Chapter 150 - Vol. 3 - Chapter 15
***
On another hand, on the ground level, while the village warriors climbed down the wooden platform awaiting the monsters to drop down in a chaotic sproul, instead what they saw from the wooden platform was a large purple shockwave that was in a perfect circular radius.
"What is going on up there? Can someone tell me?" asked the leader, confused by such an outcome, and it was something the warriors also couldn't explain, but one person was stressing out.
"Baric! What have you done where is Rainhud, Renwick and Draevyn?"
"Elder not now! We couldn't protect them as they got stuck on the platform. They should by now be at Goddess Rebecca embrace." replied one of the leaders, the one who seemed to be the coldest and ruthless from the group.
"You've promised me that you will not leave anyone to fend off the monsters by themselves."
"I said not now, old man! Do you want to survive or not? Then just go back and organize the villagers in case we are overrun to offer support."
"Leader! The gate has been breached." alerted one warrior who saw the Fiends made their way inside the village, accompanied by a decent number of Nekkers, starting its ravage without any signs of stopping.
Baric, one of the leaders from Cobh, one of the places rundown by the monsters, who managed to find refuge in Amphail where he continued fighting with his people. Seeing the monsters charging at them, he advised someone similar to him, Halric, leader of Amphail Village, and quickly settled on one strategy they discussed beforehand on the platform.
"We split up the forces. I take 20 of the boys, while you have 20. How does it sound? Halric? We can do this, and kill those monsters."
"You better have their back, the more people we have to fight, the higher our chances of survival."
Agreeing with half a mouth on this, he charged at the monsters, and started cleaving at the Nekkers who also didn't go down nicely, wounding some of the warriors, but they managed to keep up with the Nekkers but got overwhelmed immediately when the Fiends started unleashing their attacks.
The first hit of the Fiend was a miss, failing to hit Baric, yet the ground covered in snow splashed around sending dirt in all directions, making the two leaders look with shocked eyes at the Fiends.
"Careful of those large monsters! Their power is unlike anything we experience so far."
Yet in the rush of battle, some of the warriors didn't receive the message as they valiantly charged at the Fiends, slashing at their large bodies, making some small cuts in their flesh.
*ROAR*
"Move away!"
The Fiend attacked with murderous intent the warriors who wounded him and from what looked to he an killing blow right in front of the two leadere, Baric and Halric saw right in front their eyes as a shadowy figure appeared that attacked the back of the Fiend pushing it back, in doing so making the monster attack the Nekkers close by, killing them.

"Who came to help us?" asked Halric trying to make out the shadowy figure, and the warriors close by saw exactly who it was, a humanoid creature with large wings, a tall body full of muscles covered in reptilian scales seeming similar to armor.
Its head had some small horns, while the creature's face had more human features, except for its skin color and reptilian eyes.
"A draconian?" asked Baric, who thought about why a draconian would come to their village from the Dragonspine Mountains, and he immediately got reminded by Fayrene and her group.
"No, I am wrong, it is that small rat, but how did it grow so large? Wait, the old man mentioned that the woman was a mage, it should be her familiar."
From what Baric was mentioning to himself, it was clear that he had more information than a common villager, being the leader of his settlement, meant he had more information available about the world.
"Baric, let's help the creature who came to assist us."
"Wait, let me see if that creature is capable of something."
Halric didn't agree with such notion, and rushed toward Vek to give him assistance thinking the kobold would be also overwhelmed by the might of the Fiend, yet before he even got there he saw the assisting creature slash with it's two daggers at the monsters back, cleaving a decent chunk of its flesh.
"Dragon Claw"
It was the dagger technique he came up with after seeing Mathias dagger play technique along with what he thought would be amplified by this Dragonborn Form. The strength of this technique in his mind was to be mimicking what his primal instincts coming from his blood felt like.
"Rising Dragon"
Once he said that, Vek evaded the attack of the Fiend as retaliation for his wounds, and afterwards using his wings he jumped higher in the air getting away from the attack while slashing at his shoulder.
"Dragon's Descent"
From the air, he immediately returned to the ground making the entire sequence a swift combo of attacks totalling 10 strikes so far, and to finish his combo he shouted at the people getting near him.
"Stay away so you don't get hurt!"
Halric with his men stopped in place, while Baric who was fighting the Nekkers took a peek at Vek and seeing Halric look with a dumbfounded expression, he smirked. But then to his awe he managed to see a large flame enveloping the Fiend who screamed in pain, attacking with its strong arms randomly, almost pulverizing a warrior who froze in place.
"Dragon Breath."
.
.
Vek wasn't so satisfied by his combo when seeing the Fiend still standing, and to not lose tempo and exhausting this form of his that empowered him he continued the flurry of dagger attacks evading easily the attempts at striking back, and with Halric's assistance the monster suffered a devastating wounds.

