《Dungeon from the Void》B3 | Chapter 5 - Orbs

Leon
Why does that orb seem familiar to me?
Before I can think more on the subject, people immediately begin barraging the Collector with offers for orbs.
I begin pushing my way through the crowd in an attempt to see if the Collector has any lightning orbs.
An aura suddenly floods over the entire entrance hall, suppressing almost everyone within it.
"Calm down and form a line!" The Collector's voice resonates throughout the entire hall.
The crowd pauses for a moment before splitting up to form a line.
I somehow end up about halfway through the line, so I try to look past the people in front of me to see if the Collector has any lightning element orbs.
Lightning is not a very common element, so there aren't very many people who would be looking for them.
Despite that, it's generally pretty easy for a Collector to find a place with lightning World Energy. All they have to do is find a powerful storm.
"I would like to purchase this fire orb," I hear the person several people in front of me at the front of the line ask the Collector.
"25,000 WC," the Collector says without any room for negotiation.
I briefly search through my wallet and find a total of 65,438 WC within it.
Another benefit of being the City Lord of this Dungeon City.
"Thank you for your business," the Collector curtly says before looking at the next person in line.
Looks like it won't take very long to reach the front of the line.
As I wait to reach the front of the line, I try to look behind me in the line for the others.
Surprisingly, Pallus is only a few people behind me in the line.
Meanwhile Rose is at the back of the line.

I turn back to the front of the line and find that there are only two more people left ahead of me in the line.
This line is certainly moving a lot faster than I would have expected.
It's only taken me about an hour to almost reach the front of it.
"Do you have any darkness orbs?" The girl at the front of the line nervously asks.
The Collector shakes his head as he says, "I apologize, but I ran out of those in the last village I visited."
The girl hangs her head in disappointment before saying, "Oh, okay."
She then walks away in a sad manner.
I hope I don't turn out like her.
The person in front of me asks for a water orb and purchases one for 25,000 WC before leaving.
I step up to the Collector and ask, "Do you have any lightning orbs?"
The Collector doesn't say anything and just stares at me.
A few moments pass by before the Collector finally says, "You are the City Lord."
My eyebrows raise in surprise before I nod my head in confirmation.
"I see," the Collector says before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a orb with what appears to be sparks of electricity flowing through it.
"35,000 WC," he says while looking directly at me.
So, he does have one.
I pull out the World Coins and hand it over in exchange for the orb.
The moment the orb enters my hand, I begin to feel a surge of lightning element World Energy automatically flow into my hand and head towards my soul.
Now that is nice.
This orb is actually pretty high quality as well.
I nod my head in appreciation before turning to leave the line.

Unexpectedly though, the Collector calls out to me, "I would like to visit your office at a later date if you don't mind, City Lord."
I turn my head and call back, "Sure."
The Collector nods his head before focusing on the next person in line.
Well, that was odd.
I wonder what he wants to talk about?
The doors leading outside suddenly burst open as a young man runs in towards the receptionist desk.
"Please help me!" The man asks Alexa in a frightened rush.
Alexa barely even blinks an eye at his abrupt entrance as she says, "What is the problem?"
The man looks terrified as he says, "A thief just stole a special orb I was supposed to deliver somewhere!"
A special orb?
Could he mean... the orb that rich man bought?
People must really want that thing if it was stolen so quickly after it was bought.
I wonder who this guy was supposed to deliver it to?
Alexa calmly replies, "Then would you like to place a quest to capture this thief?"
The man hurriedly nods his head.
I head towards the back of the room to wait for the others.
Pallus joins me several minutes later.
"Did the Collector have an orb for you?" Pallus asks while holding an orb shining with a golden light.
I nod my head and pull the orb out of my pocket.
Pallus gives me a thumbs up and says, "Nice!"
"I can see that you got one as well," I comment before looking back at the line.
It's bizarre to see Damien casually standing in a line of other adventurers.
"Yep," Pallus says as he turns to look at the line as well.
An amused smile appears on his face as he notices Rose at the back of the line.
"Her luck never fails to amaze me," Pallus says.
I turn towards Pallus as I ask, "What do you mean?"
Pallus chuckles before saying, "Well, she was originally a lot further up in the line but somehow ended up at the back of the line after remembering that she had told those archery students to take a ten-minute break. She ended up rushing out of her place in the line to tell them about the Collector and to give them a longer break before rushing back to the line, only to find out that she lost her place in the line."
I snort in amusement before shaking my head.
"What's so amusing?" I hear Damien ask from behind us.
"Rose's luck," I say without turning around.
Damien snorts as well before saying, "Yeah, she has always had pretty crappy luck."
Pallus turns back and forth before saying, "Now that I think about it, where is Kat?"
Kat?
I look at the line and find her at the very front of it talking with the Collector.
"She is at the very front of the line," I answer Pallus.
"Really?" Pallus asks, "I wonder if the Collector has any shadow element orbs."
Kat appears to trade something with the Collector before nodding and leaving the line.
"By the looks of it, the Collector did have one," Damien comments as Kat begins walking towards us.
That Collector actually has a pretty good stock.

Paladin
When the first derelict alien spacecraft fell to Earth, humanity took what was found in it and propelled themselves to new heights. In their new Golden Age, humanity developed technology that they had only dreamed about. The following years saw hundreds more ships crash into the planet, spurring even greater technological leaps. An unassuming spacecraft, one of the dozens that fell yearly, descended on Siberia in 2021. The world took no particular notice of it. However, this one contained something beyond the miraculous technology that had made humans so prosperous. Three years later, in a top-secret underground facility in eastern Colorado, the automated construction of an army of Paladin Mobile Infantry Suits was underway. With this new, state-of-the-art weaponry, the military would turn the tide against the alien incursion that was consuming the planet. Humanity fell before that could happen. Sam was an engineer responsible for overseeing the facility. Now alone, he lives in utter boredom and near insanity, his only company the base’s pseudo AI and an army of empty Paladins. With the world gone to hell around him, and the things that caused it still living above, he decides that he is much better off staying exactly where he is. Unfortunately for him, that is no longer an option. This is the first novel I've written. The first fifteen or so chapters are going to be a little slower. I want there to be time to get to know the characters before they start blowing stuff up. Also, though the MC will be strong relative to the world, he won't be OP, and won't win every fight. Not every fight will be physical either. Currently, I'm aiming for something like 5 fairly short chapters a week, after the introduction part is done, but we'll see how that goes. Thanks for reading, and please let me know if I've made mistakes!

How to Raise Your Dungeon
A dungeon core awakens for the first time. It knows nothing, it has nothing, but it can hear something. Voices, whispering, talking, and sharing. For now, they are distant. But it believes, if it proves itself, they may provide it with wisdom and direction. And so its slow but steady growth begins. Polls will come when the dungeon specifically wants to choose between a number of options, and believes it will receive an answer. However, it will "hear" any comments made on the most recent chapter, and these will shape its behaviour. It trusts you implicitely. This story is an exercise in stretching my creative muscles, so with each decision made, the options and opportunities open to the dungeon will change- some closing off forever. The dungeon will face threats periodically, and its fate in these encounters will be heavily influenced by your advice, though it will of course do its absolute best even without advice. It hardly wants to die. Heavily inspired by There Is No Epic Loot Here, Only Puns, though my approach to the concept is somewhat different from that work.
