《It's Now or Never》Part 6

After the dinner party incident, Steve Rogers had Maria Hill bring Sam and me to a safe house protected by SHIELD. We just picked up Sam at our house and headed to who knows where. When we get there, it was a small house in the middle of nowhere.
"If something happens, there is a bunker under the building. Just move the bookcase to get to the door." Agent Hill said to us.
Sam and I looked at each other confused.
"You're just gonna leave us here?" I asked a little pissed off.
"Well ya, but Agents are gonna do check in's every hour." She said back, reaching across us and opening the car door.
"We should have just stayed home," Sam said not getting out of the car.
"Come on guys it's not that bad," Hill said.
"Take us back home. We can protect ourselves there. At least we will be able to know they are coming there." Sam said angrily.
"Steve's not gonna be happy about this," Hill said to me.
"Home." That was all I said as I closed the car door and sat up straight in the car chair looking forward.
Hill let out a sigh as she told the driver what to do. When we got back home, Sam went to the basement and set up the beds we left down there. We used to sleep down in the basement after we came back from our tours overseas. The hard cold floor of the basement was what we were used to sleeping on overseas and help us get back into the swing of normal life. We both agreed to sleep in the basement just in case. I went upstairs to my room and grabbed my weapons. Downstairs I could hear Sam placing his stuff down on the kitchen table. I made my way downstairs with my things to meet Sam.
"How mad do you think Rogers is gonna beat you!" Sam asked as I entered the room.
"Who knows, but I was not staying in the safe house shack. We may be out of our league with these robot things but I'd rather be somewhere I'm familiar with if an attack comes." I said placing my stuff on the table next to his.
"Out of our league? This is in my league." Sam said with that stupid cocky smile.
"Can't fly yourself out of this one."
"Oh, nice burn. I'll get you back for that." Sam said back. There was a short silence before Sam spoke again.
"I know that some of your old missions involved taking out threats that tried to make their own iron man suit. Did you fight any robot men like Stark?"
"No. We were there to take them out before they did but no one ever came close. So many ruthless kills when those scientists were never even a threat or even close to making what stark made." I said letting out a long sigh before we both fell back into the comfortable silence.

It has been over an hour. Sam and I sat on the couch watching the news. The Avengers have gone underground according to the news anchor and are nowhere to be found. I started to get worried about Steve. Sam ended up falling asleep on the couch as I stayed up watching the news. My phone in the other room started to ring. I got up quickly and ran to it picking it up.
"Hello?" I quickly spoke into the phone without checking who it was.
"Hayes! Are you guys ok?" Steve asked
"I'm ok. Sam is too." I said sitting down on the bar stool in the kitchen.
"How's the safe house?" Steve said. I could hear people in the background
"About that. You had to see this place, Sam and I were not going to stay in that shack. We were better off in our own house. The place was in the middle of nowhere, at least here we are close to the Capitol so we could have warnings and backup maybe. Plus we know this place so if an attack comes we can handle it. We know where to go in this safe house." I said nervously, waiting for him to start yelling.
He let out a big sigh.
"I knew this was going to happen. I know you guys too well, especially you."
"You're not mad?" I asked.
"Well I am mad, but I know you guys can handle yourselves."
"Where are you? I'm watching the news and.."
"At Clint's house. His family took us in while we try and figure this out."
"Clint has a family?"
"Ya. No one knows, well now we do. They are protected by SHIELD."
We both went quiet for a while, just listening to each other breathe.
"Come home soon," I said softly.
"Always." He said back.
I then hung up. I held the phone in my hands as I sat on the barstool.
"Everything ok?" Sam asked in the doorway.
"Ya, I'm ok," I said with a big sigh.
"Good cause something is outside."
I shot up from my chair and looked in the direction of the front door. I looked back at Sam as we both ran to the kitchen table and grabbed our weapons. All of a sudden we heard a robot voice. I looked at Sam and grabbed my guns, placing them in my belt loops, and also grabbed my two electric sticks. Sam ran to the front door as I walked swinging my sticks around.
Sam opens the front door as I ran out. He followed behind me. It was two of Ultrons robots. Without hesitation, I ran to one of them and jumped on it repetitively hitting it with the electric sticks before dropping them and grabbing my guns, shooting it two times before it fell to the ground. I turned to see Sam had taken the other robot down too.
"Let's get back inside," Sam said as he started walking towards the house again.

