《Silence ✓》Prologue

Zeal let out a deep, frustrated sigh. Her honey brown eyes darted here and there as she listened to the cop on the other end of the phone line. His tedious rant of her being carefree went in one ear and out the other. There was someone out there, watching her every move, and she was damn sure of it.

She could barely catch the last sentence that the cop had said before silence reigned; one that was utter and absolute. Zeal ran her thin, bony fingers through her lengthy brown hair, and sighed for the umpteenth time. The man was proving difficult, telling her she was just imagining things when she knew very well that she was not. How could she be wrongly accused of something she was well aware of? That was not right.

He hounded Zeal with questions, but she could pay no attention to what he was saying.

She flipped the shutters of the window and stared outside. It was cloudy and it looked like a storm was about to come. The sky was gray and gave the street a sad outlook. The wind fluttered the leaves and flowers wildly. Zeal could hear the roof making cringing noises. She clung to the telephone that was on her ear as she saw a silhouette in the darkness, all dressed in black.

He stood afar, unruffled by the wind as his eyes seemed to pierce through her. An eerie chill went up her spine, eliciting an involuntary gasp as she violently snapped the shutters close.

"I am telling you, there really is someone watching me." Zeal's voice trembled, desperation clawing at the edges. She was scared and pertrified at the same time. Fear trickled down the small of her back and made her curl her toes.

The cop heaved a sigh in frustration.

"We have gone over this a couple of times," he said. She could hear the slight agitation in his voice.

"Fine, if that's what you say, then it's okay," she said, her voice crisp and sharp. "But if anything does happen to me or my kid, you would be very well held responsible." That said, she hung up the call.

She blew out a breath and her eyes watered and tears fell in loops from the corners. She felt frustrated due to the fact that the cops weren't even giving her case the much needed attention that it deserved.

Zeal decided to peep out of the window again. There the figure was, across the street still standing and watching her. Goosebumps appeared on her skin and she shivered. She rubbed her bare arms to reduce the chill that had spread from her head to her toes. It was not from the cold, but from the deadly eyes of someone who she thought was a killer.

Someone was definitely out there, watching her and waiting for an opportunity to kill her. She didn't know what or why the person was after her. But she wasn't going to cower or shy away from what was to come. She would face it for one reason; to ensure the safety of her kid.

A thin coat of light blanketed the sky followed by an ear-piercing scream that caused her to subconsciously shiver. This was because, the thunder so happened to flood the clouds just as someone stepped in front of her view. Zeal wrapped her cream, colored sweater tighter around her body and staggered away from the window. She headed for her daughter's room.
