《The Faceless Minion》Chapter 8 - All that Sparkles

Two teens sat on a couch, controllers in hand and eyes glued to the screen ahead. One, a dark-skinned boy with short black hair. The other, a fair skinned girl with straight, black hair and narrow brown eyes. They both wore domino masks over their faces, black with a purple tint for the boy, blue for the girl.
“Bro! I am NOT letting you beat me this time!”
“Calm down, it’s just a game.”
The boy smirked.
“Then I guess you don’t care if I drop this little blue shell, do you?”
The girl’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re dead.”
“Calm down, it’s just a game.”
“...”
“Um, that was, I mean…it’s just a game right? All fun and games? Right, Chronolock?”
“Rematch.”
“Um, I think we should probably get ready. Might have a mission you know?”
“Rematch. Now.”
“Pink, a little help?”
“You brought this on yourself, Void.”
Pink let out a sigh. She leaned on her elbows over the table, absently twirling a lock of her hair. Where could he be?
The doors slid open. Pink jumped a little and turned to the door. Her face broke into a wide smile.
“Wonder Knight, there you are! I, I mean, we’ve been waiting ages for you!”
“Sorry everyone, had to meet with the boss. Suit up, looks like we’ve got a mission.”
“Nice timing, bro!”
Wonder Knight raised an eyebrow. Void? Excited for a mission?
Void froze as a hand gripped his shoulder.
“This isn’t over. We’re continuing the moment we get back.”
Void began to sweat. Wonder Knight turned to Pink Star, who shrugged.
“Don’t ask.”
“Bro, you sure a villain’s here?”
“Boss got a tip they’d be coming in tonight.”
The four teens were leaning over the edge of a roof, binoculars in hand. The sun had already set, and the moon reflected off the ocean beyond the piers. The team had their eyes fixed on a warehouse in the port. A warehouse that was supposed to be empty.
Void shrugged.
“Tips ain’t always right, right?”
“Shut up and keep looking.”
Void gulped down whatever he was going to say next. Wonder Knight shook his head.
“You just had to make her angry before the mission.”
“Come on, bro! I said I was sorry, didn’t I? Besides it’s a perfectly valid…Gah!”
An elbow to the rib was his answer.
“Guys! I think I see someone.”
Pink Star pointed to the side of the warehouse. A group of dark figures, carrying boxes. Wonder Knight frowned.
“Suspicious, but we can’t go in unless there’s a super. Let’s get closer and take a look.”
The four teens crept to the wall of the warehouse. Voidspeaker began swirling his hands, creating a small black blanket under the window. Wonder Knight silently nodded to Pink Star, who ducked under the blanket and brought her hands close together.
“I choose you, Owl.” She whispered.
A little pink Owl appeared with a small flash of light underneath the blanket. Pink Star lifted her hands and let the Owl fly into the warehouse while Voidspeaker dropped his incantation. Pink Star then focused on her visor, where small lights and sparks glittered on the exterior.

“What do you see?”
“Bunch of guys in armor and masks, moving boxes around.”
“Any supers?”
“Hmmm…the guy in the middle is dressed kind of weird and isn’t helping with the boxes, but I’m not sure…wait hold on.”
“What is it?”
“One of the guys dropped their box. Weirdo is yelling at him, whoa he’s wearing some kind of suit with metal wings or something…eek! He just shot some light or something at one of the guys.”
Chronolock’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s a super, let’s go.”
Chronolock grabbed the edge of the window and hoisted herself inside. Wonder Knight hissed at her.
“Chronolock! Chrono! Wait! We don’t have plan…dang it she’s gone. Void, follow her and get her back!”
“I got it.”
Wonder Knight sighed as Voidspeaker climbed into the window. He turned to Pink Star.
“Keep an eye out, I’ll try to think of something.”
Inside Voidspeaker was quietly floating an inch off the ground, ducking behind boxes and into shadowy corners. He cursed and dropped to the ground as one of the men passed by him, then rolled into the shadow of a stack of boxes. He crawled forward until he caught up with Chronolock, peeking out from another stack.
“Chrono! Wait!”
“Took you long enough, let’s finish this and go.”
“Look I’m sorry! We’ll rematch however long after. But we need to get back to the others!”
And the world went white.
Voidspeaker groaned and pushed off the ground with his elbow. The white in his vision and the ringing in his ears slowly began to fade. He looked to the side. Chronolock was lying on her back, also groaning, surrounded by scattered boxes. He shook his head and looked forward.
“Well, well, well, what do we have here?”
Before him stood the weirdo. He wore a gas mask over his face, but with the visor of a night vision headset. He had a fur-lined flight jacket on, and leather pants. On his back was some sort of metal backpack. The kicker though were his arms, hanging from his arms were polished metal feathers that shimmered in the light as he moved about. He was flanked by a score of armored minions.
Well, crap.
“Looks like we got a couple of wannabe heroes, boys. Let’s teach them a lesson!”
Voidspeaker grit his teeth and brought his leg up, rising to a kneeling stance. He brought his hands up and began to chant.
Flash!
He fell onto his back as his vision went white again.
“They don’t call me the Dazzling Vulture for nothing, you punk. You never should have come here!”
Voidspeaker grimaced. As the effects of the flash faded once more, he found himself surrounded by armored, masked men. Chronolock was just coming to and shaking her head.
Then the wall exploded.
Voidspeaker ducked his head as pieces of debris went flying. He saw a flash of pink. A mighty, glowing rhinoceros broke through the encirclement, sending masked men flying or scattering out of the way. Wonder Knight leapt from its back and held out his hand. Voidspeaker grabbed onto it, and Wonder Knight pulled him to his feet.

