Her heels clicked, soft and charming, a small chime-like sound across the ballroom floor. Another breathtaking twirl sends her dress rippling like the sun-dappled waters of the sea.

The night was magical, but she had to die. For the prosperity of the empire, he had to terminate the rebellion at its roots, starting with her.

Her gorgeous dress fluttered as she drifted to one of the refreshment tables. Among the luxurious selection of desserts, she chose a bowl of humble strawberries; no cream, no chocolate added.

To his surprise, she handed one to him.

“My family grew these in our hometown, although I’m the only one that grows them now. We didn’t have much, but we always celebrated harvests.” She chewed thoughtfully. “Maybe we’ll plant together again when I join them up there.” Her green eyes turned towards the sky.

“Ah…” His heart felt a tug.

A smile appeared gracefully on her lips. “I can’t avenge them with a sword, but I can help in my own way.”

With that, she vanished off to another political discussion with the provincial leaders, her small frame straightened with determination and strength. She diligently gathered war support for the rebellion, not knowing she’d just shared a dance with a spy from the empire.

…Not that it would’ve made a difference. The spy was glued to a quiet bench, huddling a bowl of strawberries, questioning if he really saw the world in truth.
