《Apollo and Daphne (Modernized)》Chapter 15

DAPHNE'S POV

"What!?" Pauline screamed in my ear. "That doesn't make any sense!"

"Leave her alone," Alexa said beside me. I grabbed my books and flipped my hair, then I turned to face Pauline who looked like she was about to stranggle someone.

"Why would Connor leave all of a sudden?" Pauline asked us. I could definitely see the concern in her eyes even though she kept forcing us to believe she hates Connor. We made a deal with the gods that we wouldn't say anything to Pauline.

"He has boarding school," Alexa said bitterly. I keep forgetting that she's a huntress now and she only did it for him. Milles or Connor or whatever. She promised she'd keep her distance and that she would try her best to forget him.

"Then why all the new kids showing up all of a sudden. I mean, sure they're all pretty freaking beautiful, but that wouldn't be fair right?"

"Why wouldn't it be fair?" I asked, knitting my eyebrows together.

"Because..." she trailed off and looked sideways down on her left, then she cursed silently. "I don't know. Give me the end of the day, okay?"

"Whatever floats your boat," Alexa said, swinging her shoulder bag and purposely hitting me and Pauline.

"What's your problem?" Pauline asked her and Alexa only shrugs. "Okay." Pauline closed her eyes while smiling sarcastically. "So, you're telling me that you guys just kicked me and my brother out of Mazies house on his birthday then all of this kids that showed up there is now studying here. Plus Connor's gone and a new sophomore suddenly replaces him?"

I shrugged. I really shouldn't be talking with her about this. Especially since we're being watched 24/7. Connor's accident really set the gods off guard.

"You guys are definitely hiding something from me and I have a feeling that you're not going to tell me what it is," Pauline said raising her hands in defeat.

"You guessed right," Alexa said sarcastically. Pauline looked hurt. She turned around, her black jansport backpack swinging, almost hitting Alexa, then she walked away without even saying good bye.

I turned to face Alexa. "What's wrong with you?" I asked harshly.

Alexa scoffed and was half smiling. "What's wrong with me? Why, I'm perfectly normal. I'm just a demi god who happens to be a huntress of Lady Artemi-"

"Shut up!" A voice said behind us. It was almost a whisper. I instantly knew that it was girl because of the southern accent. We then turned to face Aphrodite. "You are not suppose to be talking about this kinds of things. Talk about something else!"

"Like what?" Alexa asked rolling her eyes. Aphrodite glared at her.

"I don't know! The weather! Talk about the weather."

"Why would we talk about the weather? That's stupid and everybody would think that we're crazy for talking about it."

"Well, it's better to be talking about the weather than talking about your history, huh? People here would get suspicious. I have a feeling that we are not the only other wordly beings here."

"Let me guess, Aliens have come to attack us here at school," Alexa said then someone whacked her head. I looked at Alexa. Shocked. She looked angry. Like really angry. She then faced her whacker which happened to be Apollo.

"Not right to talk like that. Learn your manners," Apollo scolded. Aphrodite sighed.

"It's okay, Paul," Aphrodite said Apollo's name sarcastically. "I can handle it here. In the mean time, you" she gestured to me and Alexa "Call me Olivia."

"Fine. Olivia it is then," I said agreeingly. Then we all nodded and headed to our class. I had astronomy for my first class today. As I entered the classroom, I scanned the room looking for a vacant seat. Then I spotted one, just next to the classrooms pet turtle, Oscar. I've come to enjoy Oscar's presence ever since I started coming to school here.

As I sat there, I heard a few whispering flirty girls behind me.

"Have you seen the new kids!" One of them said. It must've been Amy. The brunnette.

"Yeah! They are like so beautiful! And they all hang out together like a clique!" That one must've been Zoe.

"Yeah... I mean, first there was Paul then all of them! It was like heaven answering our prayers!"

"Yeah, totally. Oh wait, shut up. Here they come!"

The last thing that Zoe said made me look up. The first one to come in was Ares, who liked to be called as Brad. Next came Artemis(she had her hair back to its natural color which was Auburn), who was now known as Artie. Then came in Miles, who everyone except me and Alexa and the gods thought was cute.

When Miles saw me, he smiled and sat next to me. I moved my textbooks aside so he could put his backpack on the table we shared. He always did have a habit of putting it on the table instead the floor.

