《A Hero Among Us》Chapter 45 "Training Camp, Part 2"

Adrian starts walking back to his house.

Hayze: Wait, where are you going?

Adrian: You didn’t think I meant we’re gonna continue your training now, did you?

Hayze: Well, that’s kind of the impression I got…

Adrian: I know you probably can’t tell because of the adrenaline, but you’ve been pushing yourself hard these last couple of days. Between climbing the mountain and advancing your lightning element, it’s about time you take a break before we continue. Follow me, you can stay at my house, we’ll resume your training tomorrow.

Hayze follows behind Adrian.

Hayze: You’re probably right about me needing a break… even though I just slept, I still feel exhausted.

Adrian: Well, you did just sleep on rocks.

Hayze: Yeah, that’s true… huh, this kind of reminds me of when I was training with Femme Fatal before the entrance exams.

Adrian stops.

Adrian: Wait a second, you trained with Rachel?

Hayze stares at Adrian.

Hayze: You know her by first name?

Adrian: (Shit! Backpedal! Backpedal!) Uh… no.

Hayze: Then why did you call her Rachel?

Adrian: (Screw it, he won’t press me that hard.) Let’s just ignore that.

Hayze: I kind of don’t want to…

Adrian: Well, too bad!

Adrian tries to walk away.

Hayze: Wait a second… shouldn’t you already know I’ve trained with her before... or at least gotten that idea?

Adrian: Why would you get that impression? All I know is that she’s one of your teachers at U.A., I didn’t realize that you were close enough to have been specially trained by her.

Hayze: But… the principal… told me you knew her and her quirk’s origin…

Adrian’s eyes widen.

Adrian: Follow me inside the house. Right now.

Adrian starts walking fast toward his house.

Hayze: Uh… what’s the urgency-

Adrian: I said now!

Hayze follows Adrian; they walk into the house, Adrian locks the door.

Adrian: Sit down.

Hayze: Uh… okay?

Hayze sits down at Adrian’s table.

Adrian: How do you know about Rachel- I mean Fatal’s quirk? Don’t play dumb with me.

Hayze: (What the hell is going on? I thought we were on the same page here...)

Adrian: Answer me!

Hayze: B- Because that’s how I got my quirk.

Adrian looks at Hayze with shock.

Adrian: What?

Hayze: I thought you knew that…

Adrian: No!... no, I didn’t...

Adrian takes a step back.

Hayze: Are you alright?

Adrian: *under breath* She really used it again…

Hayze stares at Adrian with confusion.

Hayze: (Something doesn’t add up here…)

Adrian collects himself.

Adrian: You mentioned the principal before… What exactly did he tell you about me?

Hayze: He told me that you were one of 7 people that knew about Dr. Moore’s quirk serum and that you were the one that told him about it.

Adrian: Well, that’s true.

Hayze: Then he told me that you were informed of my “situation” and that you volunteered to train me.

Adrian: Goddammit…

Hayze: What?

Adrian: I get it now…

Hayze: Uh… Mind filling me in?

Adrian: He lied to you… I didn’t know that you were a product of Moore’s experiments.

Hayze: What? Why would he do that?

Adrian: Simple… he wanted me to know, but he didn’t want to betray his trust with the Moore sisters, so he misled you… he probably assumed that you would accidentally tell me without realizing I didn’t know, which is precisely what happened. That old man was always smart…

Hayze: He didn’t want to betray their trust? Why wouldn’t Fatal and Dr. Moore want you to know about it?

Adrian: Let’s just say that revealing to Ewing that Dr. Moore created the serum strained my relationship with Rachel- I mean the Moore sisters.

Hayze: But… then wait one second.

Adrian: What? What is it?

Hayze: If you didn’t know how I got my quirk, why did you volunteer to train me?

Adrian: Well, that’s a much simpler story than you’d think. I’ve been up here by myself for a long time; Ewing told me that I should take on a pupil of my own to give myself something to do and have a sense of accomplishment. He mentioned that the Sports Festival was coming up. He said I should watch it and pick one of the hero course students to be my intern... he always thought I would be a good teacher… At first, I was skeptical of the idea, but I eventually came around.

Hayze: So you picked me?

Adrian: You stood out amongst all of the others. The way you fought and your drive to never give up spoke to me. It never even crossed my mind that you could be a product of Moore’s quirk serum, though…

The two of them are silent for a moment.

Hayze: So… what’s the plan now.

Adrian: We’re going to continue your training as planned. I’m going to have to give Ewing a piece of my mind, and this gives me a lot to think about… but it’s nothing that should change my course of action.

