《The Awakened World》Vol. 2, Ch. 50 : Two things that move at opposite speeds: Car chases and bureaucracy

After Sophia sends her messages, Officer Cooper gives us a ride in his squad car. I always wanted to sit in one of these, preferably with Maddy in the driver's seat, and me in the passenger seat. But Cooper is driving, and Sophia called shotgun.
So I'm sitting in the back. Behind the locked bars.
"Dang Nazis all 'round my route," complains Cooper as he drives over another soldier. While the undead may have the bodies and slight memories of their lives, they do not seem to possess their reflexes. Every wandering soldier we've come across is shocked at our appearance and takes so long to react.
However, they also have unlimited stamina as can be seen with the two soldiers running after us.
"Hey. Officer, can you speed up? They're gaining on us," I comment on the Nazis chasing us.
Cooper turns to me with a wild look in his eye. "What?! We're going 90 righ' now." He glances to the Nazis behind us and accelerates even more. The Nazis gain a blue, glowing aura and their speed increases even further.
Then they remember they have guns.
They shoot at the car. Thankfully, due to our speeds they have a hard time of hitting us and instead blast apart their fellow soldiers.
"Space Weaver, these ones are different. I think they can use skills." She looks in the mirror to see the blue spheres slowly catching up to us at our steadily increasing speed.
"…Cooper, keep us going straight. I'll be back in a second." Cooper nods to her command and puts his full attention on the driving. I'm amazed at how well he's ignoring to gunshots.
Sophia climbs out of the window; showcasing her spider abilities as she effortlessly sticks to the side of the car. She climbs on top of the car and swings a lasso made of white silk at the two Nazis.

They dodge the center of the lasso, but get stuck to the rope itself. "Cooper, round a corner. NOW!" Cooper frantically spins the wheel, floors the brake, and accelerates around the turn. His drifting skills are top notch because Sophia takes all of the momentum and swings the two in her rope into a building; creating meat paste.
Sophia climbs back in and we sit in silence. It's not like we can do much as we drive. Cooper's occupied with the road, and Sophia's occupied with the Nazis. I'm locked in the back, so I can't do much.
Maybe practice some skills? Yeah, let's practice our skills in the middle of a war zone. What a good idea me! It's not like I can be targeted at any time!
It's not as though I can do anything else though.
I practice turning my mana to water and back again. The process seems much easier after being thrown in Thomas's gauntlet. Mana Circulation is working perfectly.
[ Through repeated actions skill: Mana Manipulation(Minimum, Active) has ranked up to Mana Manipulation(Minor, Active) ]
I- Uh, alright. I wasn't practicing you, but I won't turn down a free rank. Let's…just…move on from that.
Is there anything I can do with Water Magic? Well, there's water in our bodies, but something tells me that falls under two different classes of magic. Body Magic and probably Blood Magic. Hmm, there is water in the air, but that might fall under Steam Magic.
Even if it's under a different skill, it shouldn't take too much effect since it's just a combination away. I'm just going to hope I don't need Fire if I'm going to under the vapor.
If I remember my science classes correctly, only about 2% of the atmosphere is water vapor. Since the atmosphere is so large though, it should allow…

"Huh," Officer Cooper remarks, "the air feels dry." I don't think he knows what's causing it, but Sophia's eye peeked at me for a split second.
[ Through repeated actions skill: Water Magic I(Minimum, Base) has ranked up to Water Magic I(Minor, Base) ]
[ Through possession of skill: Summon Water Sphere(Minimum, Active) and repeated actions you have unlocked the skill: Create Water Sphere(Minimum, Active) ]
[ Create Water Sphere - Allows the user to use surrounding sources of water to form a sphere of water. Consumption is questionable based on source. Concentration differs based on state of source though at a decreased mana cost. Cost: 2mp per cast ]
A minuscule ball of water. As the description says, it only cost two mana points, as opposed to the ten for summoning, but this thing is tiny! While the summoned water is akin to a basketball, this thing is a marble.
I get the decreased mana cost and the fact that this came from the air, but this is really…not worth it. Actually, I get I could use this near the ocean since I live on a freaking island, or the sewer. Ooh, if I use this near the sewer and attack someone, then I could do a lot of mental damage to them.
I wonder how many different types of System Messages there are, though it seems like it just makes them up as it goes.
"Uhh, ma'am? What should I do about…those?" Officer Cooper points to the myriad of golden statues depicting frightened Nazis running away from the direction we're driving. Wait…I know where we're going.
"Just drive around them. Can't risk ruining the engine." She waves him off. He begins swerving around the statues that just grow in number as we drive closer to our destination.
The Heroes' Guild.
We arrive at the front with a screeching halt. The only people outside and actually fighting the onslaught would be Scarlet Sword and Midas. Any other heroes seem to be absent.
The three of us step out of the vehicle, with Sophia helping me, and stare at the absence of help.
"Where's everyone else? I called ahead," Sophia waves her hands in frustration. She growls before punching a Nazi.
Another one tries to sneak up to me, but I punch him in the ribs, and Cooper shoots him through the heart. The Nazi staggers before looking down. He smiles since he obviously isn't dead. Well, dang. I guess we need to shoot the head. Cooper understands this as well and quickly shoots him in the head.
"Hey," I say with realization, "why didn't that gunshot hurt my ears?" I mean, my Enhanced Senses should be giving me a massive headache with how loud guns are.
Aria's voice perks up in my mask. "I'm muffling it for you." Huh. Alright then. I'll accept that.
Rose slices a soldier in two before turning to Sophia. "They're in a meeting."
Sophia stares blankly. "A meeting."
Midas freezes some more soldiers. "Yeah, they decided to have a meeting when you called. Something about following protocol to the letter. They immediately recalled all heroes and police, so, other than the Nazis, I expect crime to increase exponentially for a while. And…the city's under attack."
Sophia groans, "So they're doing nothing."
"Yep," Midas and Rose say in unison.

