《Refining the Heavens》Chapter 21: Duel with Calculus

No matter how much he thinks about it, Calculus cannot understand why his Huang grade weapon is unable to break Kairos' Swallow. That old rod with chipped curve blades at each end is made from the poorest materials. Copper and wood.

The Swallow is a beautiful weapon, similar to a double bladed sword but with a long handle like a staff, and the blades resemble a Swallow's stretched out wings in flight.
It can strike fiercely with greater power than normal blades because of its reach, and its long handle allows the user swing it with one hand for speed or two hands for power.
Holding his weapon lightly, Kairos clashed with Calculus with all his might all the while careful not to break his weapon against Calculus' sword edge.
The Northern star formation worked beautifully as their Ki channelled like gleaming light towards Kairos. At this moment, if they are seen from the sky, it will look as though a shining blade had been drawn.
As an attacking formation, Kairos being the strongest of their group stood at the very front facing off the enemy. The position he is standing is the energy release point of the Northern star formation, and in this place, he is rapidly taking in Ki from his friends and unleashing that power in bursts. Because of the great amount, even holding the energy for more than a few moments will be unbearable.
The two clashed with neither side superior, and the battle dragged on, causing Calculus’ eyes to widen with surprise. It is hard to believe that a small group of F and G rankers had managed to fight a D ranker to a standstill because of a formation. It is anyone’s guess, the expressions the instructors had, staring at this scene in their staff office.
Slowly and steadily, Kairos' strikes become faster and fiercer stroke after stroke as he becomes familiar with the increased power coursing through him.
But, at the same time, the group's overall energy quickly dropped because of how much Kairos is expanding in the battle, and after just a short while they find themselves no longer able to keep up with how much power he is using. His group mates started to trembling from the strain and starting with one, more and more of them fell out from the Northern Star Formation, exhausted. In a few moments, only the four team captains and Kairos’ friends with superior cultivation than the rest are left in the array, supplying him with energy. Yet, the clash between Kairos and Calculus only grew more savagely.
Kairos’ body naturally seeking for a larger source to replace the energy he is using, and all around him, the grass, the sand and the air quivered; stirring in response to his will.
There is a convenient source of power around that anyone could draw from, the lifeblood of the world itself, Heavenly Energies. It is present in the form of sixteen unique attributes that exist everywhere in the realm.
They are the five elements of creation: nature, fire, earth, water and metal (金木水火土). The three natural elements: Wind, Lightning and Ice (風雷雪). And, four pairs of transcendent Elements: Space-Time (時空), Light & Darkness (光暗), Divine & Demonic (正邪), Attributeless & Void (虛無).
Having once connected with the stars the earth and the sea, Kairos has gained the ability to hear their whispers. Though right now, he is still at a mediocre stage, he already can sense their immense existence, their ancient oldness and the inhuman strength of their will.