"So, how's your new life working out for you?" I asked him and he laughed. "What?"

"It's going terrible. Just so you know," he said, turning around to wink at Amy and Zoe who hid behind their hairs giggling. Ugh. Girls and their flirtiness.

"Yes, I do see that it is going very very wrong, eh?" I asked laughing a little myself. When Miles turned to face me, I could hear Amy muttering something about how all the guys just love me.

"Whatever, anyway, what's your next class?" he asked me raising both his eyebrows. He took of his black cap and put it on the table, he ruffled his hair, drips of water falling into my open notebook.

"Algebra. I'm taking it with Pauline," I said with a relief that I'll be with someone normal I know, though I'm pretty sure Pauline doesn't want to see me.

"Good," he said, now taking off his jacket. I could see that he was wearing a checkered shirt and underneath was a blue shirt. Typical. Miles loves the color. "I have Algebra next too. And then Biology then break time."

"Wait," I said holding my hands up in the air in a stop position. "I have all does exact class too at the exact time. Did you do something or did you know who did this," I said the last sentence in a hush voice.

Miles leaned forward and I followed. "Yeah," he said. "They did it. Saying that we should be together at all times. Oh, here." He handed me something. "Eros gave it to me yesterday. I thought you might want to keep it. Besides, it's a give and return thing. You gave me this," he gestured to the necklace Hermes gave me on my first day in normality. "I don't know how you knew what this meant to me, but I felt normal with it. So, I thank you."

"Well, you're welcome. And thank you," I took the little thingy from him and opened it. To my surprise, it was a letter saying that Eros owes Miles for something and that in return, he could have anything he wanted that was related to Love. I looked at Miles. "Do you know about this? Did you open it?" I asked. He shook his head and looked straight ahead.

I think I dozed off for a few minutes or a whole hour 'cause the school bell rang. I stood up and walked towards the door.

I tried my best to ignore the kids that were gossiping about. I could tell that Miles was also doing the same, but he seems to be enjoying himself. I hugged my textbooks to my chest, then I heard someone coming up next to me. I turned around to look, it was Miles.

"What?" I asked nicely.

"This is awesome," he said with a big grin on his face. He looked like an idiot.

"Is what awesome, Miles?"

"This," he gestured to himself. "I am awesome." I stared at him. "What?"

"That's the biggest understatement of the century," I said, trying to copy how Aphrodite says it. Miles frowned. "Sorry. Just having a bad day." I nodded my head to the girls who were talking about me. Miles looked at where I was looking.

"D'you want me to go talk to them?" he asked.

"No," I shook my head roughly. "I don't want trouble. And of course, you don't want trouble. You're one of the hot new students right?"

He smiled again. "Yeah, I guess I am. But I'm definitely not hot. Just cute."

"Miles," I said.

"Yeah?"

"You're starting to sound like Apollo." Miles eyes widened in shock as if in realization that he was startingt to sound like Apollo. I checked my watch, we were about to be late for our next class. "We better get going if you don't want the albatross to scold you."

Miles sighed. "Sure," he said with a sad tone of voice.

As we walked down the hallway, we spotted Alexa coming in. I almost forgot that we had the same second period. Miles flinched. I looked back at him. He looked pale as if he'd seen a ghost.

"What?"

"I can't go into that classroom."

"Why not?"

"Alexa's there." I had almost forgotten about that. It was Alexa's choice that had broken them up. She made sure that the gods wouldn't tell Miles the truth and that they had to lie.

"You can sit next to me," I said. "Alexa always sits in the very back. I just sit right in the middle and it just so happens that I have a vacant seat next to me. Must be your lucky day."

He smiled but I could definitely sense the worriness. I touched his arm. "Don't worry. You'll be fine."

He nodded and we walked inside the classroom. As usual, Alexa did sit in the very back. Away from everyone else. She was fixated on the book that was on her desk. I tried to read the cover, but she was too far away from me and I didn't want Miles to think that I was staring at his ex girlfriend.

As we neared our seats, I didn't notice that Miles wasn't paying any attention to where he was going. He was relying on me to guide him, therefor, he tripped over someone's bag. Alexa looked up and saw me. I shrugged and held my hand out to Miles so he could get up.

