Clinical.
The first thought and smell that appeared in her blank mind. She frowned. Clinical?...Hospital? Morgue? Which one is it. Eyebrows drawn together and her lips brought down, Nicolette began to try and recollect her last memories before she slipped into a dark abyss. Much to her dismay she drew blank everything seemed to be hazy.
With great difficulty her eyes pried open slowly. It seemed as though her eyes opened one after the other. The florescent light shined over her eyes forcing her head to the other side. What came into view were the machines that seemed to be connected to her drawing more question marks than answers. Blinking a few more times the machines became more clear. I'm stable. Nicolette after a quick read over the monitors.
Prying her lips apart Nicolette moved her tongue around her dry and musty feeling mouth. With a few smacks of the lips and a dart of the tongue, in an attempt to wet her lip, her hand darted upwards only for it to be drawn back. Nicolette's frown deepened as she lifted her head slightly to see that her wrist had been cuffed to the bar of the bed. Her head fell back with a sigh of confusion. Turning her head to the opposite direction she then saw that someone had recently been sitting in the seat besides her bed. A steaming cup of what seemed to be coffee sat on the small coffee table that was infront of a couch.
Nicolette's nose scrunched at the clinical smell that drown out the smell of the coffee. Her eyes scanned the area and it seemed to be a simple single hospital room. To the naked eye that's what it seemed like, however, Nicolette caught the camera in the corner of the room and the shoulder of what seemed to be a guard standing outside her "hospital room".

There was no hustle and bustle beyond the door. No matter the time of day a hospital always has some sort of hustle or bustle, however this hospital was silent. Silent, disregarding the repeatitive sound of the monitor and the occasional noise from a walkie-talkie or earpiece. Her eyes didn't miss the bars on the window.
Nicolette fell back onto the pillows after taking in more of the room. It was clear to her that she was not in any regular hospital. Then again when has she ever? A large cat like stretch and a yawn helped release some tension and stiffness in her joints and muscles. Against her better judgement she sat up right and stretched as much as her restraints allowed her.
Looking down at her left arm she scoffed at the cast that went from her forearm to her thumb. Now how did this happen? With a shake of her head she brought her cast clad hand up to scratch the itch in her head.
Just then the door unlocked and in walked in a group of white lab coats followed by a man and a woman. Scanning each face she didn't recognise any of them. Nicolette watched as the doctors began to check the monitors and her vitals. Her eyes searching for any suspicious movements. Any sudden movements caught her eyes.
"You are very alert for someone who's been asleep for three days." A doctor said followed by a chuckle.
Nicolette tilted her head to the side examining him. Was that a joke? She blinked several times as she studied his movements. Her gaze making the man slightly uncomfortable to the point he cleared his throat and tried to focus on his tasks at hand.
Subconsciously Nicolette grabbed the doctors hand that pulled on the cast clad arm. Her grip firm as her eyes scanned the woman for any form of suspicion. Her head tilting from side to side out of habit. Almost cat like movements. Stealthy and precise.

"I'm just checking the numbness of your hand." The doctor stated in haste as the grip became unbearably painful.
Squinting her eyes at the woman Nicolette slowly loosened her grip. Once loose enough the woman escaped her grasp with a sigh of relief before clearing her throat and adjusting her clothing in attempt to maintain professionalism.
A flash light before her eyes caught her attention. Nicolette tilted her head away from the light as she blinked several times. Despite her obvious avoidance the doctor flashed her eyes once more. Out of instinct her cast contacted with his temple. As the doctor clambered to the ground a throbbing ache spread through her arm. Nicolette's nose scrunched slightly at the discomfort. Everyone paused as their eyes shifted between her and the man on the ground.
The man who seemed to be in charge cleared his throat. "Dr. Rizzo, how is she?" His voice held so much authority it would make anyone quiver. Nicolette on the other hand didn't seem to be affected by him or his presence.
"Physically everything checks out besides the cast arm. We will have to perform an X-ray to ensure that the bone didn't shift again." Dr. Rizzo began. "She seems to have feeling in her upper body but we won't be certain about her lower body. Mentally we won't be sure how she is until speaks."
"Didn't you say at the pick up she was speaking so many languages?" The woman on his arm spoke. "How will you know which one to speak to her in?"
"I can speak English if you had asked." Nicolette sighed as she layed back in her bed and stared at the florescent light. The mixture of her dialects in her accent very prominent.....

