《Talis Man》8 | Just a Little Bit of the Creepies
Advertisement
Time to explore this old place. My room is nice, a little stuffy but that’s fine. A full-length mirror is in the corner and a dresser next to it. The mirror is like a funhouse mirror a bit. My arm moves and then the reflection’s arm moves. A little out of sync but maybe that’s what old-timey mirrors in white frames do. There’s nothing in the drawers but when I open each drawer, it has the smell of an old keepsake box that’s been left in a basement to dry-rot for twenty years. Down the hallway is a bathroom. Down the stairs, I go, and to the living room. Shag carpet. Gross. The couches have butt dents in them and smell like an old litterbox. A big giant window is behind it. The television is dated. One of those kinds that have antennae on the top. The next room is the kitchen. And there’s a bedroom with a bathroom to the side. Looks like Levon’s been staying there. A film of dust collects on my fingertips as I drag them across the kitchen countertop. The coffee pot is full of cold coffee and a notebook and pen sit haphazardly next to it. I flip through the mostly empty pages decorated with doodles. Like this one says, Levon and Tessa forever with a dozen hearts and an infinity sign. Another one is scribbled in bubbly letters, Flectere si but the rest of the words are so fluffy, it’s like reading a foreign language. Which I am. I turn to head upstairs to go through my fishbowl, now plastic baggy, papers but the stairs to the basement are behind a barely open door.
Curiosity killed the cat and I might be a cat right now, as the door creaks more as I open it further to peer down into total blackness.
Nope.
Not exploring there. It gives me the creeps so I shut the door, drag a kitchen chair over, and put it under the doorknob. The back door is by the fridge. The sun is setting on this side and watching it cast shadows from overtop the trees is beautiful. But for some reason, I have this feeling. The kind that creeps up the back of your neck. I double check the lock and then drag another chair under the doorknob.
With that thought, I double check the front door. It’s locked and I’d do the doorknob thing too but what if Levon needs to come back tonight?
Shag carpet cushions my footfalls as I meander up the stairs and back to my room. The plastic baggy is stuffed, to say the least. The white paper with green corners are Latin phrases and the yellow corners are vocabulary words. I gather all the green cornered ones and sift through them. Flectere, flectere, flectere, flectere. Ah, to bend, to move, to will. But this is boring and I toss them all on the bed, green and yellow corners and all.

The waft of cat hits me as I sit on the couch. I call mom again. No answer. Voicemail, done.
Next up, Priya time. I call her. She answers but her voice is garbled. My phone has service so maybe it’s her end. Hang up. Next, check my texts. Oh, my stomach swirls seeing I have five texts from my ex-boyfriend. What do they say? Good question.
Where are you?
What have you done?
Your mom isn’t home and her car is gone. I can’t get ahold of you?
Your stupid ‘best friend’ won’t pick the phone up.
DON’T GO OUT AT NIGHT, TULA LYLA. LOVE YOU COOKIE, MOM.
The last one. That last one. It’s exactly what mom would say and mom always types and texts in caps. Better to hear me with, is what she always says when I tell her what a grandma she looks like using caps lock all the time. But seriously, what the hell is happening? The thought of Adam impersonating my mom creeps me out more than Levon leaving me alone in an old house by myself at night so I delete every single text and turn the tv on to drown out the creepiness.
Six channels, basic cable only. What have we? ABC, NBC, Fox, PBS, and the other two are too grainy to see. PBS it is.
I lounge on the couch and watch a rerun of Arthur but where the dog can talk. It does its job and passes the time. It’s dark outside, so dark, the stars light the sky. I have never seen a sky so bright. I kneel backwards on the couch and rest my chin on my hands. Beautiful. Stellar. Way better than Arthur. Guess I should try to get some sleep. My phone says I’ve been watching this one show for at least four hours. This PBS station must replay the same one over and over and over and over. I turn the television off and head to my room. The stairs creak under my feet and the noise highlights how quiet it is in here by myself. I head back downstairs and turn PBS back on just for the background noise.
Ah, that’s better. The creaks don’t make the house sound so empty. To my bedroom. Door open or closed? Closed. I think.
Yeah, closed.
Chair under the doorknob.
Why am I so stressed? This isn’t the first time I’ve stayed by myself somewhere but apparently, my newly found adulthood is retracting somewhere inside me. All my papers push against the wall, some drift towards the ground. I wrap the quilt around my face and press my back against the wall. PBS isn’t loud enough to drown the quiet. Now that I truly am listening, the quiet is exceptionally quiet. No crickets. No animals calling. Nothing. My room is light with the moon shining through the window. I open the window just an inch. Curled back in my bed, I close my eyes and listen, listen and listen, listen some more. The night is still.

