really fine-looking wood as you could practically see each individual grain and knot in the wood. Next to it was a cabinet of some very expensive-looking models, however. It was filled with tons of tiny models made out of gold. I scrambled to fit them into my pockets and they made a pleasing tinkling sound as I moved about the room.

These gold models should give me enough funs to last a while. Thanks, Scott!
I continued looking around the room trying to find a safe or something similar.
Scott would hide sensitive and important stuff in his room. It makes sense since he'd be close to it most of the time.
I looked throughout the room until the only spot I hadn't looked was under the bed. I crouched and squinted. Trying to see everything under the bed was a bit harder than I thought it'd be since the bed was casting a massive shadow under it. I scanned my eyes over the floorboards looking for any inconsistencies.
Then something caught my eye. A knot in the wood seemed to suddenly cut off as if two different pieces of wood had been used. This was a good clue that there was something under there. I climbed under the bed and found that it was actually not that bad, since the bed was so large and a bit high off of the ground I had plenty of room.
I maneuvered over to the weird plank and attempted to pry it up, digging my fingernails in between the slight gap that lay between the rest of the floor and the one rogue plank. It jiggled slightly but didn't seem to want to cume upwards.
It must be locked somehow. This shouldn't be a problem for my Rune Manipulation though.
I knocked on the plank.

Knocking on the trapdoor again brought up my Rune Programming view already populated with the programming of the hidden trapdoor. I then modified it to open when the program was run and ran the program. Then I tried removing the plank again and to my satisfaction, it worked.
I peered inside the area under the plank. It was very tiny and all I could see was a book of some sort in there. I picked it up and brought it out from under the bed so I could read it without needlessly straining my eyes. I eagerly flipped through the book.
It looked to be some sort of log that Scott had kept. It detailed all the transactions he'd made and what he'd done to acquire most of his businesses. It ranged from threats to all-out violence and was just what I needed to expose Scott Crawford's misdeeds.
Just having this book isn't much by itself but if an investigation is launched and enough of these people reveal what actually happened it'll be clear as day that Scott Crawford is a criminal. Now I just gotta waltz outta here and hand this to the authorities. Honestly, this was the hardest mission so far but in a way, it was kinda fun. I also got revenge for Pepper which is very important!
So with the evidence in hand, I walked out of Scott Crawford's house while everyone else was none the wiser.

Cutting to Life: an NPC LitRPG (Battle Royale)
Nikola is an NPC in The World of Wills, a video game where players can feel sensations as if they were truly there. She leads a life of bloodshed and murder - that is, until one day she wakes up sapient. Just as she begins thinking real, non-scripted thoughts and making connections, she and the players in the game are told that if they die in the game, they die in real life - and it's time to get killing. But what of Nikola, the emerging AI consciousness? How does she win in a game that can only end in her being wiped from existence at the end of it all? - Updates Mondays and Fridays. Cutting to Life is a slow-burn LitRPG with a villainous (later anti-hero, or maybe still villainous, haha) female lead. It's told from the perspective of Nikola, an NPC within the World of Wills who's become sapient and is now mysteriously able to play the game as a PC. It's quite light for a LitRPG, but the system and stats become more of a focus later when Nikola herself can access them. The story gradually builds into a Battle Royale where the players' lives are on the line (if you die in the game, you die in real life), and only one party of savvy adventurers can win. They'll have to spend their time and stats wisely as dungeons promising rare gear float down from the sky - but is a legendary sword worth killing someone for, knowing they'll stay dead forever? - This story is told in third person, past tense.- This is a slow-burn LitRPG that spends a lot of time establishing its setting and characters, because I believe this will make for a better payoff in the end. As such, the Battle Royale doesn't start until chapter 30 or so.- Chapters are anywhere between 800 words and 3000 words long.- Book cover by Vixeona.Cutting to Life is also being posted on SPB and Scribble Hub.Thank you sincerely for reading.
