《The First Champion | BOTW Link x GN!Reader》Farewell

After staying at the Goron inn and sleeping on beds of rock, you and Link leave the city and start your trek south. Because of the magical properties from the armor, you were safe to glide down the mountain and avoid all monsters that spawned only to slow you down.

"Wait a second!" Link calls over the howling wind. You slightly gasp as you turn to him, thinking he spotted oncoming danger. He let go of his paraglider and dropped won on a cliff's ledge to your left. You join him shortly after.

"What is it?"

"I just remembered," he mutters and grabs the Sheikah Slate. You look over his shoulder as he pulls up the album and selects the fifth picture. The landscape was self evidently in Eldin, and nearby. The view pointed towards the castle southwest of Death Mountain.

"Good catch," you say.

Link looks up and scans the surroundings for the direction to head in. "There," he points, a little west from the castle.

"Let's go."

You and Link take a running start and jump off of the ledge together, gliding by each other's side. You pass over Lizalfos camps that were too far away to spot you. The first cliff you aimed for didn't have the right angle. After you pointed out a different one to try, the both of you finally found the fifth memory.

You patiently wait as Link recalls the memory. As soon as he relaxes his tension, he looks down again and replays the memory. "There's a line between courage and recklessness," he mutters barely audibly.

He looks up at you and sees your expecting expression.

"I saw the aftermath of a battle against monsters," he lowly shrugs. "Nothing drastic."

But when he looks back at the ground, you start to think otherwise. Link reflects back in his head the image of the slain monsters. There was a field of bokoblins and even some Lynels, and he killed all of them with just his sword? No shield? And all he received in return was a scratch.

A feeling of doubt silently passes over him. What if he can't prove himself to be as strong as he once was...

"Are you alright?" you quietly ask.

"Yeah," he waves you off, "I'm fine. We should get going. Ginger and Epona are still waiting for us."

It takes you a moment to recall where you left your horses. "Oh no, you're right," you say. You and Link jump off of the cliff again and glide down to the entrance of Eldin.

At the foot of the mountain, you are then reunited with your horses.

"Ginger!" you call to the patient horse as you break into a brisk jog. "I missed ya, buddy," you say and stroke his flower braided mane. He utters a soft neigh and closed his eyes at the affection. You look in your pockets for an apple but find none. "I am getting you a snack as soon as we pass an apple tree."

You hop on Ginger and hook your feet in the stirrups. You look over to Link expectantly as you grab the reins and see him join you in mounting his steed.

"Let's head home," you say.

Link turns to you and gives you a nod. "Let's."

The both of you head down southwest to Central Hyrule and follow the main roads leading east to Dueling Peaks. By now, neither you or Link had to Look at the map. All of the roads were so familiar to you after two weeks of travel.

Heading straight to Impa was tempting, but you were carrying so much weight of the Boulder Breaker and Great Eagle Bow, you wanted to drop them off at Hateno as soon as you could.

You and Link stationed your horses at the entrance of Hateno for what seemed like the last time. You walk in the town and turn right to walk across the earthy bridge leading to your house.

Inside the building you saved from being torn down, you see all of the champions's weapons waiting patiently on their mounts. You take a breath and walk up to the last available weapon displays before lifting the heavy breaker and mounting it in place.

You stand back and admire your work before walking to your left and placing the Great Eagle Bow on the bow mount.

You take a couple of steps backward and stand behind the table in the middle of the room, leaning forward on it.

Everything before you was so complete, but everything inside of you felt so empty.

They were dead. Your friends were dead and having the complete collection of weapons that used to be a part of them served as a cruel reminder. It was like a punch in the stomach. And that feeling was mutual between you and Link.

Though you've never asked nor said it out loud, the both of you felt so grief-stricken. One hundred years ago no longer felt like a past life that was distant and unreal. With most of your memories back, all those ages ago felt like a real part of you presently.

"What do we do now?" you ask the general air, but mostly Link.

Beside you, Link drew a deep breath and lifted his eyes from off the ground. "We can start by going to Impa and telling her of our success," he says and walks to lean on one of the dining chairs. "After that, we still have some captured memories left. Then I guess..."

