Ella fell back. The leg catch and sweep knocking her down.
“Damn it.”
“Get up.” Donna’s voice was flat. Almost bored sounding. As opposed to the endless punk music screeching from the radio.
They had been here for hours. Donna seemed to take delight in knocking her over. They were mostly sticking to striking since they were in a Muay Thai gym but Donna didn’t have problems throwing in hooking moves and other illegal moves.
Ella was there to learn to fight, not compete, so she grimly got back up. Her arm still smarted from her booster shot and she felt like crap. But she got back up.
Perhaps it was a sign, but Donna’s playlist looped back to the beginning and Donna stepped back and started stripping off her gloves without a word.
Ella dropped to the mat and started bashing out push-ups. She finished her first set of 33 and looked up to see Donna looking at her.
“What?” She rubbed at her face in case there was something weird on it. After a bit, shrugged, and started her next set.
Donna said something but it was lost over the music. “What?” Ella said between reps.
The music shut off.
“Craig wasn’t lying. You are a machine. I am pretty sure I just beat the shit out of you for three hours and you just dove right into your routine.”
“Twenty-five… yeah… twenty-six… i need to… twenty-seven… get tougher.”
“Why?” Donna actually had a bit of intonation in her query as opposed to her normally frigid, affectless speech.
Ella finished her set, “I’ve gotten attacked a couple of times now. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t keep my head. And, well, I actually sort of have been loving it.”

She paused for a moment, “I had only done ballet before. And I was dead serious about it for a long time. Still am. But hitting stuff is fun as hell.”
“Fuuuck…. I do know you. Joffrey auditions two years ago, right before quarantine.”
“You ballet?”
“Not at all. My sister was at the same audition right next to you and got eliminated in the same round as you.”
“Small world.”
“Yep. Small world. Anyway I am getting out of here. It was fun beating on you, but I gotta go.”
Ella paused and couldn’t believe what came out of her mouth, “Want to do it again sometime?”
And finally Donna’s composure cracked with a smile. “Sure. Just know I’ll stop taking it easy next time. Anyway, off to the range.”
Ella held her hand up… “the range?”

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. Book 1 is complete and fully posted here on RoyalRoad. The story is on break as I work on Book 2, which will be posted once I have finished writing it. Max is a twelve-year-old boy from the slums who dreams of seeing the world, learning magic, and adventure. On the same day that Max learns his first spell, he meets Colt, a noble-born lad on his own path to power. Colt is kind. Oblivious to the world, but kind. By his grace, Max begins to learn under Colt's instructor, even hunting monsters in the forests to the north. Max is talented and grows in power quickly, but as he prepares for the first of his adventures, the kingdom faces the greatest threat in centuries. Posting Schedule: Every 3 days until the end of Book 1 (Chapter 45). IMPORTANT NOTES: 1) This is a story about an OP boy doing OP boy things. By the end of Book 1, there will be few fights that he struggles with, and he will rarely, if ever, find his life in peril. 2) This is a slice-of-life and adventure story, which means that there will be periods of chapters without any action or conflict, but also periods of chapters with battles and exploration/adventure (the latter mostly being Book 2+). 3) There will be NO petty squabbles or conflicts going on in this story, because it is meant to be a fun one, not a high-tension, drama-filled story. So it will NOT be that. If you want lots of action or lots of conflict, then find another story to read because this isn't it. 4) There will never be an overarching evil/villain/conflict to deal with in this story past Book 1. Ever. 5) Book 1 is entirely written and can be considered a standalone story on its own. Right now, the story may last 2-3 books, or it may last 7-10 books. It is guaranteed to make it through Book 2 or 3, and if I decide to go with the bigger journey I have planned after that, then it will be longer. There will be a several-month wait between Book 1 and Book 2. 6) The story contains the sexual content tag, but it will not contain any unless Max and his future boyfriend reach 18+ years of age in-story. If I decide to bring the story to a conclusion with Book 2 or 3, or they never reach that age in the full story for the long journey, then I will remove the tag. 7) There are currently absolutely no plans to make this story into a harem if I write the extended story. If I write the extended story and decide at some point to make it one, then I will add the appropriate tag and inform readers of this decision. However, there are currently zero plans to make it one. 8) This story takes place in its own story universe, with its own rules. Please keep that in mind when reading it and other stories.
