《All I ever wanted》62. One last time

The sky is a clear dark blue color, cold and unsettling, sporting a few white spots- some sparkled while others didn't. It was a vast, eternal space that brings appreciation to the coziness of home. The car roars to life, trailing its tires down the road while occupying four people within its seats- Gray, I, Ashley, and Zyair.
Amy, Zoe, Aaron, Elliot, and Jake tagged along in Jake's car. I still didn't like Amy as the thoughts of when she tried to steal Gray from me arises in my head at the mere sight of her, but I wasn't against her coming along. We needed all the help we could get.
I felt quite bad about leaving the rest of the senior class out of it, but Zyair had said the fewer people that know, the better our plan would go. However, all I knew was that there's no way the school would allow another senior prank day after what we do tonight.
Tomorrow also happens to be inspection day, a big day for the school principal and teachers like Mr. David, our homeroom teacher, who enjoys sucking up to the higher authorities.
"Did you get the keys?" Zyair asks Jake once we pull up to the parking lot and meet with the rest.
"Would we be here if I didn't?" Jake raises his hands, jingling the keys with a grin.
Ashley and Aaron pull out the materials and boxes from the car and place them on the ground as Jake opens the school gates.
"Ladies and gentlemen. This is it," Jake widens his arms as the gates crooks open. I check the time on my phone, which read midnight. The school grounds are as quiet as a graveyard, which felt weird because I've been used to it being as loud as a Coachella party.
My eyes run over the eerily dark building with the dim street lights overshadowing it. A chilling feeling creeps up my skin, and I wrap my arms around myself.
"Are you sure we should do this?" I raise a questioning brow.
I was excited on the way here, but now that we've arrived, I couldn't help but second think about our decisions. We could get caught, and knowing Mr. David, he wouldn't let it slide. It would only be a bad record on our report, especially for Ashley and Gray with their scholarships.
"Do you want to go to the school farm and wait for us then?" Jake turns his head to me mockingly. "You know, chill with your fellow chickens."
I roll my eyes and walk over to Gray, who was pulling a cart our way. We had spent the entire day coming up with different prank ideas, compiling them together, and I was pretty satisfied with my contribution.
For months now, the school's heater has been broken, forcing us to come to school in multiple layers of clothing while the school promises us the heater would be fixed the next day. But as usual, their next day never came.
So I thought it would be best to glue the windows open and really maximize the atmosphere to the fullest. There hasn't been snow in a few days now, but if it could snow overnight, that would be the best. So fingers crossed.
"Before we begin. Let's divide ourselves into two groups so we can get this on time," Zyair says, pointing his torchlight in our direction. "Gray and Dove. Ash and I. Elliot and Aaron. Zoe and Jake. Amy..."
He stops when he realizes there's no partner for Amy.

"I could go with Gray and-" Amy begins, walking in Gray's direction.
"No." I stand in front of Gray, staring Amy down as hard as I could.
Amy takes a few steps back, holding her hands up defensively, a crooked smile on her lips. "Okay."
I could feel Gray's eyes at the back of my head. "What?" I turn to glare at him.
"Nothing," He smiles, unable to contain his grin.
What was so amusing?
"Amy, you should come with Ashley and me. We could use the extra pair of legs," Zyair says without raising his head, his eyes running over the list in his hands.
Silence engulfs us after Zyair's words. As much as he tried to play, hide or avoid the conversation about his legs, we all knew how much it bothered him. Football was also his entire life as much as it was Gray's and the rest. Now he couldn't play football. He couldn't do the basic things like walking, running, or swimming. I knew I would be bummed for at least a year if that had happened to me, but Zyair wasn't.
Not once did he ever bring it up or blame anyone for it. And for that, I was jealous of him. The fact that he tries to see the bright side of things in every situation was truly commendable.
"Okay, Zoe and Jake, you guys have to bring out the table to the hallway. Ashley, Amy, and I will bubble wrap the classroom floor, and you guys can bubble wrap the hallway after," Zyair says, earning him a nod from Jake.
