"hey guys!" yuna exclaimed as she joined sunghoon and jake at their lunch table
"someone's happy" sunghoon chuckled as yuna sat next to jake, clapping her hands together
"i am!" she smiled at the boys, "the track captain is transferring schools!"
"really??why?-wait" jake began, "the one you don't like??"
she nodded, "i don't know why she's leaving and i genuinely don't care" she spoke but then felt bad for saying that afterwards, "i try so hard to not hate anyone but i just couldn't bring myself to like her"
"so who's going to be the captain now?" jake asked
"youre looking at her!" she pointed at herself with a huge smile on her face and the two immediately widened their eyes before clapping for her
"congrats yuna!" sunghoon smiled, "you deserve that place"
"definitely. we're proud of you" jake patted her back, smiling as well, "i'll be sure to buy you something to congratulate you"
"you don't have to get me anything!" she shook her head waving her hands in front of her, "but... i'd like it if you guys came to my track event. it's in three weeks on wednesday at 3"
"i'd love too. i'll make sure to push back my ice skating practice" sunghoon nodded, picking up his food with his chopsticks
yuna nodded and turned her head to the left to jake, "can you make it?"
he bit his lip, "i-i'm not sure if i can make it"
"oh" yuna frowned and jake was about to comfort her and apologize but she just grinned instead, "it's okay. i'll have other times where you can come"
jake knew she was sad about him not coming since it was her first track event as captain and he really wanted to be there

"i'll try and get out of my tutoring and make sure i have no meetings afterwards so i can be there for you"
yuna smiled making jake let out a breath of relief that she wasn't mad at him, "thank you"
"you're such a child" sunghoon scoffed and yuna just glared at him
he cleared his throat suddenly intimidated of the girl and he quickly switched the topic, "so jake..anything interesting happening in your life?"
"hmm.." he thought about it before shaking his head, "not much. just been planning a few fundraisers and other activities for student council, few soccer practices and violin rehearsals but that's it"
"how about the afterschool tutoring?"
"boring. i don't really pay attention in those sessions since i already know most of the material" jake responded, "i don't even know why my mom put me in those sessions when she knows i do good without them"
"imagine being naturally smart" sunghoon spoke, "can't relate"
jake chuckled, leaning back in his chair, "you and yuyu are both smart"
yuna looked at him offended because she had no idea why he brought up her name, "hey don't bring me into this! also, who said i was stupid?" yuna scoffed
"you" jake pointed at her, "you literally say it everyday"
"well...you're not supposed to agree with me" yuna rolled her eyes and jake laughed in response causing the other two to laugh as well
♡
yuna waited at the entrance at the front of the school. it was raining and she didn't have an umbrella with her
her house wasn't far but she didn't want to walk, well run, in the rain and get her clothes wet along with risking getting sick
yuna was one of the last students to leave and she sighed as she saw students leave with their umbrellas

yuna quickly put the hood of hoodie on and just as she was about to take off, a hand gripped her wrist, keeping her in place. she looked back and saw jake standing there, "hey star"
he let go of her wrist and yuna looked at him, "hey jake. what are you doing here?"
he looked at the rain and then back at yuna, "i saw it was raining and well i wasn't going to let you walk alone in the rain"
jake took a few more steps and stepped outside, opening his umbrella and placing it above him
he looked at yuna and held out his hand with a smile on his face, "let's go" she grinned at him before walking towards him and holding onto his hand, going under the umbrella with him.
the two then began walking, "oh..but don't you have a meeting?"
"i told them i was busy" he replied, "i rather walk home with you then go to the meeting right now"
yuna could feel herself getting red and she quickly covered her ears with her hair, hiding the redness of them.
jake then noticed that she was partially not under the umbrella. the boy removed his hand from hers and wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer to him
she flinched from this contact and looked at him, "what are you doing?" she asked, flustered
"you're getting wet-" yuna widened her eyes at his statement and he quickly took it back, "i-i m-mean like the water is getting on your clothes. you know what i mean"
yuna just nodded and bit her lip to contain the smile that wanted to show on her face in that moment

Humanity's End
Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.
