《Hiraeth || F. Meizuo》Chapter 19

After shooting the commercial, Meizuo offered to drive me home and I tried to decline, not wanting to cause any more awkwardness between us but I didn't bring my car. So I had no choice but to ride home with him. I had changed out of my dress and into a black and white striped tee and dark blue overalls with the leg pants rolled up with some white Keds. I pulled my hair up into a loose ponytail.
The car ride was quiet for 30 minutes as Meizuo focused on the road while I fiddled with my phone. But from the corner of my eye, I could see him stealing glances at me. I was frustrated with the situation and decided to break the silence.
"Hey, Zuo?" I timidly asked as he hummed in response.
"Stop over there," I said as I pointed at the corner of the street. He stopped the car and looked at me as I got out of the car and he followed. He looked around and then back at me.
"So why are we stopping here?" He asked, confused. I gave him a small smile and grabbed his hand.
"Come on," I said as I dragged him towards a small convenience store. I went in and walked over to the freezer. I pulled out a tub of mango ice cream and headed for the counter to pay. Meizuo stood beside me as he looked around the store. After I paid, we went out and dragged him towards the beach. You see, there's a small beachfront here and I used to come here alone whenever I argued with my parents or just had to get away.
We took off our shoes and Meizuo grabbed my hand and led me to sit on the sand. I opened the tub and gave Meizuo a spoon. He smiled and ate the ice cream. We just sat there in complete silence, the only sound that could be heard was the soft crashing of the waves. I glanced at Meizuo who had a small smile on his lips. I took a deep breath before facing him.
"Zuo." I asked softly which made him look at me.
"Yeah? What's wrong?" He asked as he noticed my sullen expression.
"I-uh.." I started as I fiddled with my fingers nervously.
"Shui?" He asked.
"DoyouthinkAhSiandLeiwillbeokay?" I rapidly said which made him look at me in confusion.
"What?" He asked again.
"Do you think Ah Si and Lei will be okay?" I repeated.
"I don't know Shui. The situation's different now especially with Shancai involved. Why? Did you hear anything from Ah Si?" He asked.
"Ah Si told me that it was about time that he made it up to Lei. After he broke that Spiderman toy that Lei had when he was younger." I explained and Meizuo's eyebrows furrowed.
"What? What does he mean? Is he giving up on Shancai?" He asked and I nodded.
"I guess so." I sighed as I leaned my head on his shoulder as his arm wrapped around me.
'I don't have the strength to tell you how I feel right now Zuo. I just wanna stay where I am right now and enjoy this.'

A few days had passed since the commercial and the director said it would be out in a few days. Ah Si had told all of us (even Lei) to meet him at the Bridge club room because he had something to say.

"London? You're going to London?" I exclaimed in disbelief.
"It's not a big deal. My mom's business is there. It's normal for me to be there." Ah Si nonchalantly answered as he played with a deck of cards.
"Liar. You hate it in London. Are you trying to avoid Lei and Shancai?" Meizuo asked.
"Why would I avoid them?" He defended.
"Ah Si." I turned my head to see Lei who had just arrived.
"Just so you know, I'm not going to London because of you. It's my plan. I'm going to come back a better man." He declared and I smiled.
"That's great Ah Si." I said as he gave me a nod and a smile as he stood up to leave.
"Yeah right. You won't last two months." Ximen teased. I giggled but suddenly, I heard rapid footsteps coming down the stairs. Shancai. She stepped in front of Ah Si.
"You're going to London?" She asked, out of breath.
"Yes. Got a problem with that?" Ah Si spat, looking away from her. I frowned.
"Shancai, he's not sure yet. Talk some sense into him." Ximen said.
"I've made up my mind. No one can persuade me. I'm leaving tomorrow." He firmly answered.
"Tomorrow? Why didn't you tell me?" Shancai asked, clearly shocked at the news.
"Why would I tell you? Without me in the way, you can finally date him. Isn't that right, Lei?" Ah Si said as he turned to look at Lei who just stared at him in disbelief.
"You should get right to it. When I get to London, I'll find a blond girl and we'll go on dates
by the River Thames every day. It will be so romantic." Ah Si prodded. I frowned. Shancai was visibly upset and he was just making it worse.
"Fine. Go then. I'm happy you're leaving. I'll live happier without you. Goodbye forever!" Shancai shouted at Ah Si and ran back up the stairs, slamming the door behind her.
"Ah Si. That was too much." I said which made him turn back at me with a guilty look as I shook my head at him.

"A, C, W, X, D, D, B, D..." I heard a voice reciting as I walked into Ah Si's basement which served as another one of the boys' hang-out spots. I gave Lei and Ximen a hug before walking over to Meizuo and... Qinghe? What was he doing here? I sat down beside Meizuo while Qinghe sat across from us.
"You got three out of ten." Meizuo said as he passed Qinghe a clipboard with a list of letters. I raised my eyebrows in confusion.
"He wants a super memory like me so I'm training him." Meizuo smugly said as I let out a small laugh.
"What? If that's true, how am I supposed to get your super memory?" Qinghe groaned as he read through the clipboard again.
"You wanted me to train you. Have you lost hope now?" Meizuo asked.
"Why do you want a super memory?" Ximen asked as he passed me a mango shake. I thanked him as I sipped it.
"I'm a part of F4. I have to work hard to improve myself. I can't ruin our reputation." He proclaimed and I laughed.
"Qinghe, I'm sorry but didn't you quit? Why are you joining again?" I asked which earned a laugh from Meizuo and Ximen. Lei cracked a smile as he continued to read his book.

