He wasn’t anything like the other young, passionate prosecutors. Those people were fresh out of law school, already with numerous successful cases under their belt and the whole world at their feet.

No, he was the oldest of them all: no one else had his masterful experience.

Ever since prosecution became his destiny, the man had fully devoted himself to the sword of justice. Protecting innocent lives and condemning evil ones became his day and night… although it came with a cost. The constant purging of criminals left his hands stained with bitterness. His natural affinity for analysis stabbed him in the back as he began to recognize all sorts of flaws and negatives within every person around him. And the worst of all? The prosecution of a person that wasn’t evil, and was simply unfortunate enough to be on the wrong side.

However, he soon saw a ray of light shining into his dark world.

It was the woman at the coffee shop that greeted him warmly every morning, never showing a single frown at the work that he believed to be burdensome and monstrous.

He’d visit her at 7 o’clock sharp daily and order a small coffee, whether or not he needed the caffeine. It became his favorite pastime after several months; he was thinking of bringing her some roses to thank her for her reassuring smile.

He truly believed that she represented a lovely pureness of the world, untainted and undaunted by his dealings with the dark.

Until she turned up in court with him. As a murderer.