Legend of the Gunslinger Mage
In 2042, the Virtual Reality game Epoch of Liberty (EoL) is a worldwide phenomenon, with a player base of 500 million and an in-game economy comparable to Russia. Mahn Li, the top player of the guild Scourge, was betrayed by his closest friend Fatty Fu - murdered in the real world. The in-game business was tied with the real-world business. And business, as they say, was war. Mahn Li was simply another casualty… … Until he inexplicably woke up in the body of his 22-year-old self - one week before EoL went live. "Is this my second chance?" He asked himself: "What should I do?" "Should I find a job? A real one? Be a good, productive member of society? Live a meaningful life? Forget about the 10 years of my life lost in endless battles in a virtual world?" "F*CK THAT!!!" "I’m gonna wreck all the bastards responsible for my death! And Fatty Fu! Wait until I get my hands on your slimy neck!" Aiding Mahn Li on his quest for vengeance is his knowledge of the future. Using it, he will get the sickest, baddest gears in the game! The most powerful of them all is an artifact that is a little bit out of place in this fantasy-themed game. A gun.
8 554Heroes Die First
It was after World War Two ended; rumors spread of people wielding amazing powers or mutating into horrifying monsters. Seventy years later, heroes and villains dominate the news and battle in the streets, discrimination drives mutants into the criminal lifestyle, and the governments of the world are struggling to handle the rapidly shifting paradigm. Maxmillian Grants, like any sixteen year old boy, wants to be a hero and he has a secret: he has the power to do it! Except, when he actually looks into the risks and the rewards he discovers that being a hero is not really worth it. Being a villain, on the other hand, certainly pays well. If you don't mind risking being sent to prison and being hunted by heroes and other villains. Max, not being an idiot, does mind both of those things. Instead of being a hero or being a villain, Max decides to take the third option, to be a vigilante! His plan? To hit the criminals in the gut and run off with their money, making the world a bit brighter at the same time by taking down the bad guys. But how long can he actually manage alone? Can he really navigate through the dangerous world of supers and capes without declaring for either heroes or villains? Or will he be sucked into the web of plots and drama that is the life of those with superpowers? (Cover photo by Sebastiaan Stam, downloaded from Unsplash)

8 101Guide to Reincarnation: What NOT To Do
I am Aria Dwestella Monfonte De’Pelier. For both our sakes, let’s keep it to my maiden name, Aria Johann. I created this book so if you ever get reincarnated, you won't make my mistakes. I have lived many lives, but this book focuses on my life in a fantasy world. Some of my tips include how not to deal with dragons, why you shouldn't reveal you have magical talent, and why royals are stupid. I have fun with my friends, become hated by the gods, and become (to-be) empress of the entire world. Oh yeah, and everyone gets tortured. That's what, tip number 47? Keep your loved ones close and your sanity closer.
8 157Sanguine
The Coles are probably the definition of a small dysfunctional family, even if they weren’t the worst in existence; they would probably be lauded as an example of the term. The Coles were a small family though. The father, Oliver Cole, was an asshole ex-football jock who bounced around in small paying jobs after wasting most of his life drinking, drugging and whoring. The daughter, Stacy Cole, was smart, but had many issues including anger, trouble with authority, and occasional suicidal thoughts, and was kicked out of many a school for disruptive behaviour. The son, Mike Cole, was innocent, and tried his best to be kind to anyone and everyone, however his own speech impediment, and slow nature only aided people to bully and belittle him, including his own father. The Coles were indeed a dysfunctional family. At least they were, until they got to the small town near the border between the United States and Canada, Sanguine. Welcome to Sanguine. You will stay. With the exception of the first chapter, each chapter only follows one character. The first chapter is the only chapter in which I will include 'Sides' where it follows a different character. This is a short Lovecraftian story, it won't go above seventeen chapters. Note: the book cover is my first attempt, it might not even remain like it is, I was just tired of seeing the standard 'no cover' thing on it.