Alex was dying, and all the millions his father had left him meant nothing. The life he had been so eager to embrace, to do the memory of his father proud, would soon come to an end. Cancer. That ugly, terrible word. He had tried to be strong for his mother, even when the treatments left him violently ill, his body wracked with pain, his friends and even his girlfriend leaving him almost as fast as his once impressive physique wasted to nothing under the ravages of his illness. And just when he thought all hope was dead, a couple discrete referals placed by high-powered friends of his family got him an exclusive spot at the most sophisticated cryonic facility in the world. He didn't know if there was such a thing as an afterlife, but part of the package included uploading a copy of his cortex into a digital universe filled countless worlds to explore, where he could embrace whatever class or profession he could dream of. All of which sounded hell of a lot better than the miserable death waiting for him in the real world. In the end, he signed the paperwork, putting his pathetic flickering life in the hands of potential quacks and charlatans. After all, with death just days away, what did he have to lose? Even if he could never be successfully revived, he could at least adventure his heart out. (Authors Note: Books 1-6 are now live on Amazon and here is a link if you wanted to check it out! A Titan's Crusade
Erik Thayne spent most of his life being brutally ridiculed and tormented for his weight and physical appearance, among other things. A social pariah and diagnosed with an eating disorder no one has an explanation or treatment for, Erik spent years trying to overcome his issues with his personal image and escape the ridicule and vicious torment of his peers. After years of dedicated effort, and a fresh start in a town away from his childhood and adolescent tormentors, he had finally begun to truly realize what he'd been striving for all along. Only, fate apparently has other plans because in the blink of an eye, Erik found himself snatched from Earth and taken to another universe, another world, where he is offered the chance to be more than he'd ever imagined. Now, he has to fight to restore the Balance between Chaos and Order on a world of swords and magic, in a universe governed by the System's laws, which resemble those of RPGs from Earth. Erik learned to embrace the things about himself that others taught him to hate, using them to reforge his physical identity into something more removed from his old self-loathing. But can he learn to embrace the darkest parts of his mind just as he did the reviled aspects of his body and become who he needs to be to succeed in the task set before him? It might just prove easier to stalk in the dark as a monster than to walk in the light as a man... *This is my first time publishing anything I've written to a public audience. Due to formatting issues, I forwent traditional stat-screens for something a little less problematic, delineating stat screens by separating them from regular text with horizontal lines in a lighter-grey coloration. Let me know if you like them or not. Criticism is entirely welcome, but please don't hate on my work after only reading 1 chapter. This is a writing project I intend to complete but I have committment problems so we'll see how long this goes on. Also, fair warning, as the description implies, the main protagonist is intended to be someone who has been treated cruelly, developed antisocial tendencies, and ultimately has to question his own humanity--or lack thereof. This story is not intended to be brutally dark but I will definitely be trying to follow a darker theme. It is intended to be violent and some scenes later in the story might be...alarming. There will likely also be some light, non-graphic (think more implied with crude jokes and conversation than actual details, there will be no full-blown sex scenes)relationship scenes planned later and if you're opposed to either a bisexual or gay main character, stay away. I haven't yet decided which way he's going to swing but the odds on him being straight are relatively miniscule, and I've always wanted to write a story about a gay man who basically looks like a lumberjack because who doesn't like giving conventional stereo-types the middle finger? This will NOT be a harem story, and I have no intention to focus on romance over action--it's a consequence of character development where I'm concerned, not the be-all-end-all of the story. The cover-art does not, in any way, belong to me. It was an image titled the Druid King (by duskanmarkovic according to the file name) which I found on Google Images. Until I can get something commissioned, this is the best stand-in image I could find.
