After thinking it over for a moment, the whole idea of some kind of misunderstanding causing an incident sounded like just the sort of thing a lazy writer would set up for some kind of dramatic confrontation.

And easy enough to avoid with just a call to the woman in charge. “Hi John. Any problems?”

“Hoping to make sure they're won’t be any Adora.” she gave me a concerned “Hm?”

“My granddaughter made the point that she spent her whole life around witches and ninjas...” Sara gave me a glare. “...sorry, witches and magic warriors without any clue that werewolves and vampires were real, and she thought I should make sure you knew what I meant about someone getting launched into the river.”

I could hear the sound of a door closing on the other of the line. “Yes, I was a little curious about that. Please explain.”

Oof. She sounded a little...serious. I would say not mad, but serious. But women can be strange about being mad about something but not letting you know how upset they are. Like they somehow missed a entire gender being uninsightful.

“The eldest is stronger then me, but has trained all her life that earn that strength, and, has it under control. But her sister is getting magic that lets her effect the world around her and it’s all coming to her without a chance to have been trained to use it since I guess they assumed that with her father, mother and elder sister all being inner magic people, she would be too.”

She asked for “A moment...” while she thought that over. I liked that she had that habit.

“All right, is she a danger?”

...so how to put this? “She almost hit herself in the face with a package of Oreo’s yesterday trying to magic them down from a tall shelf. So I would say she’s more of a danger to herself then anyone else, but then again she pushed a entire door frame out of a wall and threw it, and me, about fifteen feet to the other my patio.

“But in her defense I had deliberately tried to scare her, so that was on me. Really it’s just a case of her getting really riled up or scared that her having magic would become a issue, and I’ll already asked her older sister to keep an eye on her.”

“That...sound like what I would expect from your granddaughter.”

What now? “Adora...am I strong for a werewolf or something?”

Sara, who had had been hovering close to listen in, and nearly chasing me around as I kept trying to move away from her, perked up at that.

“Oh yes. Very strong. You are doing thing I’ve only learned to do with age and you’re only been a werewolf for a week. You are so strong I thought you were a born wolf and just trying to play some sort of game by claiming to be new.”

“I had no idea what I might be up against with you moving suddenly into our territory, buying up a mansion, and all at the same time we began finding silver plated traps. One right on the edge of your property.”

“I was really convinced you were a old wolf making some kind of power play, at least until I did my background check on you.”

…Oh. “So we were both freaking out about each other. I think we may have a habit of overthinking things.”

She laughed. “Yes, I've made three phone calls so people would know where I was going today. Just in case.”

Damn. Why haven't I been doing the same. Oh yeah, I got no supernatural allies to back me up, just family and some friends that would have no idea what they would be up against.

“I’m glad you have people. But no fiendish plots tonight, just a meal and pumping you for information.”

She laughed again. “Of course, I would say you can pump me all you want, but we’ve only had lunch, so far.”

I laughed. My thirteen year old granddaughter looked horrified. I waved her off.

“So now we’re all out in the open about each other's dangerous children. Are you and the rest of the...colony? Pack? In the know about people with magic?”

“We just go by “the community”, here at least. Sometimes we use the word for those who can change, and other times for everyone here who knows about us.”

Her tone turned serious. “And I knew of people who could do magic, Maggissa, from my grandfather’s stories and friend of his that would visit now and then. But there were once those that would hunt their kind and mine, and maybe still do.”

“But since I came to this country, I have never meet any of them. For the people here, they are just stories.”

Sara had gotten bored listening to old people talk, and flirt. So she had began pounding in more stakes, which apparently could be heard over the phone.

“From the sound of it, I’m keeping you from your preparations. I will let the others know not to scare any little girls and we will talk later.”

“Sounds good. Bye now.” She gave her own good bye and hung up.

I was in a bit of a daze. It had been a while since I had met someone new, and she seemed to have an interest in me. Of course it might be the whole rich, unusually powerful werewolf, who was good with kids thing I had going on.

But at least this was something that I didn’t have to worry about being magically set up by my Ex as part of a plan to have me in a position to protect her grandchildren…

Because having the local sheriff who is also the leader of the local community of werewolves be interested in me as an incentive to help protect the kids would be beyond the reach of a spell…

…sometimes I really hate my brain.