Hayze: Can I ask you something?

Adrian: What is it?

Hayze: How do you know Fatal? You clearly knew her well.

Adrian is silent for a few moments.

Adrian: We were in the same class when we attended U.A. alongside your teacher, Damien Walker.

Hayze: Wait, Really?

Adrian: Yeah… Ewing was our teacher; he wasn’t principal back then. I was good friends with both Rachel and Damien, but times have changed, and that’s all I want to say.

Hayze: That’s fine; at least it clears that up…

Adrian: Yeah…

Adrian stares out the window.

Adrian: (I can’t believe that Rachel’s sister actually used the quirk serum again… at least she chose a good kid like Hayze, but it’s still dangerous as hell. It’s like she didn’t learn from the first two times...)

Hayze stares at Adrian.

Hayze: (He’s deep in thought… I wonder what’s going through his mind right now? I still have so many questions… I guess now is a better time than any…) So… are you ever going to tell me about how you know the inner workings of my quirk so well?

Adrian: No, now stop asking.

Hayze: Can’t blame a guy for trying…

Elsewhere in Iota’s control room, Iota and Zaire appear from a warp gate.

Iota: So what’s wrong with Ivy?

Zaire: Yesterday was conditioning test day. We ran tests on every member of the movement.

Iota: And?

Zaire: Ivy’s scores were… average.

Iota looks shocked.

Iota: Repeat that.

Zaire: I know it’s hard to believe, Master, but it’s true…

Iota: What do you mean by average?

Zaire: Her time on the obstacle course dropped by 24 seconds. During quirk evaluations, her task was to lift varying weights using her quirk, she usually can reach 600 pounds, but yesterday she only got 400. In addition she-

Iota: Stop, I’ve heard enough.

Zaire: Yes, Master.

Iota: *to himself* Ivy is almost always perfect; she’s the ultimate weapon… Her ability to suppress her emotions and complete any task I assign to her is invaluable. What the hell happened?

Iota is deep in thought.

Zaire: Master? What would you like me to do?

Iota: (Ivy is by far my most significant asset… I can’t afford to have anything disrupt my control over her.)

Zaire: Master?

Iota: Yes, Zaire?

Zaire: Do you need me to do anything?

Iota: Hm…

Iota sits down in his chair and looks at the monitor.

Iota: The only explanation is that something happened during the forest mission. Zaire, when you retrieved Jagger and his team, was anything off about Ivy?

Zaire: There was nothing “off” that I noticed, but I remember that Julio was very angry with her, calling her useless… and if I recall correctly, he mentioned that she cost them one of the students they captured.

Iota: What? What did he mean by that?

Zaire: I’m sorry, Master, I didn’t think to investigate. I had to defuse her anger with Julio before things got ugly.

Iota: (Ivy doesn’t make mistakes… something definitely happened… this isn’t good.) I need to find out more about what exactly happened that night. Send Jagger to me.

Zaire: Yes, Master.

Zaire leaves.

Iota: (What could have happened to break her focus...)

Iota leans back in his chair and starts laughing.

Iota: (Look at me getting so worked up over something that I can handle easily… I’m sure Jagger will at least have an idea of what is causing Ivy to falter. Of course, it would be much easier to read her mind, but part of the trust I’ve established with all of them stems from not abusing my control over them. So I’ll just have to mediate this myself.)

The following day, Hayze and Adrian return to the training ground.

Adrian: Okay, today we’ll work on two elements.

Hayze: Hm? Do you think I’ll be able to get past the first one quickly?

Adrian: Wind and fire are your most experienced elements. We should be able to knock them out in one day, and we’ll start with wind. Your lightning element is excellent for enhancing movement, reaction, and striking speed. Your wind should be focused more on striking force.

Hayze: Got it.

Adrian: The benefit of this element compared to your lightning is that it can be used in close and ranged combat. You already understand how this element differs from the others in terms of application.

Hayze: Yeah, I’m not actually creating wind. I’m controlling the airflow around my body.

Adrian: Precisely, so I guess that means no long-winded lecture today. But one thing you’re forgetting is that you’re able to control the wind; you showed that off using the tornado daggers during the Sports Festival. In addition, you introduced yourself to the concept of using your wind element to remove air resistance and increase the force of your punches and kicks. So, with that all in mind, it’s time for me to tell you what you’ll be learning.

Hayze: What, are you gonna teach me how to fly?

Adrian: No, you can’t fly… you can only glide.

Hayze: Isn’t that the same thing?

