《Corrupt》23. A Muddled Mind

Trevor kept a secure hand locked onto my shoulder as he escorted me towards where the jet loomed in front of us. My face was turned down into a permanent scowl, though I could feel my anxiety continue to increase behind the strong front I was putting up.
His grip was almost painful, as if he was hoping to cause some sort of discomfort in me as we approached the aircraft. I could feel my injuries from throughout the night beginning to make themselves known to me and the constant throb of my head could cause even the strongest to grow exhausted.
"Where's Brooke?" I tried, worry for my friend causing my stomach to twist. "What happened to her?" My tone was pleading, though I didn't bother to hide that fact. I could tell from the expression glued to his face that he housed no sympathy for me.
He only ignored my questions, though his fingers increasing the amount of force they were applying to my skin gave me the knowledge that he had clearly heard me.
"What have I ever done to you?" My voice was hushed, quiet. "What did I do to make you hate me?"
Seconds passed by and I didn't think he was going to answer, until he jerked me furiously around to face him.
"You fucked your way out of the position you were in, how does that feel?" Trevor spat, the furious way his words were spat at me shocking me.
"Excuse me?" I questioned, taken aback by his words.
"You heard me. In the end you're just going to keep fucking guys and manipulating people to get out of things. You're a whore with nothing but daddy issues."
"Fuck you." I hissed at him, shaking off his hand from my shoulder long enough to send a flying fist in the direction of his face. A savage smirk twisted my lips when my knuckles connected with his nose and a grunt exited from his body. I knew the second my hit landed that it would be worth the excruciating pain radiating from my knuckles. "You know nothing."
"Fuck!" Trevor hissed out, already moving forward to lock my wrists between his palms. Blood leaked from his nose, spiraling past his lips and dripping from his chin. The look in his eyes spoke of his immense fury and I shrunk back at the sight of it. His hands squeezed tightly and I knew that I would have a set of matching bruises coloring my wrists. "Fucking bitch. I know that you fucked Jace to get to where you are and you must've been a pretty good fuck because you would be g-"
"You're wrong!" I interrupted him, twisting out of his grip as he grabbed my arms once more.
"Am I?" An ugly sneer covered his face, twisting my stomach sharply.
"Yes." I snapped, planting my hands on his chest and shoving him with all the strength I could muster, though it evidently wasn't much because he barely stumbled back. The ferocity grew on his face.
I didn't have time to shake him off before he was slapping a pair of handcuffs onto my wrists, only pausing to narrow his eyes at me as he did.
"You can't do this." I squirmed against his hold, feeling panic rise in me as I realized that I was completely vulnerable to him. Jeremy stood emotionlessly by his side. "I've done nothing to you to make you hate me! You're just assuming things. You're not going to get away with this."

"Watch me." He snickered, swiping his hand across his nose to staunch the blood flow that was continuously dripping down. "Jace would agree with me over you any day, Sweets. And he would definitely agree with me now. Now get your fucking ass moving and get in the damned plane."
Swallowing thickly, I forced my feet to move with his while my eyes scanned for anyone that was vaguely familiar to me with no luck. The need to escape only continued to rise, as well as my resentment for these people. I had allowed them to trick me into believing I was something more to them, when in reality I was nothing more than a pawn in their games.
With my nerves quickly growing, Trevor led me up the stairs and into Jace's jet with Jeremy following. With each step further into the interior of the jet, I could feel my chest grow tighter. I was completely and utterly trapped. A quick scan of the luxury plane alerted me to the fact that there was only a man I had yet to meet occupying the space and Greg chained to a seat, the sight of him causing a sliver of fear to snake down my spine, my stomach dropping.
"We're good here, Monty. Did Cameron and Riley head back already?" Jeremy questioned, addressing the man who had turned to face us, before dropping himself into a seat as Trevor paused in his steps.
"Yes, Sir." The man replied, his figure relaxing as he tucked his gun back behind the jacket of his suit. His eyes wandered to me, where he arched a single brow before running a hand through his inky hair. "This her?"
"No fucking shit." Jeremy scoffed, jerking his head to the door of the jet. "Now get out of here. I want to get back to Seattle and Jace wanted you part of his personal team here. The car is ready to take you back."
"You good here then?" Monty questioned, nodding towards Greg. "He's waking up finally - been heavily sedated for awhile. He's all chained though."
"We're good."
Monty exited quickly after that, mumbling something into a phone he had pressed to his ear.
Trevor yanked on the metal of my handcuffs, causing a squeak of pain to leave my lips as he tugged me closer to Greg. "Wouldn't you like to sit next to Greg?" A cruel smile curled his lips and he let out a dark laugh. "It would be sort of fitting actually, the perfect punishment for punching me." His brows lifted. "So you get to sit, chained, next to the man who was moments away from killing you. I hope you regret what you did."
I didn't give anything away, not wanting him to gain satisfaction from the way his words filled my stomach with dread. I tightened my hands into fists, tilting my chin definantly in his direction. "That sounds splendid, Trevor. How thoughtful of you." I spat at him, allowing him to shove my body into the chair.
"I thought you would enjoy it." He growled back, hooking my cuffs to the chair. "Hopefully he wakes up. Maybe then you two could have a pleasant chat."
"Hopefully." I gritted back, not allowing my gaze to stray from his dark one. He watched me for a second, before straightening to his full height, turning to move towards where Jeremy was seated.
I shifted in my seat, knowing fully well that it was impossible to get comfortable with my wrists chained the way they were. Internally, I cursed Jace and all the guys who had placed me in this position. I cursed them for their cold attitudes after what had happened tonight, for the way they had allowed themselves to grow on me, and for the pain they were causing me now that I realized it was all just an act. I should've known that they were never telling me the whole story and I shook myself for being so stupid as to believe them.