Except one faint noise.
A call, siren if you will.
Melodic.
Calming.
Soothing.
Calling.
I get out of bed and open the window more. The mountain air is refreshing and the air is cool on my face. The treetops are thick with fog. And the noise, a song maybe, it drifts and weaves through the forests and finds its way through the fog to me.
Right to me.
Just for me.
I won’t go out tonight. I won’t do that, Mom. But I will listen to this beautiful chime and as soon as dawn breaks, I’ll be out there, finding the source.
It needs me.
Ring, ring.
I jump. The noise vanishes and I shut the window. Must be jet lag messing with me.
“Hello?” I ask.
“It’s – Mom, she – can you – don’t go-”
“Levon, I can’t hear you. You’re breaking up.”
“I’ll – wait til – morning – keep – closed.”
“Levon-”
He hung up. How is the service so bad here when I have full bars? I call my mom. Ring, voicemail, done. I call my bestie. She answers.
“Hey Lyla, how’s Cali?” Priya asks.
“It’s not the Cali you and I know. This is like, backwoods mountain moonshiner kind of Cali.”
Priya says, “What’s that even mean?”
“No clue. But has Adam called or texted you?” I ask. “He’s been sending me weird texts and then acted like my mom.”
“No, actually, he was supposed to come out to the post-graduation party but never showed.” She says, “I figured it was because you guys broke up but you’d think he would go since you’re out of town. Everything about him is awful so I’m glad you broke it off. He scares me.”
“Yeah,” I say.
“Did you ask your charm?”
“Priya,” I say, “you’re as crazy as my family.” I dig my charm out of my bag but it’s not there. “Woah, I lost it.”
“You sure you lost him?”
“Ew,” I say, “it’s so creepy when you give it an identity. It’s just a charm.”
“Should give him a name,” she says.
“Okay, well I’m trying to go to sleep in this creepy place,” I say. “So, bye but love you.”
“Yeah, yeah. Sleep safe and sound.”
Right as I hang up, I swear I hear her in a deep garbled voice say, “Don’t go out at night.”
But it’s barely a whisper. A little garbled. A little mom like. Maybe it’s in my head.
I snuggle back in my bed and close my eyes. I wish morning would come quick and thankfully, I sleep so sound morning does come fast. I shouldn’t say morning because it’s more like dawn. I open my window again and listen. Some birds and crickets and along with their morning songs is the noise I heard last night. It warms my heart and if Priya, who’s always in the back of my mind has her say, she would ask, what does the charm say about this?
What did the charm say about dating Adam? It said no. But I’m not a crazy person so I didn’t listen to what I thought a deer antler was saying to me in my mind. What did the charm say about breaking up with Adam? Yes. But I did it anyways because it made sense.
“Charmy,” I whisper, if only to satisfy Priya’s imaginary nagging. “Where are you lil’ charmy?”
I check under my bed and I dig through my bags about a dozen times. I check every part of the house and then I give up. I run upstairs and change for the cool weather.
I’m going to find the siren source.
At the front door, I double check my pocket for my phone and keys before I leave this quiet house. Very quiet. So, so quiet.
The television is off.
A shiver runs my spine and I open the door but a thought occurs to me. I was alone in this house last night. I head back in and check the tv. It’s plugged in. The remote is on top of it though, not on the couch where I left it. The back door still has the chair jammed under the knob but the basement door doesn’t. The chair I had under the knob is moved.
A cold breeze escapes between the door and the frame and you know what? It’s time to go outside.
That’s what I do. Rush, rush, lock the door, breathe in the air, clear my head. Levon isn’t home yet but hope he gets here soon.

The Programmer's Dungeon [Progression, LitRPG]
Vincent, a college student from Earth, has been transported to another world full of strange powers and fantastic monsters. Ideally, this would be the start of his journey to become a legendary hero, build an everlasting empire, and gather a personal harem. But no one said that this new world would be easy… After escaping an assassination that accidentally befell him, he was forced to become a Dungeon Master. What will an average programmer student do when he finds out that he can code the dungeon? Vanquish those savages above with his tech and savviness — along with an army of golems? “Wait, this world isn’t even medieval?!” With all the questions piling up in his head, Vincent is set to uncover all these secrets! And… conquer the world, perhaps? The hard reboot of “The Programmer’s Dungeon.” It has an almost completely different plot, cast, and storyline, so expect tons of improvement from the old one. Disclaimer: This is a softcore LitRPG story; there are stats but no levels. Also, the LitRPG element isn’t the main focus of the story itself and is more of a support. I have enabled the reader’s suggestion, and therefore, you can correct any grammar mistakes and typos you find in the story. There will definitely be some that I miss. Cheers! The cover was made by Jack0fheart, so a shout-out for him. Releasing 3 chapters per week at 12.00 GMT on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday with at least 2000+ words.