"We face Ganon..." you finish for him. He nods next to you as a sickness spreads in the air.

There is a very great chance that neither of you would make it out of that castle alive. You will yourself to accept that. From now on, you are going to treat everything as its last. No more attachments.

"Well," Link starts and turns on the Sheikah Slate before selecting the album. "Wanna stick to tradition?"

You look at the screen he slid over to you and see it is the picture of the Chilly Mushroom Risotto. A smile spreads to your face, and you nod.

"Bon apatit," Link says as he places the dish in front of you that he insisted on cooking himself.

"Why thank you," you say and pick up the fork to scoop a hefty bite.

"Cheers," you both say in unison, making you both laugh. You put the fork in your mouth and close your eyes at the flavor.

The delectable, creamy rice just melted in your mouth. The flavor of the mushrooms were divine. The steamy warmth served an immediate comfort as soon as you swallowed the bite.

"Alright, this marks it," you say. Link looks up at you with slight worry. "You are officially a better cook than me."

"What?" he says with an offended but flattered tone. "No. No way."

"Behold," you motion to your bowl, "the evidence."

"But I can't possibly be better than you," he reasoned. "That's impossible. You just taught me a thing or two and I just--"

"Link, this is incredible!" you cut him off. "Shut up and let me compliment you."

He raises his eyebrows slightly in surprise and watches you pick up the bowl and continue eating. A clear tint of pink flushed his face as he slowly brought a bite to his mouth.

Just like before, the entire meal was finished in no time.

"I just had a thought," Link says seriously and curls his hands into fists. You look up at him over your bowl with a concerned expression. "What are we going to do with this place? Assuming we're not stopping by here again before Ganon."

"I never thought about that..." you say. "I do know that I wanna keep the weapons on display here. I don't wanna risk them breaking."

"Yeah, they'll be safe here," Link says.

"We can talk to Bolson," you suggest. "He can watch the house if we don't... uhm... return."

"Yeah," Link nods at the hard-to-swallow pill. "We better do that soon. It's midday, so we should get going to Kakariko before nightfall."

"Agreed," you say as both of you stand up with loud scraping of chairs.

You clean up the dishes and tidy the kitchen to perfection before you head out. You place a hand on the doorknob and look back in the house for the last time. 'Goodbye,' you think as you stare at your friends' weapons.

You close the door and look at Link who was watching your down face with concern. You take a breath and lift yourself up, forcing the grief off of your mind. You give him a nod and start walking across the bridge.

By a small cooking station sat Bolson and Karson, lounging by the fire with nothing better to do.

"Hiya kids," Bolson sings as he sees you approaching. "Need something from me on a fine day as this?"

"We wanna ask something of you," you start and glance at Link.

"Well whaddya need that calls for such somber?" he plays. "If someone was murdered, I s-wear it wasn't me."

"Link and I are going on a journey, and we have plans on returning, but those plans might not happen. If we don't return in a month, can you promise us to look after the house we purchased from you?" you ask and watch his eyes widen slightly. "There's some things inside that we really don't want stolen."

"What kinda road trip are you taking?" he asks carefully.

"We're going to Hyrule Castle," Link states.

"Hyrule Castle?!" Bolson shouts at a volume that can be heard by the whole village. "The castle? In Central Hyrule? With those robot creepy crawlers all over the place? No one's made it out of there alive! Why would you do such a thing? Folks have been treasure hunting in there all the time and have never returned! Don't search for gold, youngins. Enjoy what you have! Including your life!"

"We have to," you affirm. "Can you promise us that the contents will be safe?"

"I'm sure you have your reasons," he says and leans back on his hands again, "and I won't pry. Fame, fortune, heroism, whatever. I'll make that promise, but you kids better come back alive. Just stay near the studly side and not the macho side. Recklessness ain't cute."

"You gotcha," you say with Link nodding next to you.

You walk down the hill with Link by your side and pass the colorful houses. You reach the main entrance and untie your horses.

"Next destination: Kakariko," you say and hop on Ginger.

"Let's go."