"End him!" shouted Baric who was surrounded by Nekkers that wounded him in that brief moment of absent mindedness.
*ROAR*
The Fiend who got assistance from the second one, roared toward Vek and the others and what followed next was confusing for everyone on the lower ground.
The third eye of the elk like monster opened to the limits later starting bleeding.
With this nightmarish change, the atmosphere around them changed, and immediately the warriors dropped on the floor, scaring Baric's group shitless.
Halric dropped down on his knees before he too went flatlined, only Vek remained on his feet, but Baric heard the dragonwrought release a draconic cry.
"Fuck me! Do I really have to risk my skins for those fucks?? Guys, let's go and rescue those idiots. We have to, otherwise we will be alone to fend off."
Not taking long to get his men agreement, Baric pushed past the Nekkers, slaying some of them, and charged to rescue his comrade, Halric, while Vek continued fighting the Fiends but in a way that didn't fit what he saw.
'What the fuck got into you rat? You have a dead wish?' thought the leader, who got to Halric grabbing his arm, and escaping from Vek who released another Dragon Breath, almost burning him and the others.
"Rat!! Are you looking to kill us? Focus on the monsters, not us!" shouted some warriors but to no avail, Vek was simply not there.
.
This change could be noticed from up the walls with the three young men who recovered from their fight, having a close watch on their magician lady, reported to Fayrene who still suffered the effects of her overcharging on mana.
"Miss! Your familiar has gone into a berserk state. He no longer fights the way he used to.
… How should I say it, he has become more beastly." told Draevyn to Fayrene lying on the ground while over her forehead was a cold towel.
"What happened to him? How could he even suffer against those slow monsters." asked Fayrene in a quiet voice, still suffering from effects of her mana overclock.
"The beasts used their eyes to curse the others." replied the young warrior.
Fayrene gathered her willpower and even though her headache diminished a tiny bit she got up, leaving the towel on the bloody ground.
If someone normal was in her place, they would drop unconscious.
She walked slowly toward the edge of the platform and could see that Vek was in his Dragonborn form, fighting barehanded, and even using his sharp teeth to tear the Fiends flesh.
"Is not good, the ability of those Fiends is something that puts you into an induced nightmare. I've seen it on you two, but because Vek's willpower is stronger than both of yours, his consciousness got overrun by his primordial instincts. Let's go, we can't stay here and just watch, you guys help Vek fight the Fiends by firing your bows."
"Miss, I can't use the bow." mentioned Draevyn in an awkward tone which made Fayrene shake her head, replying as she began walking toward the stairs of the platform.
"Help the ones who got wounded. There's also some more of those Nekkers, show your valiant spirit."
"Yes Miss!"
The three youngsters were fully on board with Fayrene, and they began acting with Rainhub and Renwick starting loading their bows, shooting at the two Fiends without harming Vek, while Draevyn and Fayrene climbed down, encountering some Nekkers taken care by Draevyn.
*Dragon Cry*
Fayrene who reached closer to the fight heard the dragon cry released by Vek who suffered a heavy claw strike from the Fiends, cleaving his HP to 25%, but this didn't worry Fayrene who knew about Vek's abilities, instead what worried her was not knowing what would happen to Vek after he would kill the beasts.
'I will think of something, now let's cast some spells but slowly.'
She extended her hand, and as she intended, started to gather her arcane energy in a calm, balanced way, unlike her flurry of spells that caused her to get overclock, and like an old lady taking a stroll she releaser her spells, starting with Arcane Missile to Arcane Barrage, she only alternated between those two spells, until the Fiends dropped dead.
[Your Party member Vek has killed a 'Fiend' and as participant of the fight earned 365.000 EXP, 30 gold, Scroll of Eternal Darkness Lv.2, Blessed Weapon Enhancement Stone x2]
[You have killed a 'Fiend' and as participant of the fight earned 565.000 EXP, 50 gold, Seal of Magic, Blessed Weapon Enhancement Stone x1]
[You have leveled up!]
[You have leveled up!]

[You have leveled up!]
.
Fayrene watched the monsters turn into gray fragments while the Nekkers were too butchered by the warriors and even some villagers who had their morale raised up by their victory against the Fiends, breathed out in relief.
However this didn't last long when taking in account that Vek was into this berserk state he was, and the first set of action he took was to attack the warriors, specifically Baric.
"Leader, block it! That creature is charging at you."

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
