《Molting the Mortal Coil》Chapter 683 - Terrible

The group of Nascent Souls rushed back into the building they just vacated, and they felt the Shou Clan’s greatest defensive formation fluctuating above them. Even so, it was already too late to stop what happened to Lady Diyin. At that moment, none of them would have imagined someone would make an attempt on their lives. As Nascent Souls their Spirit Sense could cover quite a vast area, and everything that happened within thousands of yards was completely under their observation.
That flash of light was an attack moving extremely fast and also originating outside of their area of observation. The Shou Clan Ancestor had immediately activated the immense defense formation, but it was too slow to defend against the first wave of attacks. Since the attack was coming for her, the innate sense of danger she had as a cultivator gave her just enough time to mount a defense, but unfortunately for her there wasn’t just one attack. The Yincha Sect Leader, that gentleman, acted rapidly and blocked off some of those flashing lights, but he wasn’t fast enough to stop them all.
One of them passed right through her midsection and then out the other side without being slowed in the least. It punched a hole through the wall of the adjacent courtyard and then tunneled deep into the ground. The Yincha Sect Leader fed her healing pills, but he as well as Lady Diyin felt an immense law energy spreading from the already healed wound. Her flesh had already been repaired from the wound, but their healing pills did nothing to stop the poison spreading through her.
Lady Diyin was laid upon a bed and the other four Nascent Souls immediately started sending their own law energy into her. The Artful Life Alliance was founded to bring together all the various Sects, Clans and other groups that used sound related laws. Using their similar laws as a common ground they hoped to rise to the level of a first rate power by pooling their resources and strength. Sound laws have always been highly unusual in this world and quite difficult for others to deal with. At this moment this group of master’s demonstrated their prowess, overlapping various types of sound waves and targeting the law power ripping through Lady Diyin.

To attack a law inside another person’s body was highly dangerous. If they had been using something like a Fire Law, they would end up burning up the insides of her body trying to flush out the law rampaging through her. Surprisingly, the laws wielded by the Shou Clan Leader and Ancestor were exactly the same. They emitted an inaudible sound wave that made contact with the foreign law energy and then returned back to them. Their large ears twitched and then released another sound wave, this time causing the foreign law energy to tremble. At the same time, the Yincha Sect Leader’s hand started to vibrate and a high pitched sound entered Lady Diyin’s body. His law of piercing sound could completely ignore all forms of defense and strike the internal organs directly. He attacked the law energy directly along with the vibrating blade of law energy that the swordsman created.
While the two of them contained the law energy, the Shou Clan Leader and Ancestor continued to release their silent law power, and as time passed the foreign law energy started to vibrate in return. Then suddenly, that foreign energy began to vibrate violently and then shattered apart. The four of them all took a deep breath, relieved they could finally clear away that power.
Lady Diyin did not look as optimistic. She ignored all decorum and modesty at this point, pulling open the front of her robe to carefully expose her stomach. The three men looked away, but the Shou Clan Leader gasped loud enough that they suddenly turned back. Just there, upon her stomach was a brilliant green pattern of a rose. It was a bright green color, but as they watched it was rapidly changing to a darker shade. The Doctor had been helpless against the law energy earlier, but now she rushed forward to check Lady Diyin’s symptoms again. She still had a bright red stain on her lips from coughing blood earlier, but that didn’t stop her from doing her job to try and save the Lady.