Once he got up, he looked flushed. He kept his head down, his bangs practically covering his face. He looked ashamed. I had almost forgotten that a week ago, he had been like this. Clumsy and a loser. Everyone made fun of him. Everyone bullied him. Well, almost everyone.

"You okay?" I asked him, trying to get him to look at me.

He shrugged. "Physically, I'm okay. Socially, not so much."

"Great first day, huh?" I said trying to lighten the mood. He smiled shyly and sat at the vacant chair next to me. I sat down next. I looked at Miles who still had his head bent down, then at Alexa who looked sad.

"He alright?" she mouthed to me. I nodded. She nodded back and went back to reading her book. This time, I could definitely see that the cover says "Greek Myth for Kids." I knitted my eyebrows together. Alexa still isn't familiar to mythology? She shouldn't even be studying these kinds of things. It's in her blood, she should know about it.

I looked back up front and saw that the gods were coming in. Aphrodite came in first as usual. Oh, I mean Olivia came first. Next came in Athena and Artemis. I could see from the corner of my eyes that Miles leaned towards me. I faced him.

"Who are those two?" he asked in a hush voice since Aphrodite sat next to him and Artemis sat in front, Athena sat behind him.

"Artemis and Athena," I mouthed. Then as if on cue, Artemis turned to face us both and she held out her hand.

"Artie," she said. "Please to meet you two."

I took hold of her hand and shook it. "Daphne," I said a bit awkwardly. Miles did the same and Athena also held out her hand.

"I for one am Athena," she said. My eyes widened in shock, the goddesses glared at her. "Before you ask, I was named after the goddess of wisdom."

Everybody's expression softened after that. Me and Miles also shook her hand. Then Mrs. Tross came in with a heavy textbook on her right arm and a huge pile of test papers on the other.

"I see we have new students," she said loudly. "Would you ladies care to introduce yourselves?"

Aphrodite or Olivia, stood up first. "Olivia Taylor from LA."

Athena was next. "Athena Williams from Houston Texas."

Artemis next. "Artie Docks from Little rock."

Miles was the last one. "Miles Colter from Arizona."

"Well, nice to meet you ladies. I am Mrs. Tross. I would like it if you would only call me that and not Mrs. T," she said harshly. "Now, I don't care whether you're new or not but we have a schedule to keep up. So, get your pens ready and we have a test."

Everybody groaned. Including me. The three gods just kept quiet. As the albatross handed down our test sheets I could see that Athena was the most excited one, Aphrodite was the bored one like she had better things to do than this, Artemis was the one who wore the expression that I couldn't read. Miles looked like he was ready. I seemed to be the only who wasn't.

As I looked down at my test paper, I couldn't help but pinch myself. I hated this class and the teacher too. Being a tree seemed to be a better idea than this. I glanced over at Miles and something whacked my head back.

"No peeking at your seat mates test papers."

I looked back at my test paper and started randomly answering each question. Test one was 'Circle the correct answer', Test two was 'Enumeration', Test three was the hardest 'Identification'.

I answered all of Test one, half of Test two and none at test three at all. Athena was the first to finish. I knew because it had only been 3 minutes when she got up and handed her paper at the albatross's desk. Mrs. Tross seemed pleased with her. Miles got up next. Mrs. Tross still wore that expression she gave Athena.

Finally, I stood up and gave her mine. She didn't check it, instead she looked up at me with an expression I couldn't read.

When I sat back down, I looked at Alexa who was answering, then erasing. She glanced at my direction and smiled. I smiled back. I looked up at front and Mrs. Tross was taking a sip of her coffee that I didn't notice was there before.

Minutes had passed and Aphrodite was 2nd to the last to finish her test. She wore a smirk on her pretty face when she handed her test paper. Mrs. Tross looked at her test papaer and scowled.

Once Aphrodite had sat back down, Mrs. Tross stood up and the school bell rang signaling that class was over. Every student inside the room stood up, except the nerdy asian kid who was at the back. I wasn't referring to Alexa. A different asian kid. This one was a boy.

"Ms. Taylor, may I have a word with you before you leave class," Mrs. Tross said. It sounded more like an order rather than a question. Artemis shot Aphrodite a 'what-did-you-do' look. Aphrodite just shrugged. Athena looked like she couldn't care less.

