《New Paris [a Modern-day LitRPG]》[Bonus Episode] - Job Interview in a New World

“Hi, my name is Laura Dubois de la Sablonnière, and it’s a pleasure to meet you.” I extended my hand to greet the woman before me.
Just like myself, the woman was dressed in a business attire, and, as unlikely as that sounded, she wore the exact same luxury brand I did. Of course, her two piece skirt and blouse were probably bought with her own money, whereas I was still using my father’s card to pay for mine.
“The pleasure is mine mademoiselle. I’ve heard good things about you from your bother. Would you please follow me to the interview room?”
I followed the lady to the adjacent room. She took a seat behind her desk, as I took a minute to admire the view from her window. The building I was in was located at the east side of the Puteaux district, and from the 63rd floor of this office, I could just about make out the grey silhouette of the Great Arc. We were as close to the edge of Pris Proper as the Defence Guild would allow people to get.
“Mademoiselle?” The interviewer called out.
“Yes, I’m sorry,” I quickly took a seat. “The view from your window is quite breath-taking.”
“Are you not afraid of working this close to the Wild Lands?” The woman, whose name plate read J. Everard, asked.
“Well, I would be lying if I said I didn’t have any reservations, but I do believe that my skills can be particularly useful in this context.”
“And are those skills similar to those of your brothers?”
“They are on a similar level…” I bit my lip, hoping that I would at least get the chance to tell Mrs. Everard about my work experience before she asked to see my status window.

“Well, if is that case, would you mind sharing your skills with me?” She asked.
Her voice was neutral, even somewhat innocent, which made me feel even worse. I tried to deflect the question.
“Maybe you would like to hear about my qualifications first? I have taken several online courses in data analysis. If you have a computer on hand, I could even show you-”
“Mademoiselle.” She cut me off. “I’m afraid I cannot make any exceptions in the interview process, even for someone with your name. Plus, and I would appreciate if this would stay between us, your father has sent me a letter asking to take good care of you. So, I need to make sure you will be safe within our company.”
“It’s just that I am a bit anxious to show my skills to strangers,” I said shyly.
I put a hand over my chest and tried to look as innocent as I could in hopes of convincing this woman to let the issue slide.
“Well in that case I will go first,” She smiled, trying to sound reassuring. “Share status window.”
A semi-translucent screen appeared before my eyes.

I held myself back from commenting that a career in business analytics had been a strange choice for someone with her lot of skills. ‘Supercharge’ was an extremely powerful electricity-based attack. I supposed she might have had low MP, which she had decided not to display, making it impossible for her to use attack skills.
“I apologise in advance, my external status window isn’t as neat.” I said, as an attempt to gain some more time to mentally prepare.

“No worries.” The woman reassured me, and I suddenly got the feeling that she might have had a low-level passive calming skill.
I couldn’t stall for much longer, so I braced myself for a rejection from this job, and said:
“Share Status Window.”
A semi-transparent screen appeared for both of us to see.

“As you can see,…” I started, but bit my lip and stopped. What was there to say?
“Mademoiselle,” the interviewer trailed of, clearly as much at a loss for words as me. “Would you mind elaborating on what some of these skills do? I don’t believe I have ever seen … most of them before. And your class, a courier? I do not mean to sound rude, but I thought most of your family were Dragon-Children …”
I clenched my fists and gathered all my courage.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that. Is there any way we could continue with the interview?”
The lady gave me an apologetic look.
“I am very sorry mademoiselle. But we have strict regulations here. All out employees, no matter their entry level, must have at least one combat skill. One active combat skill that is …” She trailed of again.
The worst part of it all was that she sounded genuinely sorry for me. It was not unlikely that I was the first high-ranker who had only passive skills that she’d ever met.
“I understand. In that case, thank you for your time.”
I got up and quickly left the room, before Mrs. Everard had had another chance to apologise for not being able to hire a daughter of the Dubois de la Sablonnière family. This was the third position I had been rejected from solely because of my skills.
The worst of it was the fact that I couldn’t even defend myself by coming up with some far-fetched reason why my skills were useful. The truth was that I had no idea what most of them did. Even worse, I was not Laura, the fifth child of Henry Dubois de la Sablonnière. Up until very recently, my name had been Sybil White, and I came from a world where all this skills and status nonsense did not exist.

