《It's Now or Never》Part 7

Steve Rogers, Wanda Maximoff, Natasha Romanoff, Sam Wilson, and I were in Lagos, Nigeria. I sat next to Wanda Maximoff at a cafe as we scanned the area. I watched as she adds sugar to a cup and stirs it. After Sokovia, Steve spent a lot of time training Wanda, Sam, and I. Vision would help too and Rhode stopped in occasionally. It was great because I got to spend time with Steve doing what he loved to do and to grow closer to Natasha and Wanda, plus the others when they were there.
"All right, what do you see?" Steve asked us over the earpiece interrupting my thoughts.
"Standard cops. Small station. Quiet street. It's a good target." I answered back as I took a sip of my tea.
"There's an ATM in the south corner, which means..." Steve trailed off.
"Cameras," Wanda said, finishing his sentence.
"Both cross streets are one way," Steve said back.
"So, compromised escape routes," I said placing my teacup on the table.
"Means our guy doesn't care about being seen, he isn't afraid to make a mess on the way out. You see that Range Rover halfway up the block?" Steve said.
"Yeah, the red one? It's cute." Wanda said smirking at me.
"It's also bulletproof, which means private security, which means more guns, which means more headaches for somebody. Probably us." Natasha butted in.
"You guys know I can move things with my mind, right?" Wanda said,
"Looking over your shoulder needs to become second nature." Natasha snapped back.
"Anybody ever tells you you're a little paranoid?" Sam finally spoke.
"Not to my face. Why? Did you hear something?" Natasha joked.
"Eyes on target, folks. This is the best lead we've had on Rumlow in six months. I don't want to lose him." Steve snapped at us like the father of the group.
"Easy honey. We can work and play." I joked.
"If he sees us coming that won't be a problem. He kind of hates us." Sam said.
Wanda and I soon noticed a garbage truck pushing its way through traffic, with no regard to pedestrians or other vehicles. Steve soon realized it too.
"Sam, see that garbage truck? Tag it." Steve said.
I watched from across the courtyard, the back of Sam's Falcon jetpack releases a small drone, Redwing. It flies down to scan the garbage truck.
"Give me an X-ray," Sam commanded the drone. We all listened closely in our earpiece for Sam to speak.
"That truck's loaded with max weight. And the driver's arm." Sam finally said.
"It's a battering ram," I yelled into the earpiece once I realized what was going to happen.
"Go now," Steve commanded.
"What?" Wanda said confused.
"He's not hitting the police," Steve says.
I stand up from the table and see where the truck is heading, INSTITUTE FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

I look over and see a man is sitting in the guard station. He looks over as the garbage truck comes towards the gate. The driver jumps out, and the truck slams into the guard station. Two trucks rush into the compound through the newly-made hole. Soldiers in black armor emerge from the trucks, firing their rifles around the courtyard. Four soldiers fire gas canisters into the building.
Steve is the first to arrive and takes out several of the soldiers.
"Body armor, AR15s. I make 7 hostiles." Steve says.
Sam flies in and up to a rooftop, spinning and using his wings to block gunfire. He takes out two soldiers.
"I make 5," Sam said.
Wanda and I arrive at the fight now. She flies over the rooftop and into the courtyard, blocking fire with her powers. She takes control of one of the soldiers and lifts him upward. I ran over with my guns in hand following behind Wanda.
"Hayes," Wanda yells to me as she holds the soldier still with her powers. As I run to get to the building, I shoot him down as I run by her.
"Four," I call out.
Redwing then flies by, scanning the inside of the building.
"Rumlow's on the third floor," Sam says.
"Wanda, just like we practiced," Steve says to her.
"What about the gas?" Wanda asks him.
"Get it out," Steve said back.
Wanda uses her powers to lift Steve up and through the window. He grabs a soldier and pulls off their gas mask. Wanda then uses her powers to remove the gas from the building. I stand in front of Wanda protecting her as Sam and I exchange fire with the other soldiers.
As we continued to take out the soldiers, Steve came over the earpiece.
"Rumlow has a biological weapon."
"I'm on it," Natasha calls out.
She jumps off the motorcycle and it skids toward a soldier, taking him out. She runs forward, taking out soldiers through hand-to-hand combat and with her Widow's Bite cuffs. Rumlow comes up behind her and grabs her collar, dragging her onto a car. She fights back and zaps his neck, but no response.
"I don't work like that anymore," Rumlow said.