"Good idea. Do you think more will come?" I asked following him through the front door.
"I have no idea," Sam said closing the front door behind me and locking it.
"They must be trying to find the Avengers and thought they must be hiding here," I said to Sam
"Do you know where they are?" Sam asked
"Ya but not exactly," I said back. It was true I knew where they were but not an actual location.
"Well, I guess that's a good thing," Sam said back.
"I have to call Steve," I said. Sam nodded in response as I walked over to my phone in the kitchen.
I dialed his number and waited for him to answer.
"Hayes?" Steve asked concerned.
"They came, well two came but they came."
"Damn it, Hayes. Are you guys ok?"
"Ya, we are. Took them out easily." I said glancing over at Sam in the doorway.
"There are more than we expected. There are so many of them so be careful. It could have been two now, but it could be more later."
"Alright Cap," I said trying to lighten the mood
I then heard him yelling at someone.
"Stark they came for her. We can't just sit around here and do nothing!"
"Steve?" I called out. "I'm still on the line," I said hoping he would hear me.
"Oh sorry, Hayes. I'll talk to you as soon as I can. I'm coming!" Steve said.
"No Steve don't, don't worry about me. You have bigger things to worry about."
"Damn Hayes fine, but I can't promise anything yet. Call me if they come back. I love you." Steve said. He then hung up before I could say anything. I just stood there with the phone still up to my ear, completely frozen.
He just said he loved me.
"Is everything ok?" Sam asked, snapping me out of my daze.
"Um.... ya," I said finally putting the phone down.
It had been hours since I talked to Steve. Sam and I watched the news as we stayed alert. We decided to stay upstairs so we wouldn't feel trapped in the basement. Sam had shut the lights off and closed the blinds. He said he thinks it will keep the robots from thinking anyone is home, we'll see about that. I had turned the volume off on the tv and put on subtitles.
The Avengers were in Sokovia. The city was flying and there was no way of knowing what was going on.
Sam then stood up and shut the TV off.
"I'm not watching this shit and you're not too. I'm not giving you a reason for a panic attack." Sam said walking past me to the kitchen.
I got up and followed him there.
"I hope he's ok," I said walking over to the kitchen island and sitting on the barstool.
"I'm sure he is. Now what do you want to drink, tea, coffee, water...?" Sam asked opening the fridge.
"I'll just have some tea."
Sam nodded and grabbed the kettle to fill it with water. Once he did that he went back over to the fridge and grabbed a beer.
"A beer really?" I laughed at myself.
"What? It's necessary right now." He said as he closed the fridge.
Once the water was boiled and hot, Sam grabbed a mug and placed a tea bag in it, and then filled it with water.
"Thanks," I said holding it out in front of me.
Sam and I ended up falling asleep on the couch after a while of just sitting and talking in the kitchen. I was woken up by the sound of the front door. Sam and I both shot up from the couch aiming our weapons at the door.
"Woah, Woah! It's just me." The man said.
"Steve!" I yelled, running over to hug him.
"You guys are awful at staking outs." Steve laughed at us.
"It's been a long couple of days," Sam said throwing himself back down on the couch.
"You won't believe how tired we both are," Sam spoke again.
"Well imagine how tired he is," I said to Sam referring to Steve.
"Well, it's all over now. We can all rest. And I see that the robots are still in the front yard."
"Ya, I think we are gonna turn them into decorations." I joked.
"Well, I'm going to bed. Waking me up in a year." Sam said getting up from the couch and heading to his bedroom.
Steve pulled me into another hug as we held each other.
"I love you, Steve. I didn't get to say it back on the phone."
"I knew you did. I didn't need to hear it cause I already knew."
I smiled into his chest at his words. I looked up at him and pulled him down into a kiss.
"Now let's get some rest," Steve said leading the way to our bedroom.
The next morning, Steve brought us to the new headquarters of SHIELD. He said he had a surprise for us. When we got there, Steve told us where to go and said he would meet us there in a second.
Sam and I walked down the hallway to a large open room. As we entered, we saw a woman standing in the middle of the room. She turned around studying us. She then walked over to us.
"Hi, I'm Wanda." I nodded in response and shook our hand.
"I'm Hayes and this is Sam." He waves at her and said hello. Soon Steve entered with Natasha and stood at the top of the stairs.
"This is where you will train and become true Avengers, so Avengers..."