“Thanks bro, I owe you one.”
Wonder Knight nodded, then both ducked their heads. There was another flash of light but the glowing rhino leapt in front of them, dulling the blast. Wonder Knight turned to the side and launched a man with a front kick. The man soared through the air, and then smashed a crate with a crash.
“I’ll handle these guys! Pink will keep the weirdo distracted, go get Chrono! After that, you two figure out how to bring that guy down!”
Voidspeaker nodded as Wonder Knight turned to catch a fist and walloped his attacker. He turned and ran towards where Chrono was lying on the ground, breathing heavily and clutching her head.
“Hey! Get up!”
She turned her head up.
“V-Void? I’m sorry, t-this is all…”
He grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet.
“Move now, apologize later.”
“Um, y-yeah.”
Voidspeaker pointed to where the Dazzling Vulture leapt into the air, a stream of light coming from his metal backpack as he soared out of range of the rhino.
“Head in the game, the other two are keeping them distracted. Wonder wants us to take down that jerk. You up for it?”
Chronolock shook her head a bit, then nodded once and narrowed her eyes.
“Let’s get that sucker.”
Voidspeaker nodded.
“I’ll draw him in, you disable him.”
Chronolock nodded, then ran behind a stack of crates. Voidspeaker turned back to the front. The Dazzling Vulture flapped his wings, stars of light floating off them before accelerating towards the rhino. The rhino roared as each impact caused it to flicker. Void closed his eyes, spread out his hands, and began to chant. He started to float in the air and his robes began to flutter about. Dark orbs grew around his hands and a purple glow surrounded his body. He opened his eyes, now glowing purple.
The rhino let out a final cry before dissipating into pink sparks. The Dazzling Vulture grinned before turning his attention to Wonder Knight, who currently had six men hanging onto him.
And then he quickly bent backwards as a black beam shot past his face.
Voidspeaker rose into the air, until he was face to face with the Dazzling Vulture. Dazzling Vulture sneered.
“You should’ve stayed down, kid. You can’t handle the Dazzling Vulture!”
Voidspeaker spoke, a deep rumble echoing his voice.
“And you can’t handle the void.”
Dazzling Vulture let out another flash of light, but Voidspeaker ignored it and shot another beam. Dazzling Vulture grimaced and dropped from the sky, then spread his wings out and swung around. He spread his wings and let another barrage of stars from Voidspeaker’s side. Voidspeaker swung his hands into circles, black disks absorbing the blows. He then dropped the disks to resume his attack.
And gasped.
Something slammed into him.
Voidspeaker let out a cry as he slammed into a towering pile of crates. The glow faded from his eyes and body, the orbs around his hands shrank and vanished. Before him flew the Dazzling Vulture, hands around his neck as he pushed him into the crates.
“Bad move to block your own vision, kid. That’s why amateurs like you shouldn’t get involved. You’ve no idea what you’re getting into.”
Voidspeaker’s mouth curled up, even as a drop of blood dripped from it.
“Right back at you.”
Chronolock jumped from the top of the crate pile. She flipped over the two and grabbed onto the Dazzling Vulture’s backpack. Dazzling Vulture let go of Voidspeaker and spun around, trying to reach the girl on his back. He then realized he was plummeting towards the ground and tried to direct his light into the device on his back.
And then he stopped.
And remained still.
His eyes widened.
His backpack was vibrating. No light was coming from it. Nor was it falling. And now he was dangling from it like a parachute caught in a tree.
And in front of him rose a boy in black robes and chanting ominously.
“Experience nothingness!”
His vision dimmed, and then went black.
The team gathered around the tied up men. Wonder Knight nodded his head, then walked over to the other three.
“Authorities and cleanup are on the way. Good work everyone.”
Chronolock kicked at the ground, eyes on her feet.
“Look…um…I’m sorry everyone. That was stupid of me.”
She gasped as Pink Star suddenly embraced her.
“I’m just glad you’re ok!”
Wonder Knight nodded.
“All’s well that ends well. Just, don’t do it again, yea?”
Chronolock nodded. Wonder Knight’s eyes narrowed and he began to grin.
“Besides, I think someone owes you a rematch.”
Chronolock’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s right.”
Voidspeaker backed up.
“Um, hey, bro, we should probably get some sleep, right? Big day and all.”
“We’ll rematch however long later.”
“Ugh, you remembered that.”
Wonder Knight put his hand on Voidspeaker’s shoulder.
“There’s energy drinks in the kitchen.”
“Not cool, bro!”
The team laughed. As the laughter died down, Pink Star tilted her head.
“But like, what were these guys doing here?”
Wonder Knight nodded and strode over to one the boxes the men had been carrying.
“Let’s find out.”
He opened the crate.
And blinked.
“Huh?”
Computer chips?
“Why would supers illegally move computer chips?”
Voidspeaker walked up to him, a piece of paper in hand.
“I don’t know, bro. But I think I know where we can find out.”
The paper was a shipping address.
“Hey team, anyone taking Spanish?”
