《Elijah》42

About two days had gone by and Eli was having this piercing pain where his wound was that was so bad he sometimes had to stop what he was doing and lean or grab onto something for support. We didn't know why this was happening, so we brought him back to the hospital.

"We didn't find anything wrong. Have you been sleeping terribly? Laying or sitting down incorrectly?" Dr. Jun asked. He'd helped us when we first brought Eli here.

"No, if I even tried she'd nag me." Eli answered and gestured towards me.

"As she should." Jun laughed.

"Can you describe the pain for me one more time Mr. Matthews? You said it was like pins and needles?" Dr. Jun asked as he pulled out a chair and sat down.

"Yea, every so often it feels like somebody tossed in a bunch of push pins and they're stabbing me from the inside. I've tried ibuprofen and it doesn't stop it, it just makes it a little more tolerable."

"I see, rate the pain on a scale of one to ten, ten being the highest and one being the lowest."

"Eleven."

"Understood. Well, like I said we didn't find anything. We can try and fix your stitching, maybe that's the issue, some nerve tissue damage and whatnot, or I can provide you with a stronger medication in hopes that it'll end your suffering. Which do you prefer?"

"Uhhh..." he thought in a confused manner.

He looked at me.

"If you get your stitches redone, you'll be on house arrest longer, if you get the medication the pain could possibly stop without needing to do it. And if it continues then we can worry about your stitching." I explained.

"The medication is fine." Eli responded.

Sometimes it's hard to believe he's the older one of the both of us. The amount of health decisions I have to make for him is unbelievable. I don't know how he's survived this long.

"All right. I can give it to you here and then write a prescription for whenever you need a refill. Although I doubt you will." Jun said as he wrote something on a piece of paper.

"I'll be back in a few," he claimed and gave us a smile and nod before putting his chair back and leaving the room.

"You were doing so well." I stated and held his hand.

"I haven't done anything. You won't LET me do anything. I just sit around, eating, doing push-ups, or just staring at the ceiling. This shit doesn't make sense." he huffed.

"I know, baby. I'm sorry."

After a couple more minutes, the doctor entered back in.

"Here you go." Dr. Jun handed me the little cylinder that held Eli's medication. "You take one of these twice a day, once when you wake up and once when you go to bed. I have to warn you about side effects. Dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness or insomnia, headache, erectile dysfunction..."

I tried my hardest not to laugh at that.

"Or a rise in sexual urges/frustration..."

"Fever and/or nausea, I believe and do not combine the medicine with any alcoholic or caffeinated beverages or else you could send yourself into cardiac arrest. You shouldn't experience more than at least 2 of those side effects. It's nothing too dangerous or else I wouldn't have offered it to you. Are there any questions?"

"When will I be able to actually move around?" Eli asked. I guess he's never been a 'sit still' kind of guy.

"Well as of right now you can go to work. You're a pretty big guy, it's obvious you like to workout, and I can tell you right now that is not currently an option unless you want to tear yourself open."

Eli hated those words and his face and sigh proved it.

"Again, no alcoholic or caffeinated beverages should combine with that medication. Don't be afraid to ask your wife for assistance..."

'Wife?'

"Also do not operate heavy machinery, which just goes into the whole 'no working out' ordeal."

"You're killin' me, doc." Eli groaned.

"Well, you could not listen to me. Then you'd be killing you." Jun joked.

I snickered and Eli shot me a look so I stopped and shook my head to let him know I didn't find it funny.

"If that's all, then you two can be on your way. Get well soon, champ." Jun insisted then left the room.

"Champ? What am I, 6?"

I giggled at his sassiness.

"Someone's in a bitter mood." I said as I helped him get up.

"I was just told I can't drink or workout, but I can go to work and have a limp dick all in a time span of thirty seconds. I'm sure as hell not gonna be happy." he explained with a sarcastic grin.

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, your dick could either be limp or really strong." I stated.

"Yea, for your sake let's hope it's the first one."

"What-..." I asked, stunned.

We got back home and Eli immediately went into the kitchen and found himself at the liquor cabinet.

"Aht!" I said and went after him. I smacked his hand as he tried to open the cabinet.

"Ow-..." he said and shook away the pain in his hand.

"Did you really forget you aren't allowed to drink, that fast?" I asked with a hand on my hip.

"I haven't taken the medicine, yet!" he argued.

"No, but you will in about...three hours." I stated after looking at the clock on the microwave.

"So, no, liquor isn't an option."

He rolled his eyes.

"Did he say I couldn't smoke?"

"No, I-..." before I could finish he opened that same drawer from my first night here and took out his cigarette box. He lit a cigarette then put everything else back in the drawer and took a hit while holding eye contact with me.

"Didn't your mother tell you to quit?"

"Yea, why?" he asked and took another hit.

I shook my head then turned to go to his room.

After a few minutes, Eli had come in there, too.

"I won't need you at work with me, I won't do much and will probably leave early anyway," he said as he sat on his bed and took off his shoes.

"Wait, you're going back tomorrow?" I asked, surprised.

"Yea, I don't have anything better to do. Don't worry, I'm paying you for your assistance while I've been injured. Since you've technically still been assisting me."

"That's just me being a girlfriend."

"No, you being a girlfriend would've just been a few phone calls here and there checking on me and making sure I've eaten." He grabbed my hand and pulled me to stand between his legs then he held my waist. "You have spent days here, cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping when you didn't have to." He kissed me gently. "I don't think I deserved such kind treatment." he snickered.

"Yea, what would you do without me?" I joked and kissed him again.

"Well, for one I'd probably still have fruit in my fridge."

"Didn't I already apologize for eating the pineapples?" I groaned.

"Yea, but not the strawberries."

I sighed. "I'm sorry for eating all of your strawberries."

He chuckled. "It's alright, babygirl. I ate your yogurt."

"You WHAT?"

He laughed and kissed me again.