He throws her through the roof hatch into an armored vehicle, drops in a grenade, and shuts the hatch.
"Fire in the hole," Rumlow calls out.
Natasha takes out the soldiers inside, then grabs one of them to shield herself from the grenade. The doors blow open and she is thrown out. She coughs but is alive.
"You good Natasha? Looks like you could use a little help." I asked
"A little late now Hayes." She said with a cough.
Steve runs out onto the balcony and spots Rumlow aiming a mounted grenade launcher. The grenade slams into Steve's shield and he is thrown back inside. He scrambles to his feet as Rumlow fires two more times, throwing him out a window, onto a truck, and finally the ground. He struggles but gets his legs under him to stand.

"Sam. He's in an AFV heading north." Steve calls out.
Sam lands on the roof of a structure. He scans the area with his goggles.
"I got four, they're splitting up," Sam called out.
Natasha rides through the crowd, back on her motorcycle. She abandons it again and runs across the hoods of cars, in pursuit.
"I got the two on the left," Natasha calls out.
"Right," I called out.
Steve is also running across cars. He spots a vest in the middle of a crowd.
"They ditched their gear. It's a shell game now. One of them has the payload" Steve says.
Someone throws a bomb at Steve. It sticks on his shield. Steve throws it in the air and the bomb detonates safely away from citizens. Rumlow comes up behind Steve and punches him in the back.
"There you are, you son of a bitch. I've been waiting for this!" Rumlow says.
I chased the other mercenaries glancing back to see if Steve was ok. When I got close to them, I pulled out my gun and shot it once in the leg. As he fell, he grabbed the man next to him for support, bringing them both down. One stood up and attacked me. I grabbed his arm that had the gun. I pulled him to me and used my body to kick him and knock him to the ground out cold.
The other man tried to crawl away. When I tried to knock him out with my foot, he grabbed me and made me fall to the ground. I quickly wrapped my legs around him holding him in place. I put him in a chokehold causing him to pass out. I then searched their bags for the payload.
"He doesn't have it. I'm empty." I called out disappointed.
I then saw Natasha still chasing the soldiers through the crowd. I ran after her in case she needed help.
"Out of the way!" Natasha called out to people.
She tackles one soldier and engages him in combat. When the other soldier arrives, she hurls a basket at him to distract him. She uses her skills to fight them and ends up face-to-face with one soldier. They point their guns at each other.
"Drop it. Or I'll drop this. Drop it!" The man said.
"He'll do it!" The other one said.
Redwing descends and fires at the soldier with the vial. He drops, and in the moment of distraction, Natasha fires at the other soldier then catch the falling vial.
"Payload secure. Thanks, Sam." Natasha says.
"Don't thank me," Sam says.
"I'm... not thanking that thing," Natasha said in a disgusted voice.
"His name is Redwing," Sam said proudly.
"I'm still not thinking it," Natasha responded.
"He's cute. Go ahead, pet him."
"Sam you're too weird." I laughed as I ran back to the courtyard where Steve was.
I watch as Steve and Rumlow are still fighting, neither one seems to have the upper hand.
"Come on!" Rumlow said.
Rumlow pins Steve to a building and extends a blade from one of his gauntlets.
"This is for dropping a building on my face," Rumlow said angrily.
Steve grabs Rumlow's arm and pulls the gauntlet off, only for Rumlow to reveal another knife. But Steve gets the best of him. Defeated, on his knees, Rumlow removes his mask, revealing a scarred face.
"I think I look pretty good, all things considered," Rumlow says.
"Who's your buyer?" Steve asks.
"You know, he knew you. Your pal, your buddy, your Bucky." Rumlow says.
"What did you say?" Steve said back. I knew how much that name affected him.
I ran up to Rumlow and Steve.
"Ignore him, Steve. He's just trying to get in your head."
"He remembered you. I was there. He got all weepy about it. Till they put his brain back in a blender. He wanted you to know something. He said to me, "Please tell Rogers. When you gotta go, you gotta go. You don't deserve ANYTHING, Steve Rogers. Nothing at all. And that's why she's coming with me." Rumlow said coldly.