"Gray and Dove, the teacher's lounge, and the principal's office are all yours. You have to fill up the rooms with the rotten eggs and mayonnaise balloon."
"Why do we get the gross ones?" I scrunch my nose up in disgust, the mental smell of mayonnaise returning to my memory. When I think about the rotten eggs from earlier today, I almost gag in my mouth.
"Because I'm with the clipboard, and I say so," Zyair stares blankly. "Aaron and Elliot get to glue all the windows open," he adds, pointing to the box next to him.
He stares down at the clipboard in his eyes, making sure he didn't overlook any detail. When he's satisfied, he nods. Zyair had taken a clipboard from his dad's office this morning for authority purposes.
"Okay, that's it. Everyone spread out!"
Zyair's loud announcement is followed by our shuffling footsteps as we struggled to pick the boxes for our respective areas. Gray carries two boxes and walks up the stairs while I take one. The balloons are already filled with mayonnaise and rotten eggs, so all we had to do was arrange them meticulously in the rooms.
We start with the principal room. Once Gray opens the box, the room fills with the pungent smell of the eggs, and I could almost see the green fumes wafting in the air like in the cartoons.
"Ugh!" Gray scoffs, rushing to open the window. "I don't think I can ever eat eggs again."
I nod my head in agreement, pinching the bridge of my nose. "Where did you get rotten eggs from anyway?" I ask, recalling the eggs were Gray's idea.
"I know a guy who knows a guy."
He grabs a balloon from the box, holds it at arm's length and places it carefully at a corner of the room. "I'm so going to kill Zyair after this."
I chuckle and join him in the arrangement. "Would you still love me if I were rotten eggs?"

Gray stops in his tracks and turns to me, an amused expression on his face. "No."
I feel my smile falter at the certainty in his words. "Wow," I scoff. "Are you serious?"
Gray raises a brow, his eyes scanning and assessing my face. "Are you?"
"Yes," I reply honestly.
He walks towards me, stopping just a few inches from him. He places his hands on each side of my face, the cold metal from his rings sending chills down my spine. "I would still love you if you were a rotten egg. I would still love you even if you didn't exist." He places a kiss on my forehead.
I smile and tip my toes to place a peck on his lips. "Me too. I would still love you even if you were a rotten egg."
"Why?" he chuckles.
"Cause it's you."
"But don't you get, it wouldn't be me anymore."
I pout my lips at his words, falling back on my comeback because I didn't have any. "Well, whatever."
It takes us two hours to fill up the principal's office and another two for the teacher's lounge. The balloons finished before we could fill up the teacher's lounge, but I think the damage done is enough.
We lock the door and meet Aaron and Elliot standing in the hallway, near the windows, laughing and flirting with each other.
"Is that how we look?" I lean in to whisper in Gray's ear as we walked towards the guys.
"No, we're cuter." He wraps his arms around my shoulder and whispers in my ear.
"You guys done?" Aaron asks, standing straighter the moment he sees us.
I nod. The time was a bit after 4 am which meant the janitors and other staff would soon start pulling up, so we needed to leave as soon as possible.
"Let's disappear," Elliot says with an excited grin, and we walk downstairs to meet the rest.
We stop at the edge of the stairs at the sight of Jake and Zoe applying the last of the bubble wrap next to us. They stand straight once they are done, spreading their arms gloriously.
"Beautiful," Jake announces, while the rest of us just stare, dumbfounded.
"So uh... Quick question," Gray strokes his chin. "How do you suggest we get out."
"We left a sp-" Jake's voice trails off when he sees the entire floor covered in bubble wrap. He then turns out to Zoe. "I told you to leave enough space for us to walk!"
"I did! But you covered them up again!" She yells in return.
Zyair, Ashley, and Amy open the door of one of the classrooms, with Amy popping her head out the door. "What's going on?"
"We are stuck," I reply.