Adrian: No, if you were to jump off this mountain, you’d be able to fly by controlling the flow of the wind that your falling body is generating, but if you land, then you wouldn't be able to do that anymore because you aren’t falling.

Hayze: So… I can’t start flying whenever I want to, I have to take advantage of falling or being thrown, and once I start, I can’t stop.

Adrian: Gliding.

Hayze: I like flying better, though.

Adrian: Well, too bad you’re wrong.

Hayze: You’re no fun…

Adrian: *sighs* Anyway, back to what I was saying.

Adrian holds his left hand out to Hayze.

Adrian: If you don’t mind.

Hayze: Oh right.

Hayze taps Adrian’s hand. Adrian's eyes promptly change to light gray.

Adrian: Thank you, now watch this.

A small circle of air begins to circulate in the palm of Adrian’s hand.

Adrian: This element has a clear and obvious drawback. Not being able to generate the wind you use to fight is a serious problem, but the tornado daggers are an example of how this can be counteracted.

Hayze: How so?

Adrian: The daggers create miniaturized tornados due to rotation speed; your quirk takes advantage of that and magnifies it. This attack is very similar, but there are some apparent differences.

The circle of air begins spinning much faster.

Adrian: In my hand, I’m making air spin a circle so fast that it’s actually creating a bite-sized hurricane.

Hayze: Wow.

Adrian: It sounds much cooler than it is. You see, at this size, calling it a hurricane is really for theatrical reasons. Its destructive capabilities are basically null.

Hayze: So then, what’s the purpose?

Adrian: You can take the fight out of the hurricane, but you can’t take the hurricane out of the fight.

Hayze: Wh- what?

Adrian: Hurricanes are known for their destructive force; what are you left with if you take away the destruction?

Hayze: Force.

Adrian: Exactly, the equation for force is mass multiplied by acceleration. Wind’s mass is equal to the mass of atmospheric air, which is equivalent to 1.225 kilograms per meter cubed. This mass allows wind to exert force, but because wind’s mass is constant, what other factor determines the wind’s force?

Hayze: It’s acceleration.

Adrian: And that’s what this attack is all about. By accelerating the flow of a small amount of air in the palm of our hands, we can create a mini hurricane with as much force as it has speed.

Hayze: So what can you do with it?

Adrian: I’m glad you asked.

Adrian walks over to the rock he used in his previous demonstration.

Adrian: This rock is too heavy, but I think you’ll get an idea of what this can do.

Adrian winds back his left hand and palms the rock. When the mini hurricane makes contact with the stone, a loud boom is made, and the rock moves back about an inch.

Hayze: Woah…

Adrian: Trust me, it will be much more impressive when used on another person.

Adrian forms another one of the hurricanes in his palm.

Adrian: Now you give it a try.

Hayze: Alright.

Hayze holds out his right palm.

Adrian: First, try to create the wind vortex.

Hayze concentrates as the vortex forms in his palm, moving slowly.

Adrian: Good, your experience with the tornado daggers helped.

Hayze: Why is it so slow?

Adrian: That’s for you to figure out and fix.

Hayze: Oh boy…

Adrian: I’ll tell you why the daggers are much more manageable: It’s because you have a point of reference to concentrate on and make the air flow around that.

Hayze: I gotcha.

Adrian: Good, now I’ll be back in about 3 hours.

Hayze: Only 3 this time?

Adrian: This one is pretty straightforward. If you can’t get it, I’d be kind of ashamed.

Hayze: I guess that’s the closest thing I’ll get to a compliment…

Adrian: *nasal grunt* Good luck.

Hayze: Yeah… thanks.

Adrian leaves.

Hayze: (I don’t want to sound cocky, but I think I might already have an idea of how to do this.)

Adrian looks back over his shoulder at Hayze.

Adrian: (I like the kid, but I have to keep my eye on him. He could be dangerous… I’m glad he’s under my watch. I don’t trust anyone else to make sure nothing happens. I still can’t believe he’s a product of Dr. Moore’s experiments. It makes me wonder what else I don’t know…)

Jagger and Zaire step into Iota’s control room.

Jagger: You wanted to see me, Master?

Iota: Yes, Jagger, I thought it would be a good time for us to catch up on your recent mission.

Jagger: Oh… uh right… I’m really sorry about that, Master. I thought we had it handled, and then those U.A. brats started to divide us up, and then Darian was defeated, and I-

Iota: Jagger, it’s okay. I didn’t call you here to berate you.

Jagger: Oh… then why am I here?

Iota: I want you to tell me if anything weird happened with Ivy during the mission.