And, although Kairos is not aware of it yet, he already able to sense the different Elements in the Heavenly Energies, even when the existence of these types of energy is usually too subtle to be discovered.
What practitioners usually cultivate is, in fact, an amalgamation of different elements in the area; A mixture of unrefined elements. The portions of each attribute vary depending on the terrain. For example, if one cultivates next to the ocean, he will gain an abundance of water elements, and likewise, in the desert, there would be plenty of wind and fire elements.
Unknowingly, Kairos tapped into the sixteen difference sources of Heavenly Energies. But, unlike his usual cultivation method, the attributes that flowed into him are distinct, pure and concentrated, each just a strand of energy that responded yet enough to cause Kairos' internal energy to be flooded violently.
AaaaaaAAAHHHHHHHHHH~!!!!!
Feeling the startling amount of power within him threatening to burst forth, Kairos let loose an unearthly roar.
He had no idea what he had just drawn into himself, but he is now in enough pain to be well aware that the power in his body has become overloaded and extremely unstable, so much so that even speaking is impossible.
But right now, he has no time to be afraid.
The tremendous energy burst outwards and started swirling around him, becoming tiny sparks of lightning that repeatedly flashed violently.
Calculus' face paled before the powerful explosion of unknown energy surged from Kairos. As if attempting to devour him, the aura from Kairos formed several maws suddenly attacks, attempting to strip away at Calculus' Ki barrier.
Everyone behind Kairos stares at him in astonishment. They could not understand just what kind of horrifying power is this?
Even the experienced instructors watching, failed to recognise what happened to Kairos.
Then, like an arrow released from a bow, he darted out from the Northern Star formation attacking Calculus without reserve.
In response, Calculus quickly threw up a Ki shield. The power escaping from his foe made the young noble wary about directly meeting with Kairos' blade.
He watched with grim disbelief as his Ki shield shattered with a simple strike. The Ki Barrier (鋼氣) that was a powerful concentration of Ki used by a D ranker for protection was destroyed easily like a thin veil of smoke. The projection of one’s Ki is supposed to be an insurmountable advantage of those above D rank over the rest. Yet, it was easily broken apart before Kairos’ strength that is like a tyrant’s wrath.
However, the shield delayed Kairos’ advancement long enough for Calculus to create a short distance between them. At the same time, he retaliated launching many piercing-type Ki attacks towards Kairos with his sword. The potency of projecting one’s attacks depends on the user’s skill, the amount of Ki infused, and its purity, but even at Entry D rank, the first rank that can project Ki, it is dangerously powerful for non-users.
Kairos slashed at the air thrusts with his Swallow, twirling and spinning his weapon to defend himself as he tried to close the distance.
But the attacks were far too quick for him, who never learned any martial technique for his weapon. He soon reached his limit at handling the amount of attacks, and finally, his defences were overwhelmed by a Ki attack that pierced through his side. The wound caused him to snarl from the searing pain as blood spilt out unimpededly, but nearly immediately, Kairos decisively shut off his sense of touch. A technique he learned when discovering Soul Force.

