《Arranged Love (Currently Being Edited)》Chapter 14 - Paulo Fights with his Parents

King Ferdinand looked at Eva's sad face and then over at Paulo and noticed how he was looking out the window and ignoring her.
"Son!" he said loudly to snap him out of his trance.
Paulo jumped a little and said, "What?!" sitting up straight as he looked over at him.
"You're being rude," the King said loudly.
"Ugh, I'm really not in the mood for one of your lectures right now Dad," Paulo groaned, exhaling deeply and turning his head away, looking back out the window.
"You may not be in the mood, but you're going to hear it son because you're not being a very good husband right now. You have this sweet, beautiful, extremely intelligent woman beside you, that by the grace of God and fate agreed to be your wife, and you have done nothing but ignore her. I'm sorry to have to say it, but you don't deserve her."
"Ha!" Paulo scoffed, raising his voice. "Maybe you should've realized that before you made me marry her. She could have married someone that deserved her more. Someone that actually wanted her!" Paulo shouted as he turned his head and looked out the window, letting out a deep breath in frustration, sitting back in his seat with his arms crossed.
Even though she had already known it, hearing her husband say that he didn't want her, made her heart hurt and it felt like a slap in the face. She looked out the window on the other side of the car, crossing her arms and biting into her bottom lip, blinking back the tears that were burning in her eyes.
"What did you just say to me?" King Ferdinand shouted, with wide eyes. He obviously wasn't used to being talked to that way and this whole conversation looked like it was making the Queen feel uneasy.
"Oh give it a rest with the King act Dad. You think just because you're King it gives you the right to control everyone and everything around you!"
His Dad laughed smugly and nodded. "Yeah. Actually I do think that, because that's exactly what it does. I'm King and until you're the King, you'll do exactly what I say, when I say it."
Paulo glared at him. "Well I did, didn't I? You got your way like you always do huh? I did exactly what you wanted like your little puppet on a string. I married a princess. I fulfilled my royal duty and all that bullshit, so you wouldn't take the crown away from me. You'll get your male heirs and then you can just leave me alone and stop trying to control my fucking life!" he shouted.

Queen Victoria laughed and said, "Son, you do realize that male heirs don't come from a marriage certificate right? It does sort of help if your wife loves you."
"Love?!" Paulo scoffed. "That's rich. Here's a thought. Maybe you two should have thought of that before you forced me to marry someone that you picked instead of letting me marry who I wanted," Paulo told her, slouching down in the seat with his arms crossed, looking out the window. "And last I checked love wasn't required to make babies," he grumbled.
His Mom laughed again. "No, but it sure helps."
Paulo looked back at her and then over to his Dad and said, "That's all you two care about isn't it? You care more about getting heirs than you do about me and my happiness. Well don't worry. You'll get your fucking heirs," he said, turning and looking back out the window. Adding under his breath, "even if I have to be drunk off my ass to do it."
His parents hadn't heard his last words but Eva had and she felt insulted and hurt by them. He just said he would have to be drunk to sleep with her. Was he serious? Did he really find her that repulsive?
They rode the rest of the way to the airport in silence and Eva could feel the awkward tension in the car. She looked across the limo and noticed Rosalie with a smug smile on her face. Apparently she had really enjoyed their conversation.
As soon as the car stopped Paulo opened the door and was out of it, headed down the runway towards one of the two private jets that were waiting for them and Eva walked slowly, not in a rush to keep up with him. She saw his parents and sisters and Rosalie heading to the other jet that would take them to Spain and Paulo's Mom looked sad and his Dad looked angry. Eva boarded the private jet Paulo had gotten on and the stewardess directed her over to the seat next to him and she reluctantly took it and buckled up.
She looked over at him and his jaw was clenched making his chiseled jaw line stand out even more than normal. His hair was falling over his forehead and when he turned and looked over at her, his hazel eyes made her heart skip a beat, even though she was mad at him for what he said.

He crossed his arms and leaned against the window, letting out an exhale. Without even looking at her he said, "Just leave me alone okay? I'm not really in the mood to chat right now." Then he closed his eyes.
'Why does he have to be such a jerk?' she thought. 'And why did he say he'd have to be drunk to sleep with her, as if she was repulsive or something?'
She studied his handsome face and wondered if there was any chance that he could ever learn to love her or if she was doomed to be in a miserable, loveless marriage for the rest of her life.
He opened his eyes and looked over. "What? Why are you staring at me like that?" he grumbled, adjusting himself in his seat.
She looked away and her face flushed red with embarrassment from being caught staring at him.
"Sorry," she laughed awkwardly. "I was just ummmm, thinking about what you said to your Dad."
"Which part?"
"You know, about you needing to be drunk to sleep with me," she said quietly, looking down at her hands. "Am I really that repulsive?"
He let out a frustrated exhale like he really didn't feel like having this conversation right now. "No. I'm sorry if you took it that way. I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. It's not that at all. You're beautiful Eva and you're smart and you seem like a great person," he said, letting out a frustrated exhale as he leaned forward, running his hands through his hair.
She scrunched her eyebrows. "Then what is it? Am I not your type? Are you not attracted to me or something?"
Paulo exhaled and said, "No. It's not that I'm not attracted to you. A man would have to be blind to not be attracted to you. You're beautiful, but," he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and bowing his head. "The truth is."
He lifted his head and looked over at her. "I have feelings for someone else. My parents knew it and they still forced me into this marriage. That's why I've been so angry about it. They wouldn't let me marry her because she's not a princess."
Hearing that felt like a punch in the gut. "What kind of feelings?" she asked hesitantly, scared to hear the answer.
"I care a lot about her and we're really close. I could've seen myself falling in love with her one day."
Then Eva thought of something. She wondered if Rosalie was right and he wished he could have married her instead. She didn't even know what to say to that. It really hurt to find out her husband had feelings for someone else.
"Well I'm sorry you got stuck marrying me," she said sadly as tears stung at her eyes and she crossed her arms and laid her head back against the seat and closed her eyes.
She sat there trying to go to sleep but then a thought crossed her mind and she lifted her head.
"Did my parents know about this? About you having feelings for someone else?"
He turned his head to look at her, studying her eyes and hesitating for a minute before saying, "Yes. Both our parents did."
She suddenly felt like she had been betrayed. Her parents set her up to marry a man that they knew wanted someone else. She could believe her Dad would do that, but not her Mom.
"Wow," she said, shaking her head in disbelief. "I can't believe they would do that to me."
She looked over at him, seeing the sad look on his face.
"And I can't believe your parents would do that to you."
She slowly slid her hand over on top of his and softly said, "I'm sorry."
He gave her a pained smile and said, "Thank you."
She laid her head back against the seat and let out an exhale thinking, 'This is going to be the most miserable marriage that ever existed. My husband has feelings for someone else.'
