《A New Kind of Freak (A dragon evolution story)》Chapter 43 - Rightful inheritor

It wasn’t just him who saw that small burst, the man holding it also took note and prepared to suppress the remnant power. Drawing in his aura, a bubble of mana encapsulated him and the stone brain. Even from outside the bubble, the force of a mountain on his back pushed him down, even the girl frowning a bit from the pain.

The suppression seemed to be working though, that little wisp of mana now pushed down to a point and slowly being destroyed. But then…

The man suddenly flew away, smashing into one of the standing giants but not coming close to stopping! The giant’s body collapsed as a gaping hole split it in two and the Sage in question continued off to the blue stone shell surrounding this place, and he appeared pinned in place as the dust finally settled.

The stone brain remained floating, within, that small spark of mana transformed into a blazing fire and only continued growing without end. It rose up above, forming two eyes on its front and a spine slowly dropping down. These body parts appeared as items of pure mana, glowing a bright blue while looking around the chamber.

Seconds passed as the brain soon formed the rest of its body, becoming a giant just as tall as the guards, but this time, actually alive!

“Supreme being, what is the matter with me taking these remnants?” The Sage cried out, not for a moment acting with anger towards the glowing figure of light. He did not have dreams of dying today.

“A human trying to take the remains of my race! Someone at your level should know the accord,” it spoke aloud in a garbled tongue, quite literally sounding like gibberish, yet a perfect translation appeared in his mind. He instantly recognised the effect, a unique feature of a particular great language.

Divinus! The language of gods to be bestowed on those lesser, just by listening, all those with intelligence understood every word.

It is a blessing of all those divine in nature, a gift from the universe as some put it.

“I apologise for not clarifying. To my knowledge all of your race died many years ago, I have been searching for their last divine relic and happened upon this place.”

“All dead! The audacity of you!” An aura blew up on the mountain, making the man’s nothing more than a childish anger. Every single living being collapsed, falling unconscious without control and shaking the entire Evelard range from the being’s rage alone. “Why then, does this child hold my people’s blood?” It pointed away from the Sage.

Right to him…

This couldn’t continue, who knew if the man would resent him for obtaining this being’s remnants, or what if his body somehow assimilated a crazily powerful bloodline and just died! He intervened in a desperate manner, “Lord of the Kandir giants, I mean no offence, but I’m not truly of your race. Just a humbled dragon.”

“Then explain why I sense their blood with yours.” An overbearing weight descended onto him, a pair of eyes glanced through his very existence and pried out any information possible. “A strange body, but you absolutely have the blood of a Warborne… Even part of a Spiritcaller. An exceptionally small trace of an Elder guard as well, even I am surprised you found hearts to digest.”

However, the Sage had heard enough, he knew without a doubt this dragon was the closest thing to the demigod’s race. “Supreme being, I understand my fault… The remnants will naturally belong to the blood of the Kandir. As is the accord.”

Without even a chance to completely understand those words, the demigod spoke once more, “As it should be. Remember your place, mortal. Young dragon, come forth to take this inheritance.”

As much as he wanted to reject it… Actually, could he reject it?

Walking up a bit, he looked up and asked, “Is it possible for me to not take this?” While growth lowered his voice a bit, he still sounded like a child, which he admittedly still was. However, no one dared to mock the question.

“Why would you do that? It is beneficial in every way.” As a demigod, it remembered the process of acquiring its power from long ago, and learnt of the sheer depth it contained. For a dragon, how could such power not be of immense desire?

On the spot now, he had to make up a reason which explained everything but also didn’t sound utterly idiotic. Fortunately, a clear one already appeared in his mind. “I’d prefer to reach the limits of my power without the use of divine power, especially from another race… Also, I’m worried those humans may kill me to acquire it in the future.”