"We can just pull them up and walk through," Aaron scoffs like his plan was foolproof.
Jake shakes his head and runs his hand over his mouth. "We tapped them to the floor, so it would be hard to remove."
"Then what do we do?" Ashley asks from the other side of the hall. "Do we make a run for it?"
"That's going to draw too much attention," Gray shakes his head.
"And I can't run," Zyair raises his hand.
"We can just pull the tape out," I suggest.
Jakes gives me an exasperated look and runs his hand through his hair. "The taping starts from that end. If we pull it out from here-"
Our intervention is cut shut when a loud bang echoed through the hallway, coming from the basement. The entire room goes silent, and we hold our breaths, waiting for another sound that doesn't appear.
"Scott? Stiles?" I call out jokingly.
Then footsteps follow. A thin light comes from the end of what seems to be a torch, shining brightly in our eyes, getting larger as the footsteps increase. Was that?
"Run!"
The word from Jake was all the motivation we needed to get moving on our feet. I jump down the stairs and sprint towards the door. The popping sounds of bubble wrap goes off in all and every direction as we ran out of the school doors.
I could hear the security guard faint calls, asking us to stop as the thumping sound of my heart from the adrenaline pumping through my brain fills my ears, prompting me to run faster.
Once I get out of the school door, another flash shines in my eyes, blinding my sight. My heart pace quickens but not from the excitement this time but fear. I stop in my tracks, almost accept ing defeat.
"Run! Go! Go! Go!" Zyair's loud voice booms in my ear as he trails past me. I watch as he's floating in the air over Gray's shoulder. Aaron follows closely behind, carrying Zyair's wheelchair in his arms, holding it up as some form of protection.
My smile grows wider at the sight of the boys, and I begin my sprint, heading for the car. The guards are a lot closer this time than they were before, holding their torch in our direction.
I spot Gray car and jump into the backseat. I place a hand on my chest to control my breathing as Gray starts the car.
"Is everyone in?" Gray yells. Ashley was next to him while I, Zyair, and Elliot were in the back seat.
"Open the fucking boot," Aaron bangs Gray's window, gesturing towards Zyair's wheelchair.
One security guard on our trail was on the big side, an advantage for us as he kept stopping after every four steps to catch his breath while yelling stop as loud as he could.
As Aaron throws the wheelchair in the car boot, the other guard places a hand on Aaron's shoulder. "Got-"
Aaron doesn't let him finish speaking as he jumps into the car boot and kicks him away. "Drive now!"
The car jolts, jerking us forward as Gray speeds out of the parking lot. Aaron is holding onto one of the headrests in the backseat for support, breathing loudly down my neck, but I didn't mind.
We all burst out into laughter the moment we hit the road, significant meters from the school grounds.
"That was fucking insane," Elliot pumps his fist, unable to contain his laughter.
"This reminds me of the time we caused a scene at the airport," Ashley throws her head back in laughter.
"I don't think I've ever felt such a rush before," Elliot rubs his hands on his thighs, swaying back and forth on his seat.
"God, the time the gangs came to the beach house during Zyair's birthday, I thought I would pee my pants," Ashley laughs.
"And my coma," Zyair shakes his head. "Fucking scary. I'm pretty sure the Angel of hell already opened the door to welcome me," he laughs.
We could all laugh about it now, but back then it was far from funny as it was one of the most terrifying times in my life.
We all go back and forth, relieving the memories we've had with each other, both the good and the bad, while having a good laugh about it. Aaron, Gray, and Zyair go as far back as their childhood days, telling us some of their craziest stories.
I place my hands out the window to feel the cold air hit my palm, rendering it numb without remorse. My eyes welcome the sunrise as the sun blooms over the horizon- a mesmerizing yellow shade of orange.
And as I sit here at this moment, listening to stories and hearing my friends laugh, I realize I shouldn't worry about the future and what it holds. I had always spent my time thinking of the future, that I sometimes forget there was a time when the present- moments like this were.....