Thanks to the inhuman control of over his own body, instead of succumbing to his paralysing pain, Kairos sped up in his advancement, shrugging off what should be a crippling injury.
Calculus never expected Kairos to attack this savagely. The Swallow smashed heavily into his guard with a skyward slash, and Kairos’ newfound strength easily lifted the arrogant noble off his feet and sent him flying backwards.
The fearsome blow caused Calculus to be hurled back into his slave guards, and it took all four of them to catch him.
A protective jade within the young noble’s robes glowed hotly, dissipating the impact. He frowned, knowing that he was just protected from being gravely wounded. His face turned pale and grim.
Driven back by an F ranker with lousy equipment and not using any of the strange arrays that were previously deployed, in his heart, he is forced to acknowledge that Kairos, in this current beserked state, is a much stronger fighter than him. But in his mind, he is still unable to admit his loss.
Of the Devilheart family's martial arts, therein lies a forbidden art called the "Seal Reversal Technique”. It is a move that acts in the opposite manner of seals, instead of suppressing up one's power, this move unleashes power from one's body without regard for one's well-being.
Unlike the drug induced state of the Berserker's Pill, the technique does not injure the body's meridian channels from the powerful effects of the drug, and instead, it draws out power from elsewhere. Although the Devilheart family do not know where this energy is taken from, they found out users of this technique aged quickly and died ahead of their time, and so the family had forbidden the technique ever since.
It is an ancient art that after many years passing, the Devilheart family had forgotten its existence and left the old dusty martial arts tome in a dark corner of their library, which unfortunately landed in the hands of Calculus.
Activating this technique, the muscles on Calculus' arms and legs bulged as his veins pop up all across his body.
The sword he is holding trembled from the strength of the Ki that suddenly poured out from him.
Opposite him stood Kairos calmly observing the scene as he tried to staunch the bleeding from his side. After attacking Calculus so many times, the violent energies within Kairos has subsided a little, and he finally managed to stabilise it.
Kairos looked at Calculus expressionlessly, not showing the astonishment in his heart as he saw clearly how Calculus' life force was drained rapidly in exchange for power that does not belong. It is as if Calculus is squeezing out all the juice from a fruit that not only the power of his life force was squeezed out, but his lifespan has been shortened by this violent technique. No wonder this is a forbidden skill.
Both fighters channelled all their power into their weapon, preparing for their next clash. They both could feel that this will be their final attack.
Though the amount of energy within Kairos is fearsome, he is unable to draw any more energy by choice, because even if he could, another silver of power from the sixteen energies will cause his body to explode.
At the same time, Calculus' energy is rapidly increasing as he expands more and more of his life force. If he does not defeat Calculus with his next strike, Calculus will be able to gather enough energy to defeat him.
With blinding speed, the two clashed once more. The shockwave of their strikes lifted the dust in a circle around them and then blasted off into the surrounding.
The small pebbles from the dust flew violently away from the two and into the bystanders forcing both Kairos' team, and the further away Calculus' team to defend themselves.
Although they all manage to block the flying debris, the shockwave and noise that followed are exceedingly overbearing, sending all the bystanders reeling backwards.
With a single strike, their battle finally ended. As the dust subsided, the others could see the conclusion of their final clash. At one side, Kairos knelt on a knee as blood poured out from his mouth. His shattered Swallow was lying on the ground by his side as he held on to the ground to keep himself from falling. However, he did not move back a single step from where he stood.
In contrast, at a short distance away, Calculus stood upright and grave; Forced backwards by the might of the clash, he had left two deep tracks on the ground.
Then, blood started dripping from Calculus eyes and mouth; the damage he took from his own technique and from Kairos' attack was substantial, though for the moment he is in no great danger.
He took a step forward, intending to finish off that hated enemy of his, but stopped suddenly.
*Gah*
Calculus coughed out a mouthful of blood and kneeled down weakly.
"Take me away now!" he shouted urgently at his slave guards while trying to wipe the blood off his lips. The four rushed forward and helped Calculus up.
When they retreated, the nobles from Calculus' team also started leaving. Those that cannot move were carried away by the rest. Being nobles that are of a similar mind with Calculus, they couldn't help but fear Kairos' power yet at the same time they couldn't admit defeat against him. Therefore, they all chose to leave begrudgingly.
Those in the Red Team knows that in the near-future, Kairos' life at the academy will be continuously haunted by these nobles trying to take revenge, but for now no one has the spare energy to be concerned. Because, before they can rest at ease, a loud warcry erupted from nearby.
Forty minutes have passed since Kairos' teams first clashed with Calculus' teams. The nearby Orcs have long been lured over by the alluring sound of battle.
If not for Alucard's Dracula team struggling bitterly against those powerful creatures, everyone would have been swarmed by now.
A sudden pitiful scream could be heard along with the warcry, and immediately the faces of everyone from Kairos' side turned ghastly.
Someone is in battle with the Orcs, and they need aid at once.
"Let's go help," Kairos said, his body already tattered from the battle, but his eyes shone with light.
"You're in no condition! You can leave it to us!" Alan and the guys said, trying to persuade their leader.
"No, it's far too dangerous here, we need to stick together. Let's go together," Kairos shook his head stubbornly and said.

The Mystifying Diviner
Content warning, there is cursing in the story and there will be some pretty heavy sexual innuendos in it also. I don’t really plan to write gore, but there will be fight scenes. Fair warning to readers, it is a slow start. But hopefully it is enjoyable for you to read. Follow the story of an old chef who was lucky to be selected to become a system host. Well maybe not so lucky, because gaining the system killed him. He will be given a system that might not be the best match for him. While also having to deal with a snarky system monitor who might not be that helpful most of the time. He will also use his new found powers to enjoy life in a new younger body. What you can expect from this story is bad writing, poor grammar, and slow pacing maybe. Food, cooking, comedy, slice of life, fighting, exploring, tournaments, scamming and probably face slapping. I mean who doesn’t like a good face slapping? This is my take on a cultivation story, a lot of Eastern stuff will be crammed into with a mix of Western. This story started as a goal for myself to write 60,000 words in a month for NaNoWriMo. I was able to do it even with taking days off and not writing. I plan to keep writing the story, but at a slightly slower pace. I am aiming for 2-3 chapters a week now with about 4-7k words written. This is only posted on RoyalRoad currently, and I have no plans to change that for now. Cover art is by Jack0fheart [Participant in the 2021 Royal Road Writathon Challenge for the month of November 2021]