“They will not, there are rules set with the gods. Anyway…” its voice cut off as a finger pointed to him and hundreds of shimmering runes already began moving into him. It was too late to stop. “The power of gods is not something your body can handle, it will awaken once your body, mind, and soul reach the master tier.” He knew that might be the case for everyone else, but there was no way to ensure such a thing himself.

He relaxed when seeing it wasn’t an assimilation, no longer worried about it killing him on completion. With that in mind he nodded to the demigod and remained quiet for now, wishing he knew more about those rules.

“Supreme being, before your consciousness disperses, I wish to know how your race fell. No proper records remain, and this history should be recorded.” The Sage shouted out unexpectedly, but he roughly understood their request. As for whether or not the demigod agreed, they waited and listened.

“Our race struggles to survive outside powerful mountain ranges, so, upon gaining power, sent out settlers to capture land for other forces to eventually build on… This range proved too strong though. After receiving a critical wound, my dear guards sealed themselves alongside me until I recovered, waiting until our home sent reinforcements.” The story ended there, it was enough to extrapolate what happened after.

As for why no one came, or what happened at their home for those to fall, it was impossible for this lone demigod to know. He could only look at the battlefield above and the endless corpses of his brethren. Even those trusted by their god could not survive, their divinity compressed into a single bone and then sealed with the bodies of Elder guards.

This place was a mistake to enter, but as his mind and power faded, things would now return to normal. The space of this battlefield slowly would return to its normal size, and mana all around was no longer suppressed by a divine relic.

Hopefully, his half-legitimate successor could survive the future of this place.

The demigod’s body of mana collapsed now, only the stone brain floating in mid-air, but as its last remaining runes flew out…

It fell to the ground, cracking on impact before fragmenting into fine dust. The Sage, previously pinned without means of escaping, dropped down and walked over to his niece, checking her condition repeatedly while she said, “I’m fine. I’m fine Uncle! He didn’t hurt me!” Like throwing a tantrum, she stomped her foot a few times as he fixed her hair and peered through her body for any damage.

But like she said, the demigod did not harm either of them, his aura pushed down on them a bit… Or a lot in the hatchling’s case. Finally, it was concluded that nothing truly happened to Raccelline and the pair looked at him strangely.

“I never expected… There’s no need to be emotional,” he spoke aloud briefly. Then turned to the dragon and told him mentally, “ I’ll take you back up and leave.” No one really had a chance to interact, with a spell used to rapidly fly them all back up to the surface.

It wasn’t exactly a long journey back up, but some way up Raccelline tugged on her uncle’s jacket to whisper something in his ear. In the process he looked to the dragon repeatedly and seemed to be debating something internally.

Finally, a message came through the mental link, “Per Raccelline’s argument, it is entirely thanks to you that I obtained the divine relic. So, a reward is in question, what can I provide you with?”

It was in an entirely different direction than expected, but he didn’t even need to think hard for an answer.

Actually… Well… It occurred to him that there were actually several desirable items. The least of which was more life essence, while he very much craved some sort of magical weapon!

But what about something to easily teleport him home when he faces danger? Or one of those dimensional storages!

On second thought, such storages are easy to acquire even for Greater wizards, it was a waste to ask for a powerful one. Also, couldn’t he ask where in the eight worlds he was for once?

“Before I pick, can I ask which power you’re from? And where we are at the moment?” He felt a bit strange asking such a question, but the man clearly didn’t seem to mind. Perhaps it amused him a bit, but most dragons didn’t know where they were placed at birth unless they were lucky.

“This is the Evelard range, inside the Remelo kingdom. As for us, we belong to the Ancient empire of man, the second strongest in the 3rd world. This is our continent.” While a load of names, it quickly clarified so many matters internally, this world wasn’t actually too bad to live on as well.

He came to a decision as well, but before that, the air around them burst with the sound of a million sonic booms. Mana suddenly exploded, his senses no longer capable of telling anything apart…

And deep below a rumbling occurred, something completely unlike the suppression of a Sage or demigod.
