Orphic (adjective): mysterious and enchanting
The mountain spirit stirred from its deep slumber in the deepest, darkest corner of its cave.
When it opened its eyes, it saw a little plant. A tiny seedling.
A small slip of red paper was attached to its root. I wish for good health this year, it said.
The spirit paused for a heartbeat in front of the plant, then continued.
More plants lined the cavern walls as it continued, especially ones with much bigger leaves and some with flowers and fruits.
Suddenly, it spotted a plant with particularly vibrant flowers, and paused to take a closer look.
I wish for good health. The black ink of the paper read.
Further along the tunnel were more and more of similar red papers. The plants were replaced by cooked dishes, each with a mouthwatering aroma and a slip of red paper.
Drifting further, there were living animals in little cages. Deeper down, there were the shining sparkles of gold and crystals… all with a red paper.
The spirit smiled, interested. What else were mortals willing to offer?
At the end of the tunnel, it found a human heart.