“This poison is destroying the flesh everywhere the rose appears.”
As she spoke, the rose darkened from green to black and green vines expanded outwards, crawling up to Lady Diyin’s chest, down one of her thighs and over to either side of her abdomen. Four more green roses started to appear with a bright green shade like they’d seen earlier. The original rose was now black and the flesh that formed the pattern was already dead.
“Hurry, do something!”
The Yincha Sect Leader yelled at the Doctor, trying to get her back on task, but she was already working. While she had been explaining, she was forming handseals and her Qi sunk into Lady Diyin’s body. She spoke to the Lady as this happened, “Cooperate with me. We have to isolate these parts of your body with a Qi barrier or the poison will continue to spread.”
The new roses stopped darkening at this moment and the Yincha Leader was visibly relieved. Even if a Nascent Soul could easily survive the loss of their body, it was no small expenditure to get a new one. The methods of the Cultivation world were vast and varied, and there were many ways to grow new bodies, possess the bodies of others, or to be reborn anew. The problem was that the Yincha Sect had none of these methods, so not only would the price for a new body be steep, they'd also have to pay a premium to get others to help them out.
A few hours later four Nascent Souls were meeting in the Ancestral Hall once again.
Lady Diyin was not present as she was currently recovering in an isolated chamber. That poison had been far more insidious than they’d imagined and even after being quarantined with Qi the only way they had to remove it was through butchery. They had to slice a huge amount of Lady Diyin’s flesh away, chopping her clear to the bone in many places and even going so far as to remove some of her organs. The poison had sunk in very deep and it required some very expensive healing pills to regrow so much of her body. Even so, the rank 5 Emerald Rebirth Pill they used was still much cheaper than the cost of creating a whole body from scratch.
“That Lang Sheng is a bastard!”
The previously refined gentleman leader of the Yincha Sect seemed clearly upset now. His decorum had already faded because of his anger at what happened.
“Have you received the results of the investigation yet?”
The stoop backed old man ignored the Yincha Leaders outburst and asked the Shou Clan Leader calmly. The woman covered in piercings nodded, “I have. Those on guard reported the flashes of light originated from places in the forest far outside of the city. The defense formation was activated before they could even make a report. The attacks came from at least five different places at the same time, with perfect coordination as we all saw.”
“So, we don’t even know who did it?”
“It was Lang Sheng!” The leader of the Yincha Sect, suddenly realized that he’d gone out of control. He raised his hand, coughing into it and then taking a deep breath. He slowly bowed to the others, “Forgive me. My grand disciple’s injury drove me to madness.”
“It’s alright. I would be just as furious if my Little Miss was harmed.”

Shadows in the Dawn Mist
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - Winner November 2020 When a young woman is lured back to her homeland for the opportunity of a life time, she must face old fears. But never would she think that facing up to her past would change everything. Is History written by the victors, or by someone or something else...? *** I started writing this a few years ago and eventually fell out of love with it. I never finished it and my newer books are being written in different writing style, and genre with a more planned process. I decided to revisit it for the writathon and found that it wasn't as hopeless as I'd come to think. Hopefully, I've improved as a writer since them so the consistency may vary. Its been good to revisit and analyse my writing which I feel used to have some clunky and obvious dialogue which I'm trying to fix. This will always be my first novel and I hope, with a little exposure, I may come to like it again. Thanks for reading!

Daily life of a cultivation judge
Tired of those cultivators who think it is righteous to eliminate a sect or clan root and stem all in the name of revenge and avoiding future troubles, fights over treasures that end up destroying cities with no consequence whatsoever to the culprit, these psychos whose aim for the peak always involves a trail of carnage and bloodshed in its wake for some reason. Then look no further than the daily life of a cultivation judge. Yang Qing, is a young genius cultivator from a low-tier family whose only safe choice to get resources and hopefully lead an easy life led him to the courts of the Cultivation Order Society. Author’s disclaimer: Hey there this is my first novel so any criticism will be well taken though beware I’m a million-year-old monster who has cultivated the way of the sword to the peak. The daily life of a cultivation judge will be true to its name so it will be heavily on the slice of life lane with a bit of action here and there.Meaning we will see the life of Yang Qing when he clocks in and out. Hopefully, it will be one of those novels you read if you need to relax or are in a slacker mood like one of those otakus who listen to the noises of cicadas in the summer famously used in most animes. And it is in the slacker spirit that chapter release will be on Wednesday,Thursday and Friday. Sank yuuu Cover art by Conny Schneider on Unsplash