Hiraeth: Promise of the World
On a rainy night, a young woman is transported to the enchanting world of Sol'h'meyr. Thrilled to be freed from the shackles of monetary survival and societal expectations on Earth, she embraces her newfound existence and magical powers bestowed. But the rose-tinted fantasy life she always dreamed of turns out to be a stark reality that poses to kill her if she doesn't adapt and let go of her past. Essairyn battles both cripping nostalgia and imminent danger in her journey from the Spirit and Demon Forest to the human realm of As'pyze. Disillusionment leading to anger has erupted into violence across the deceptively peaceful land. New friends and allies gather by her side, but tragedy and betrayal lurk closer than she realizes. Hiraeth is the idyllic beginning tainted with dark shadows in the epic fantasy series, Singularity Cycle. [ – Now Completed with upcoming minor revisions before second book – ] + complex character relationships and growth + realistic quirky magic system + unique mythical creatures + deeply developed world lore + evocative writing style + cute sassy fox sidekick - Original Book Cover Art by Chryiss Rewritten final version of formerly named Canaan series and first book, My World to Live. After a long wait and major changes, the first book in the series is retitled Hiraeth: Promise of the World. Thank you to all readers that joined me since I began posting this story two years ago. Minor Tags: Comedy, Horror, Artificial Intelligence, Cyberpunk, Dungeon, Dystopia, Loop, Steampunk, Virtual Reality, Villainous Lead. ] Additional Notes: The series, Singularity Cycle, is a passion project dating back to 2016. The original version of the first book was published on RR in 2019 and has since seen multiple revisions based on reader feedback with this one as the final and official fourth version before the second book. While the entire series story has undergone major changes in the last year, all books have been planned since the beginning of writing. It is also my second wish to eventually make this story into a webcomic, either by myself or with a team if possible. Thank you for taking this journey with me, and enjoy reading! ( You can alternatively read books in the series as standalone fictions, but they connect to one another though a running theme and mystery that evolves and progresses with the main character. ) Alternate Blurb for the Singularity Cycle series: Essairyn had never felt truly alive on Earth. It felt like something was missing ever since she was born, but even after nearly 20 years of mundane living, she could never pinpoint what this or the emptiness in her heart was. Suddenly, she awakens in a grandiose, primordial forest and encounters mythical creatures beyond her restless imagination in a parallel world called Sol'h'meyr. She befriends, in particular, a sassy fox-spirit named Akari who reincarnated after three millennia. Essairyn is gifted with abnormal magic, and Akari is being chased by those of her dark past. Together, they set out on an adventure in a world more dangerous than its beautiful facade could hide. Finding new friends along a path riddled with tragedy, Essairyn must learn who to trust as deceit and betrayal lie behind kindly faces. Life in this deceptively promising world slowly spirals down a path of no return. This is not a game, but cruel reality. Her simple adventure became the modest beginnings in a chain of disruptions that tore even the dimensional fabric of time and space. No one, not even Essairyn, was who she thought they were. And not even the fickle gods could change the time-worn destiny of the universes... A single promise shook eternity’s existence.

A Merchants Tale
Legends rise. Country’s fall. Empires wage war. But what supports these great powers, allowing them to function as a single organism. Is it the common man, Farmers and Millers forming the backbone of the land? The Soldiers and Guards keeping public order? The Wives and Widows supporting from the side-lines? The Nobles from their seats of power? Or the elusive Sorcerers who wield power untold? And what maggots crawl in this great creature, all trying to get a piece of its slowly decaying flesh. The gangs of the Underworld hidden in the shadows? The Bandits and Deserters hiding at the edges, ready to pounce on any weakness? Witches and Warlocks working their dark art? Or other Nations clawing at their neighbour’s, salivating over the riches they stand to gain from another’s demise. There is one group that belongs to neither group. They thrive on others misfortune and bring with them salvation and destruction in equal measure. They can raise a kingdom up or tear it down screaming and kicking. These are the merchants, the lifeblood of kingdoms, because what is the one thing above all else men crave. Is it Love? Power? Destruction? All these things can be acquired with one simple thing. Wealth. Wealth is the true power behind the world. Wealth can buy army’s, strangle kingdoms, and turn even the most devout man from his faith. Merchants come in many forms, shapes and sized, some gaudy, bleeding the people for all their worth, some tricky, preferring to make contracts and debts to trap men. And some desperate, doing all they can to sell even the most worthless of junk. This is a story of one merchant who goes against all a merchant stands for. He works not for profit but for some unseen goal, a prophesy aeons old. He comes and goes like a ghost, bringing with him hope and victory. All pray for his arrival to spare them from despair. But what about when he doesn’t show? What about the people he doesn’t save? For this man is no angel, no saint sent to save the masses. His goal was never to deliver hope. It merely isn’t time for their destruction yet. For nothing is eternal. And all things must end. But what comes after? Quick disclaimer in response to the review I got, this is my first story and somewhat of an experiment for me, hopefully my writing will get better the more I practice. Thanks for any helpful advice :)
