《The Forgotten Gods》Chapter 124

My movements were restricted again! I just knew that this was Chaos who sent this command to me. There was no reason to wait until I was ready to leave to let me know. I had already made my peace with my home and gathered my stuff. I was heading out, and then bam! Sorry, you can’t leave and go do what you want to do.
I dropped all of my stuff right at the dungeon door and fell down to the ground with my back on the rock. It was one of those overwhelming times again. I had plans that I needed to do, and now I was being told without notice that I wasn’t going to get to do what I had lined out.
Now it might all be well and good that I am having to do all of this. Whatever obscuring the shrine meant! I was just now getting powerful enough that I wasn’t truly worried about the gremlins or the goblins. Yeah, the orcs were a problem, but I could figure them out; I was sure of it. Now that I had better equipment, I was just days from finding a way to read, and then I could level.
No, this was all bad. I felt myself falling into the pit of a panic attack. I was going to spiral down quickly if I couldn’t get myself back into the game. If I didn’t get this working, I was going to lose Lannah to that other guy, which wasn’t something I wanted. I had come to grips with the fact that the contract was marriage and that she was messing with me somehow about the other guy. Likely so that I would be a little possessive of her if we met.
I was doing it again. I was letting all the problems creep in, and then I was adding to it my view of everything and ascribing that view to other people’s actions. I was falling into the trap of overthinking. I needed to back up and break things down and move forward.
Yes, it sucked that I had to do some other task for the Sisters, but that didn’t mean that I wouldn’t learn something or grow somehow. They seemed to have at least a little vested interest in me, and so I should count on them not being out to screw me over for giggles. If Sam was the one restricting where I could move, then I would know that he was out to mess with me.

So I was going to focus on getting through this. I had to somehow obscure the shrine. You had to go through a dungeon, repel down a cliff or swim a river just to get to it. Now, however, they want it also hidden. I could only make guesses as to what that meant, and so before I started trying to make heads or tails of this, I was going to ask the Shaman of the past. If anyone could tell me what I needed to do, it would be them.
I walked into the dungeon and headed for the safe room. I wanted to be on the road as quickly as I could, and so I was going to cheat every chance I got.
“Blink we can’t go anywhere until I obscure the shrine. So I am going to chant for a while and see what all we get.” I thought at her.
“Hunts gremlins,” Blink sent to me along with an image of her pouncing on a gremlin in the grass.
“Stay safe and don’t lead them back here. We might end up being here for a while.” I replied as I stepped into the safe room.
Dave, behind the counter with his glass, looked at me and smiled when I came in. “Dungeon master, what brings you in today?”
“The sisters have given me another task before I can head out and so I need to use a room to find out what they want.”
“Well it is open as always for you! Anything I can get for you while you are here?”
“Just the same items as before. I will start once you bring them up.”
I moved up into the room that I had used in the past and moved things out of the way. I needed space for all the markings and herbs to get the ritual to work. I figured that I could likely power the whole thing by mana if I had enough of it, but I didn’t.
Dave came in a few minutes later with the box of things I needed, and I started the process of getting ready to remember. It was odd; when I was on Earth, I would have been freaked out by the idea of talking with the dead, but these guys seemed less like the dead and more like the held. I didn’t know what to think, they were the souls of shamans from the past, but they also weren’t there from necromantic power.

Once everything was ready, I sat down and started to chant. I wasn’t pleased about the need to do this right now. So the whole process took longer, where it usually was only a few minutes to get the chant right, and my breathing slowed. This time it was over an hour, and the longer I went, the harder it seemed to get.
Then I was back in the cave; all the shamans were around. The eldest smiled and waved at me to come over. As I walked around, I got my question lined up in my head. I didn’t want to just tell him a story again and hope he knew I was asking a question.
“Arn, welcome back; what brings our tribe of one here today?” The tea-drinking elder asked.
“Esteemed elder, I have been restricted in my movement by one of the sisters until I obscure the shrine. Before I got started on trying different ideas I wanted to seek your wisdom on this matter.”
A few of the elders laughed. One who was a few places away called out, “That would be Chaos who asked you to obscure the shrine. Tell us what your shrine looks like and what all is around we would be happy to help you figure out what she wants done. Perhaps even bypass some of her other games.”
With the last part, many of the other men laughed and nodded their heads. One from behind me said, “With you being the only active shaman right now, I would guess that they will fight over you a little. Rare is the shaman who can serve both happily.”
The eldest smiled and pointed to a rock next to him to sit on. So I sat down and took the cup of tea he gave me. It was nice to have people to talk with. I had never noticed that I lacked people I could trust back on earth. I could speak with coworkers but genuinely opening up and trusting a group was a tricky thing. I never had problems trusting one person, but it was the group that caused the issues for me.
We talked back and forth for what seemed like a few hours. I explained out the landing and how I had a dungeon securing the tunnel. That seemed to be part of the problem I was facing. While I wasn’t being given proper quests, and so I didn’t know which goddess was telling me what to do, the guess was that I did an excellent job for Order. So Chaos wanted me to do something equally as great for her.
They also told me that I needed to keep an eye out for the future. The sisters would sooner or later want others to come to visit, and so they would end up asking me to build a path. It was a common task that the caves would be given in the past. Those who wanted to come would need to be able to.
So as I obscured the location, I also needed to think about how I would build dwellings for those who wanted to come. Not just while they were at the shrine but on the way to the shrine. There was a chance that there were no others who worshiped the Sisters, but that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be.
After all the ideas were given and talked through, they sent me on my way.
When I exited the remembrance, my throat was raw. I headed down to see Dave. As soon as he saw me, he slid me a glass of water. “You were up there for three days. I was starting to get worried.”
I drained the glass and pointed for another one, “yeah, we had a lot to talk about and with the way that time works here I could see it being several days.”
“So do you have a plan?”
I smiled and nodded my head. “Yeah I have a plan that I am hoping will make Chaos happy and get me to travel. I am going to be in here for a long time. Can you just create for me everything I need so that I can work and take it out?”
Dave grinned, “Even for the dungeon master there is a price for everything except hospitality.”
“Well I guess best rest up for a day and then go get the things I need to work.”

System Change
Years ago, Earth was indoctrinated into the "System." Earth was not the only place with the System, however. With the System came the other races, Invaders. The Invaders had one goal, to obtain ownership of this new habitable planet. This created a bloodbath, and for years the war raged. This didn't really have much to do with Derek. Derek was kind of a loner. Yeah, he enjoyed the occasional chat or drink with others, but he never stayed in one place too long or really got to know anybody new. Derek did happen to be rather strong. After the years of fighting monster and Invaders alone, he had become quite adept at surviving. One thing that helped keep him alive was his refusal to get involved with others. He rarely cooperated with teams. One day, Derek broke his rules and decided to lend some help, as the mission didn't seem too hard. He should have stuck to being alone. Hey everyone, this is my fiction, "System Change." It's the first time I've really tried to write a serial. All feedback is really appreciated. I plan to release chapters every Tuesday and Thursday. With occasional extra chapters being released. I will try to maintain a word count between 1500-2500 words per chapter. Thank you! I just made a Discord if anyone wants to join.
