Chapter 5, Working For Tips

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I should get a raise for the way I kept my composure with those, those five year olds at table seven.
The first day back was alright, there wasn't any drama that happened in any of the classes nor at lunch so I was pretty much chilling the whole time, luckily we had no work or homework to do so I really was just chilling the whole entire time I was there.
Although I couldn't chill after school, I had to pick up a last minute shift because my coworker Sheila was unable to go today, so I had to take a quick shower and then change into my uniform before hurrying out the door to catch the bus.
I've been working at Mickey's Diner since freshmen year, I needed the money because at the time there were cute shoes at foot locker and my parents weren't going to give me any money to buy them, so desperate times called for desperate measures which led to me working a job.
Not that in complaining, my bosses and coworkers are angels on earth, they understand everything and anything that I tell them and help me out through any dilemma that I ever had.
They're practically my second family, or first family because my current family treats me like I'm some stranger living in their house for free, so they weren't really on my mind whenever I got on the bus and got to my workplace.
Sometimes they treat me like their daughter but other times I just want to hit them with a sledgehammer, but I have to remember that I only have two more years until I'm able to go to college and live the life I want to live.
I never understood why some parents would want to stop their children from growing into the person that they wanna be, like if I ever have kids, I want them to remember that mom is always going to have their back and support them in whatever they want to become.
Seeing the smiles on your child's face is enough to send shivers down your spine, the way they can rant on and on about the things that they love is something that every good parent would love to see and hear.
Becoming your own person and living the life you planned is something I'll never be against, I got off the bus and walked to the diner with a smile playing on my lips.
Coming here and working was my happy place, I never had to wake up early to come here because they knew that I started school which meant I couldn't be here at certain times, but I always make it up during the weekend.
Opening the doors, the smell of coffee smacked my face as the door bell rung, I smiled as I greeted everyone while walking to the back to punch in, I felt happiest when I was here.
My boss smiled at me, she was a sweet little old lady who never once raised her voice to be heard or had to fight with someone for their obnoxious behavior, whether customer is right or wrong, respect has to be their before anything is said and done.
"Hey Kara, just in time. Thank you for filling in for Sheila on such a short notice, please tell me all about your first day back to school."
My boss, Harley, asked me as I grabbed my apron and put it on my body to protect my uniform from getting dirty, I walked to the sink and did the dishes as I began to explain every single thing that had happened during the day.
I didn't mind telling her everything that went down in my life because there wasn't much going on anyways, I just had school and work but that's all, no love life and she knew all of my friends already.
She was most intrigued by Kiana, she told me that Kiana reminded her of her niece that passed away two years ago, she was a hot headed biker that was born deaf and mute, she was always on edge but she was the best thing this town has ever seen, that's what Harley tells me at least.
I loved hearing stories from Harley's life, it gives me some what an insight on what goes on in her life, why she acts the way she does and why she's a sweet, harmless soul.
"Rowdy boys at table seven, I'm going on break, sorry Kara."
My coworker, Shirley told me as she walked to the back and sat down, lighting a cigarette before walking outside, I could kick her down the stairs if I was allowed to.
With a deep breath, I walked to the table and began taking orders from the boys, they were wildly disrespectful and I didn't want them back at the diner but this wasn't my choice, so I kept a smile on my face and wrote everything down.
I walked to the back and gave the chef the order before complaining to Harley, she nodded her head and we began to speak about what we were going to do, I didn't know what to do so she had to choose on her own.
Watching her walk to the table with their order as she began to explain to them something was so satisfying, but I couldn't bare to stand there anymore so I walked outside and got smacked with the cigarette smoke hitting my nostrils.
I should get a raise for the way I kept my composure with those, those five year olds at table seven.
I huffed as I looked around the outside part of the building, Shirley laughed at me before talking to me about her day and then asking me about mine.
Shirley was about ten years older than I was, with gorgeous thick curls and a skin tone darker than mine, I fell in love with her the first day I came but had to realize she was older than I knew.
The crush was cute short after that.
