《Baron Britpop Blastfurnace》Britpop Takes Action / Leaving For France

I shall narrate this portion of the tale. I had just found out that Elise was leaving for France with Grand Duke Goatbeard.
After Elise retired to her room that evening, I went downstairs to the kitchen.
“Is there any apple pie left?” I asked Amelia.
Amelia saw my face and said, “Why so glum?”
I sat at the table and began sharing the news.
“Elise is leaving.”
“I thought you two made up.”
“We did. But Grand Duke Goatbeard is leaving for France on Friday, and he asked Elise to accompany him.”
“Go with her.”
“I can’t do that.”
“Would you rather be miserable?”
“It would be too forward to ask if I could join her. Plus, the last time I tried to impose on her plans, she got angry.”
“Talk to the Grand Duke. Perhaps he can find a reason for you to go. He acts like a stern businessman, but he doesn’t fool me. He has a kind heart. And he is fond of you.”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, if you won’t make any effort to be happy, don’t expect to spend your evenings moping around my kitchen. I ain’t got the patience for it. Here’s your pie.”
As I tossed and turned in my bed that night, I decided Emelia was right. I would talk to The Grand Duke. The following day that is precisely what I did.
I arrived at the Grand Duke’s, and Snoffduffle showed me into his office. Before I had a chance to say anything, the Grand Duke spoke.
“Britpop, I am glad you are here. I have been thinking of introducing you to some of my contacts in France regarding your silent horseshoes. Perhaps we can reach an agreement for them to make and sell Blastfurnace Silent Horseshoes. It could be significant income for minimal effort. Are you available to join me on my business trip?

It was as if he had read my mind. “It sounds like a great opportunity. I can arrange it.”
“Excellent. Plus, I think it would be nice for Elise to have a friendly face on the voyage.” I saw a twinkle in the Grand Duke’s eye and the tiniest of smiles. “And why not invite the Swifts also. I am sure Mrs. Swift would love to visit her hometown. There is plenty of room on board if you and Andelbert don’t mind sleeping with the crew.”
“Not at all. That is a brilliant idea, Grand Duke. I honestly can’t thank you enough.”
“Then it’s settled. Now, tell me why you are here.”
“I was in town and wanted to invite you to lunch.”
The Grand Duke smiled a knowing smile and said, “I can make the time.”
After lunch with the Grand Duke, I nearly ran back to my estate. My heart felt like it was flying with excitement.
Andelbert greeted me at the door.
“Get Maria and Elise. I have big news,” I said excitedly.
“What is it?”
“I will tell you once we are all together.”
“As you wish,” Andelbert said.
Once we were all gathered in the parlor, I broke the good news.
“I had lunch with the Grand Duke today, and he asked me to accompany him to France to meet with some of his business contacts.”
“That is good news. I shall start gathering the necessary supplies and clothing for your trip,” Andelbert said.
“That is not all. I want you and Maria to join me. I would love to visit Versailles again.”
“Oh, my,” Maria said as tears welled up in her eyes. “I would so love to visit my hometown. I don’t know what to say.” She walked over and hugged me. “Thank you. Truly.”

“That’s wonderful,” Elise said with a smile. “We will all be traveling together. How exciting.”
“Thank you, Britpop. I would be pleased to join you on another adventure to France,” Andelbert added.
My day had gone from depressing to immense joy. I couldn’t have been happier. Or more excited for a trip.
Leaving For France
Friday came, and spirits were high. We had an early breakfast in the dining room before we ventured out. I insisted that Amelia join us as we would likely not see her for months.
“Are you sure you have everything you need?” Amelia asked Andelbert as we ate our waffles and fruit.
“Of course. I saw to it yesterday,” Andelbert replied.
“Good. I packed lunches for everyone. You never know when you will get fed on a ship.”
“Thank you, Amelia. That wasn’t necessary, but appreciated,” I said.
“Promise me you won’t do anything crazy like last time. I don’t think my heart can take it.”
“Trust me, I have learned my lesson… I hope,” I said, then laughed.
“It is no laughing matter. Promise me.”
“I promise, Amelia. I will only do sensible things.”
“Well, I don’t expect miracles, but be careful.”
Everyone laughed, except me. Then I joined in.
“Don’t worry, Amelia. I will keep an eye on him,” Elise said.
“Thank you, dear child. That is a reassuring thought.”
“I am so excited. I feel like twirling around the room,” Maria said.
“Feel free,” I said.
“I just might.”
It was a joyous meal full of happy conversation, but it quickly became time to leave. We boarded a carriage and rode to the dock, where we found Snoffduffle waiting to show us aboard the Grand Duke’s barge.
“Good morning, all. The Grand Duke is already onboard the Sea Merchant II conferring with Captain Desmet. I will accompany you to the ship.”
We made our way down the canal and to port, where The Sea Merchant II awaited. As we boarded, The Grand Duke welcomed us. Captain Desmet stood at his side.
Good morning, all. Miss Boissonneau and Mrs. Swift, you will be sharing my personal cabin. I will be bunking with Captain Desmet. Britpop and Andelbert, you will be bunking with the crew. I trust you remember the way?”
“We do, indeed,” I replied.
“Thank you, Grand Duke. You are more than generous,” Elise said.
“Yes, thank you for this incredible kindness. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see my home again,” Maria added.
“The joy on your face is all the thanks I need,” Goatbeard replied. “If you need anything, Captain Desmet and I are at your service. Just ask. Now, if you will excuse us, we need to tend to the business of setting sail.”
The four of us made our way to the rail to watch the departure and stay clear of the crew who were scurrying about. Before long, we were underway. I looked at Maria, who was nestled up against Andelbert, enjoying the moment. How I envied him and wished I had the same closeness with Elise. Instead, I looked at Elise and smiled. She smiled back. That was enough for now, I thought.