I squeezed my eyes shut, leaning my head back against the chair as the engine of the jet whirled to life. I could vaguely make out Trevor and Jeremy speaking in low tones, though none of it was very clear.
I had allowed Jace in and I was just realizing it. I could feel him in my chest, hurting me with the fact that he didn't care and never would. He was focused on business, on revenge, and surely not some idiotic girl that he had carelessly twisted into his sick plot.
My knees shook and I crossed my legs tightly together to avoid anyone from noticing. The hum of the plane would have been almost soothing if my thoughts weren't in such a turmoil
My stomach twisted sickeningly and I forced my eyes shut tighter. I just wanted to forget, to get him out of my system. My teeth sunk into my lip as I pondered that thought. Yes, that's exactly what I needed - to have him once and then be done with it, be done with him for good.
And the worst part was I had no clue how to do that. I had no clue how to rid myself of what I felt for him. Heck, I had no clue how to go on from this point. I could feel the exhaustion weighting in my joints, willing me to just give up. I didn't know how to fight or how to go about what was happening.
Greg let out a low groan, jarring me from my thoughts. I jumped in my seat, whirling to face the man. My cheeks burned when Trevor let out a loud snort, the mocking sound only causing the anger within me to rise.
"Scared?" He mocked, tilting his head at me in a way that had me wanting to smash my other fist into his face.
"How's your nose feeling?" I snapped back, studying the bloody fixture on his face. "Doesn't look too good."
His eyes narrowed at me, before turning back to his conversation with Jeremy.
I cautiously allowed myself to study the man beside me. A large and darkening bruise was steadily growing on the right side of his forehead. His swelling eye looked painful and gruesome and I winced at the sight of it.
"Going to keep staring, Babe?" Greg managed a croaky chuckle as he shifted in his seat, a moan escaping past his lips. "Holy hell, that stings."
I couldn't drag my eyes away from his leg. Someone had carelessly wrapped a bandage around it, though from the amount of blood that colored the cloth, it was clear it wasn't helping much. A snort had me snapping my gaze up to meet Greg's eyes, a smirk contorting his lips into something akin to a smile.
"His bullet just nicked me. He didn't want to do much damage or else he could possibly kill me and then he wouldn't be able to get anything out of me." He explained lowly to me, tilting his head over to where Trevor and Jeremy sat, who both hadn't noticed that Greg had spoken to me. "It would've been useless. Which was why he knocked me out. That was more helpful than the actual injury cause I couldn't fight back. The bullet still hurts like a bitch though."
His hushed words had my gaze moving to stare at the two men I had arrived with.
Greg shifted, flexing his wrists against the handcuffs that chained him to the seat. "Honestly, I'm surprised those two would let you sit by me, after everything that's happened..." His voice trailed off, a bushy brow cocking in thought. "Actually, I'm not surprised at all. They don't seem to care much."
I nibbled on my lip, unable to comprehend why this man was communicating with me. Heck, just hours ago he had held a knife to my throat. He seemed to sense the confusion that was drawing blanks in my mind because he let out a quiet chuckle, the sound sending chills up the length of my arms. "I'm bored. Plus, I'm thinking that we could maybe help each other."
"What do you mean?" I mumbled back to him, staring down at my bruising wrists. I hesitated, unsure if I should even listen to what he had to say. "Hours ago you were about to kill me."
He scoffed, rolling his shoulders as if he was trying to get comfortable. "I think you need my help as much as I need yours at this point."
Guarded, I watched him carefully, looking for any sign of a lie in his stare. He only watched me back emotionlessly. "You know I can help you. I'm sure you want out of this life and I can give that to you if-"
"Hey!" A shout caused a squeak of shock to exit my lips. Trevor had stood up, moving towards where we were both sitting. "Don't fucking talk."
"You wanted us to, remember?" I smirked at him callously. "We're actually having a very pleasant conversation, thanks to you."
"I've had enough of your mouth." Trevor barked, snagging a bag off the table that sat next to our chairs.
"Trevor..." Jeremy hesitated, watching as Trevor pulled out a syringe filled with a clear liquid. "I don't think-"
"Be quiet." He commanded him, moving towards me. "She deserves this. Jace would agree."
"I don't think so." Greg laughed out loud, shaking his head. "In fact, I'm willing to drop a couple thousand that he really wouldn't."
"Did I ask you to comment? You're next." He spat at Greg, before bending by my side.
"What are you doing?" I hissed, feeling panicked as he moved the needle to my bicep. I squirmed against my restraints, wishing I could scream for someone to help me but knowing that no one would.
He stayed quiet, instead stabbing the needle into my arm with a force that had me crying out as he injected whatever substance into my body.
"Hopefully that was the right dose." Greg mused, his eyes narrowing on the bruises that covered my face. "Or else it won't just be your face ruined. It'll be your life too."
"What was that?" I panted, staring in horror down at my arm.
"It'll just sedate you for a very long time." Greg rolled his eyes, watching calmly as Trevor approached him with a similar syringe. "That is, if it doesn't kill you. The idiot injected you with the dosage for a man my size."
"It won't fucking kill her." Trevor hissed, injecting the same into Greg. "Sleep tight, you both." Trevor rolled his eyes, moving back to his seat.
I felt a drop of sweat bead at my temple as I struggled to stay awake, though I knew it was a losing battle. I turned to Greg and he must've seen the panic in my eyes because he shook his head. "Calm down. You'll survive, I know you will. And when you do, then we'll talk."
And with that, my world turned hazy, before going completely dark.

Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