He grabs my arm and pulls me to him as he activates his bomb vest. Steve flinches and I let out a scream as Rumlow's armor ignites, but Wanda keeps the blast contained around Rumlow who screams in agony. The only bad thing is Rumlow is still holding my arm where Wanda couldn't separate Rumlow and me with her force field. The blast surrounds the hand holding me, causing my arm to burn along with Rumlow's body in the force field. She uses her strength to pull us apart and lifts him into the air before she loses control, and the explosion going off, devastating entire floors of a nearby office building. Wanda sees what happened and covers her mouth in shock.
"Oh my..." Steve stares up, open-mouthed. "Sam... We need... Fire and Rescue... on the south side of the building. We gotta get up there."
Steve goes over to me and gets down on his knees as I lay on the floor. From where Rumlow held me was burned from the bomb. I was in a lot of pain and didn't want to see what the burn looked like.
"She saved me, Steve," I said trying to make the situation a little better. He gave me a slow nod before calling someone over to help me and as I make his way inside the building.

Tales From the Terran Republic
We tried, you know… We really did. We tried so hard to be… better… We actually were better once. No, seriously. We were enlightened, generous, peaceful… Stop laughing! We were! We were peaceful, dammit! No, I’m not “tugging your winglets.” It’s true! Look, if you’re going to be like that, I’ll just push the launch button right now. See ya, don’t wanna be… Oh, you ARE interested after all? Ok. Hey, I just got word that your captain will be ok. We were able to get him into a med pod quick enough… Of course, we tried to save him. Just what sort of people do you think we are?... Now that was harsh… completely accurate, mind you… but harsh. Anyway, like I was saying, we were a prosperous, peaceful people, and war had been nothing but a distant memory for over five hundred years before it happened... Before Yellowstone happened! You don’t mean to tell me that you didn’t know about that… massive supervolcano? Blew the Hell out of our planet? Two years where nothing grew?… Anyway, that’s what started it, the Sol Wars… Oh, you have heard about those, huh? Well, needless to say, all that enlightened, generous, and peaceful didn’t exactly make it through the two years of complete famine and the wars that followed… Maybe it’s more accurate to say the enlightened, generous, and peaceful among us didn’t survive… (laughs)… You’re right. It does explain a lot, doesn’t it? Probably for the best, though. “Enlightened” and “peaceful” aren’t really all that useful out here in the galaxy at large, are they? That reminds me; thanks for the ship. You guys did a great job with this one. Oh, don’t be like that. At least it was us what got you and not one of the really messed groups like the Harlequin or the Black Angels. We’re just going to take your shit. It could be worse… trust me... Well, anyway, we loaded the life pods down with some good food, and you guys can drink alcohol, right? We put in a couple of fifths in there, too. It’s about forty percent ethanol, so be warned. Most species will want to dilute that. We’ll drop your wounded off somewhere safe once they are stable. Your fleet patrols this area fairly regularly, and we’ll drop the distress beacon right before we jump… Well, It’s been fun and no hard feelings, right?… Oh, you want to know some more? Sure. I got time to kill… Let me tell you about this one pirate and her crew. They’re Terran scum, but they are still… Why do we hate the Terrans? Hoo Boy… How much time you got? *** It’s the thirty-second century, and humanity is now part of a galactic civilization comprised of hundreds of worlds. Humanity has been savaged by natural disaster and war and has been fractured into several separate populations, all of which loathe each other (some things never change). This is a gritty drama-driven rambling tale that swings between action, drama, horror, and plenty of very, very dark comedy. Warning: contains adult situations, absolutely horrible language, bathroom humor, implied ultra-violence, actual ultra-violence, drugs, alcohol, pirates, mercs, xeno prostitutes, moral ambiguity, deranged AI's with identity issues, giant commie space slugs, and a poor little frog girl who just wants to sell coffee. Updates twice weekly on Tuesday and Friday. *** Note: This story can get rough. Those warning tags? They aren't for show. I recently received a review and as a result I want to make one thing clear. Portraying something is NOT endorsing it! Many "heavy" topics are touched upon and just because a character says or does something does not imply that the author feels the same way. I selected the "Anti-Hero Lead" and "Villainous Lead" tags for a reason. Rule number one of this story is "no good guys". A good description of the story is, "bad people doing bad things to worse people". There are a few good characters, here and there, but they are the exception to the rule. If you want a hard-hitting, exciting, gritty sci-fi story that doesn't pull any punches, or shies away from "difficult" concepts, welcome! If you are set on a pure and noble knight that runs around and slays conveniently evil monsters and rescues totally innocent princesses... or your sensibilities are easily offended... You're not going to be happy with this one.