Jagger: What do you mean by “weird?”

Iota: Anytime you can recall where she wasn’t acting like her usual self.

Jagger: You mean when she wasn’t a lunatic?

Iota: You know what I mean, Jagger.

Jagger thinks for a moment.

Jagger: Everything was fine at the start of the attack; she killed one hero in our way, then she assisted in taking down Femme Fatal. After that, the students started attacking us. They drove Clay into the forest, teamed up on Adonis, and defeated Darian. I told Ivy to retreat at that point; I didn’t see her again until…

Jagger goes quiet.

Iota: Hmm? What is it, Jagger?

Jagger: After I was defeated, I wandered through the woods wounded, looking for help. I eventually ran across Ivy. At first, I thought she was alone, but she was actually with one of the students… I think he was on the list, actually…

Iota: Which one?

Jagger: Adam Hayze, I still don’t understand what you wanted with him.

Iota: That’s not what we’re discussing, Jagger. Continue what you were saying.

Jagger: The whole situation was off; Ivy seemed lost in thought, almost catatonic. I tried to communicate with her, but she didn’t respond. Hayze then grabbed his weapon and looked poised to attack me. With Ivy in her daze and me injured, I decided to bargain away the student we captured so that Hayze would let us go, he took the offer, and Ivy and I left.

Iota leans back in his chair and starts thinking.

Jagger: Uh, Master?

Iota: (Something must have happened between those two. But what could he have possibly done to throw Ivy so far off-balance? Hm…) Tell me one last thing, Jagger.

Jagger: What is it, Master?

Iota: Was Ivy’s mark exposed?

Jagger: Uh… let me think…

Zaire: It was. I remember noticing it when she was brandishing her sword to Julio.

Iota promptly sits up in his chair.

Iota: (When I read Hayze’s file and found out his quirk “evolved” at the age of 18, I knew exactly what he was. I didn’t think Dr. Moore would ever use the serum again, so I didn’t want the chance to add Hayze to my collection to pass me by. So, I foolishly went to see him after his second match. I planned to use the Iota ring to take over his mind and kidnap him.)

Iota flashes back to the moment just before he and Hayze met. His sinister grin turns to a worried expression.

Iota: (However, I realized at the last moment if I took Hayze, 1-A’s field trip would more than likely be canceled, thwarting my plan. Hayze wasn’t worth that, plus I might have been able to acquire him during the attack. Hayze saw the ring, making him a loose end, and I hate loose ends. I foolishly allowed my excitement to get the better of me, and unfortunately, I had to live with my mistake. It wasn’t a fatal error; however, he didn’t know what to do with the information of my existence anyway. But now that Hayze has seen Ivy’s mark, he has to be connecting the dots. If he goes to the police with that information, it could cause some problems...)

Jagger stares at Iota.

Jagger: *to Zaire* Is he alright?

Zaire: Master is in pondering mode. He’ll be back with us shortly.

Iota stands up.

Iota: Jagger, I have a mission for you.

Jagger: Yes, Master?

Iota walks over to his computer and starts typing.

Iota: You’ll take Adonis and Yusuf with you; this mission won’t be too difficult.

Jagger: What is it exactly?

Iota: I need you to find someone for me.

Iota hacks into multiple street cameras across Tennessee.

Jagger: Who is it?

Iota: We were just talking about him.

Jagger: That Hayze guy?

Iota: Yes, him.

Iota starts searching through street cam footage to find the last time Hayze was seen.

Iota: It seems he’s been off the grid for a few days. The footage is going back sometime.

The computer stops searching and displays a still image of Hayze with Adrian. Iota’s eyes widen.

Jagger: So he was last seen in Etowah a couple days ago; I wonder where he is now?

Iota starts laughing maniacally.

Jagger: Uh… Master?

Iota starts crying.

Zaire: Master, are you alright?

Iota: Yes, Zaire, these are tears of joy!

Jagger: Why? What are you so happy about, Master?

Iota takes a seat.

Iota: (After all these years, I finally found him… and the best part: he’s with Hayze, now I get to kill two birds with one stone.) Jagger, listen up. Your mission is simple.

Jagger: Just give me the details, Master, and I will complete it to perfection.

Iota: You see that trail behind Hayze in the picture; those two must be on top of the mountain.

Jagger: Right.

Iota: I want you and your team to climb up there and do two things for me.

Jagger: Just name them.

Iota: First, retrieve the Theta ring and bring it to me.

Jagger: And the second?

Iota turns his chair around and stares at the footage of Hayze and Adrian.

Iota: Kill Hayze.
