《The Awakened World》Vol. 2, Ch. 57 : Beating a Major

We're set in position for our plan to fail which means we have no set positions. I was told just to stand around and wait.

Thomas grabs a can of beans off the shelves and chucks it at the Nazis. It lands next to them…and it combusts?! Why?! I don't think beans are flammable. Well, they are, but there needs to be a flame first!

The soldiers, understandably, panic at the explosive beans. They stand up and ready their guns which end up pointed at the whistling figure of Thomas. However, when they pull the trigger, instead of a bullet and a bang, a small click is heard instead.

"Huh. Misfire." Thomas pulls out his revolver and aims it at the Nazis. He pulls the trigger, and the bullet does fire, but it misses wildly.

The bullet goes past the Nazis and into a printer. It whines for a minute, attracting the attention of everyone, then it vomits printer ink everywhere. The linoleum tiles are covered in a viscous layer of liquid gold.

Two more gunshots ring out: one from Thomas; one from Cooper. The bullets hit their desired targets—the roof—and pierce through the two Remnants. This, of course, doesn't stop the two undead, but it does hinder their movements. With their hearts gone, it seems they have a much harder time moving their muscles, which is most likely due to blood not being pumped.

Even with their heightened Dexterity, it's all pointless when you can't move. The soldiers sigh and resign to their fate as living statues in defeat. Sophia jumps down and ties them up.

"Now, to deal with the Major." Thomas puts his gun away and looks around the aisle. It seems that during the fight, Major Inconvenience ran away.

No, wait. I hear something. Faint squeaks of rubber. Rubber boots, and they're coming from…

I point to the aisle wall to my left. The others immediately get the hit and jump on top to ambush the Major. Unfortunately, they discounted the fact that the wall is thin, and thus cannot hold the weight of two people.

It collapses, leaving Thomas and Sophia in a pile, Cooper and I in disappointment, and the Major shellshocked. Before he can come to his wits though, he receives a drop on his spine from Rose.

Umm, she landed on his spine after jumping down from the rafters, I mean.

"Ugh…" His sprawled out form on the floor groans in pain.

The two Remnants are turned to dust by Thomas. Honestly, watching it was a horrifying experience, especially with them sending glares at me as their skin flaked off, and their bones blew away.

Major is forcefully sat up with a groan. He was tied up by Sophia, but the damage from Rose's spine kick seems to have run its course.

"Argh." Major wearily looks between us. "For all it's worth, I'm not a huge fan of Grave's plan." He readjusts himself with another groan. "I don't know if you can tell, but I'm something of a military buff.

"Okay?" I shrug my shoulders looking at the others; they're just as confused as I am. Where is he going with this?

He coughs; a little blood comes out. "Hold on, hold on. Let me get to my point. Agh. Alright, in World War II, a good majority of the German citizens weren't aware of most things happening in the concentration camps. They were aware of their existence, but only the soldiers knew what was inside."

The Major shakes his head a little. "Ugh, you really did a number on me. Anyway, the people were just convinced that a bad thing was good. Hitler was charismatic for the time… And collective fear worked wonders.

If you look at this from that point; if these Remnants had true free will, then they wouldn't be doing this; they would likely be horrified at their actions. They'd be rightfully confused too—what with waking up in an unfamiliar time in an unfamiliar place.

These guys they have some memories, sure, but they still follows the rules—the protocol—that Graves put in place.

It's not right."

"Oh yeah," Sophia speaks up. "Didn't they make a movie about this? Something about Germans attempting to stop Hitler?"

"It was called Valkyrie," Thomas answers.

"How do you know that?" Major coughs. "That movie was made centuries ago."

Thomas scratches the back of his head. "Well, way to make me feel old, but to answer your question, I enjoy the classics."

He looks to the rest of us. "I'll stay here; make sure that the Major doesn't try anything."

"Are you sure, dear?" Sophia whispers the last part that only Rose, Thomas, and I heard.

He nods. "I'll be prepared for anything he tries. You know how paranoid I can be at times."

Cooper coughs, "This is all nice, but we still need to get into that fort."

Major perks up. He almost fell asleep, but he's interested now. "The blanket fort? You, uh, you don't want to go in there."

"Why?" Rose glares at him. He flinches, and groans again.

"It'll waste your time. If you're that determined though, then just steal some Nazi outfits. It'll open up then. There's a few over near the registers."

————————————————————————————————————

Major was telling the truth. We found a few outfits, but they were all for males only. Cooper was fine, but Sophia, Rose and I had a few problems.

Thomas modified the hats, so our masks still fit in the hats, but the chest area is still kinda tight.

When I complained about it, Rose shouted, "Deal with it!"

So that's how that went.

Thomas is currently messing with all the TVs and various things around the electronics section. The mess of wires sparks with tingles that I can feel in my hair. Fire hazards? What are those?

"Look at this," Thomas says. He presses a button on a remote, and the TVs light up with life. The video quality is blurry for a second, but it clears up to reveal some familiar figures.

"So, for the victory party, we'll order 20 pepperoni and 20 cheese," Hyper Thunder suggests to the rest of the heroes around the conference table.

"Are those—?" Cooper starts.

Sophia sighs, "Yep, those are your city's heroes. Luckily, I already called in, so the city's in a state of emergency."

Thomas sighs as well, "Good thing you did that; else I would probably be in trouble for vigilantism."