"Miles, let's go," I said to Miles. He bent down and grabbed his backpack on the floor, and his pen rolled off of his jacket and into Alexa's direction. He just stared at it before snapping out of his trance.

"Okay, c'mon," he said, putting on his backpack with one strap only. "What?"

"Go get your pen!" I told him. "I don't have any extra's to lend you later."

"What made you think I don't have an extra."

"You use one pen for one week, Miles. You think I don't know?"

He shrugged, but before he could walk there. Alexa was standing before us. I always forgot how small she was because of her big attitude. She held out her hand and opened her palm, revealing Miles pen.

Miles took it and walked away without even saying thanks. I looked at Alexa who looked hurt, but when she noticed I was looking at her, she shrugged off the expression away.

"Sorry about that. He's been like that before we came in here," I said to her.

"It's cool. I deserve it anyway," she said.

"No you don't. What made you think that you deserve this kind of treatment?"

"Do you really have to ask that?" she asked and walked away too. I sighed and walked to my next class.

On my next class, I had the pleasure of spending it with mortals. Our teacher was absent so we basically had the whole period to ourselves. Me and Pauline talked about the new students. What I couldn't believe was that she thought Miles was cute. I was taken back on that topic. If she only knew that it was Connor, I'm sure she wouldn't even dare use the word cute to describe him.

"So, who's your date?" she asked me.

"I don't know," I answered. She frowned. I smiled. "Seriously, I don't know. I don't even think that I'm going."

"Don't be like that. The party is like a few weeks from now, plus my birthday is on that week."

"It is?"

"Yeah, my birthday is on the 26th. I don't want anything okay. I just want you to go to the dance with a date."

"I'm not much of a date kind of girl."

"Tell me about it. Anyway, there are lots of new guys here anyway. Go ask all of them for all I care. Just not Miles. I'm gonna ask him. But of course, I know better than to raise my hope."

"Why?"

"Miles is cute," she said in a sarcastic voice. "I have no chance with him. Plus, I think he'll be going with some cuter girl than me. Like a certain senior we all know and hate."

I knew she was referring to Alyssa. "He isn't going to the dance with her. Not in a million years."

"How do you know?" she cocked her head slightly.

"I just do, okay."

"That's not a good enough answer."

"He's not going. Period. End of story."

"Whatever," she shrugged and sat on my table. "You should go with Paul."

"I don't want to go with him. That's the last thing on my to do list," I said in a just-so-you-know tone. "Besides, he's going with his sister."

"He has a sister?" Pauline sounded like this was the first time she heard about it. I nodded. "Who is she? Do I know her?"

"The new girl with the auburn hair. Can't miss her," I said.

"Wasn't she blond before?" she asked me. I almost forgot about friday. It was the day that Pauline almost found out about everything.

"Yeah, but she didn't dye her hair if that's what you thought. Um, well I guess she did but she only did it to get her original hair color back."

"She's not originally blond? Then how come she and Paul don't look alike?"

"I don't know, Pauline. Honestly, these questions make me feel uncomfortable."

"Sorry," she said looking down at her shoes. "Hey, what about that new other kid. I think his name was Kerington."

"Kerington?" I said with a smile. Pauline looked at me.

"Yeah, him. I think he'd go with you. Do you know him?"

"Know him? We grew up together!" I covered my mouth. I blew it. Pauline's eyes widened.

"Really!?" she asked, suddenly Kerington came inside the class with a cool expression on his face. Pauline blushed when we both noticed Kerington was walking towards our direction.

"What do you want?" I asked him harshly.

"Sorry, but I happen to have this class for my third period so I don't want anything from you okay. And oh, the seat that happens to be next to you is the only vacant one," he snapped. I rolled my eyes. Typical Kerington.

When he had finally settled down, he cleared his throat. I sighed heavily. "What do you want now?"

"I don't want anything. Is clearing my throat means that I need something from you?" he asked and Pauline giggled. I looked at her with a confused look. "Don't mind her," he said to Pauline. "She has always been bitter. Ever since we were kids."

I made a face. "Shut up, Keington!"

"I'm sorry, but was I talking to you? I believe I was talking to the girl with the curls."

I rolled my eyes. Pauline seemed to be having a blast with Kerington. I rested my head on my desk since Pauline jumped off of it so she could sit in Keringtons. I closed my eyes and started thinking. Maybe I should go to the dance. But with who?