"I...Hey. Daoming Si, tell them, am I a part of F4?" He demanded as he looked over at Ah Si who was sulking at the corner of the room.
"Ah Si, what's wrong? You look mad. I guess it's because someone isn't here. We should have invited Shancai." Meizuo teased which resulted in me elbowing him to get him to stop.
"She can't come. She's working right now. It's tough work. I admire Shancai's energy. I would work with her but I have too many classes this semester." Qinghe said.
"Working? Wait it's a weekday. I thought she only worked at the tea shop on weekends." I said confused.
"She got another job at a restaurant. She helps out in the kitchen." Qinghe explained and I nodded in understanding.
"Why would you bother Shancai when she's working? It's none of your business." Ah Si suddenly said.
"None of my business? Everything about Shancai is my business. Why is it your business then? Aren't you going to London?" Qinghe retorted and I smiled as Ah Si grew speechless.
"Qinghe, you have the F4 spirit." Ximen praised as Qinghe held his head high.
"Since Si is going to London, I guess you can join F4 now," Meizuo added.
"I have already joined." Qinghe reminded.
"Shut up!" Ah Si shouted as he sunk back into his chair.

The next day, Meizuo, Ximen, Lei and I were at the airport to see Zhuang jie and Ah Si off.
"Ah Si. Don't miss us too much in London." Ximen teased as I laughed.
"I emailed you our pictures. You can look at them when you miss me." Meizuo teased which made me roll my eyes.
"Who wants to see your face? I'm not a woman." Ah Si complained.
"Ah Si, even a woman wouldn't want to see his face," I said which earned me a high five from Ah Si and a glare from Meizuo. I stuck my tongue out and laughed at him.
"You guys are like little girls. He won't be gone forever." Zhuang jie reminded.
"Zhuang jie, we don't care about Si, but we'll miss you." Meizuo teased which earned a smile from Zhuang jie.
"Hey." Ah Si complained.
"With you gone, nobody will yell at us or kick us. We'll feel so lonely." Meizuo continued as I stifled a giggle.
"Really?" Zhuang jie asked as Meizuo nodded.
"I'll miss you too. Give me a hug." Zhuang jie said as she gave Meizuo a hug. Then Ximen and Lei, who was reluctant at first but gave in eventually. I looked at Ah Si.
"Don't worry Ah Si. If they won't miss you, I will." I said as I pouted.
"Really?" He asked hopefully.
"Yeah. Who will I beat up if you're not here?" I joked which earned a glare from him.
"Oh come here you." He said as he opened his arms and pulled me in for a hug. I smiled and hugged back.
Ah Si has always been the closest to me out of the 4 of them besides Meizuo. He was like an older brother who always looked out for me and acted much more like my family than my parents ever did. He and Zhuang jie were more like my parents than my own. I would go over to their house whenever my parents would bring along Jie to meet some business partners. Zhuang jie would cook for me while Ah Si played with me and read me some books. It was endearing to see that side of Ah Si. I just hoped it wasn't too late for him and Shancai.
"Have you said goodbye to Shancai?" Zhuang jie asked as Ah Si and I pulled away.
"Whatever. Why should I say goodbye to that ugly thing?" Ah Si spat which made Zhuang jie pull his ear and twist it.
"I'm an elegant, beautiful, graceful, and gentle woman. How can you be so rude to me?" She scolded.
"You're elegant?" Ah Si said against the pain which only made Zhuang jie twist his ear harder.
"That hurts!" Ah Si exclaimed as he held his ear when Zhuang Jie let it go.
"Little brat. Have I not hurt you enough?" Zhuang Jie asked.
"Huaze Lei will take care of Shancai. Isn't that great?" Ah Si said as he turned to look at Lei.
"Okay, Ah Si, and I need to board now. Goodbye now." Zhuang jie said as she held her passport and waved at us.
"Take care, Zhuang jie. Bye." I said as I waved back.
"Don't miss me." Meizuo teased.
"Safe flight," Ximen said as he waved.
"Ah Si, wait." Lei called out which made Ah Si look back at him.
"I have something to tell you." Lei said as he walked closer.
"What?" Ah Si said as Lei leaned in and whispered something to him.
"What are they talking about?" Ximen whispered to me and Meizuo.
"I don't know," I answered back, just as confused.
Ah Si and Zhuang jie left not long after. The boys headed for the airport cafe while I walked over to the gift shop when I noticed a familiar ad playing behind me on the plasma screen. Oh, God. It was mine and Meizuo's ad. I covered my face in embarrassment.
"I didn't know you were a model." A voice said from behind me and I whipped my head around to see who it was. I smiled. It was that guy I had bumped into the last time.
"Hey," I said as I smiled at him. He walked closer and offered me a smile.
"Hey. You looked really pretty in the commercial." He complimented as I blushed and thanked him. He turned his eyes back on the screen then back at me.
"Is that guy a model too?" He asked, referring to Meizuo.
"Not really. He's someone I know." I explained and he smiled.
"Boyfriend?" He guessed and I giggled.
"Well- um.."
"Shuijing." I turned my head around and saw the boys behind me. Meizuo was holding what looked like a mango frappuccino for me.
"Hey, guys." I smiled. Meizuo walked closer to me and the guy.
"Who's this?" He asked with a hint of irritation in his voice that I didn't know why he was.
"Oh um.. This is- I'm sorry I didn't catch your name last time." I said as I sheepishly apologized. He laughed slightly and gave me a smile. He was about to say something when I heard his friends yet again shouting at him to hurry up.
"I'll tell you next time." He mysteriously said as he winked at me before taking off.
"Wait! Why next time?" I called out which made him look back at me.
"So I can see you again. Goodbye for now, " He said, smiling at me as he ran.
I didn't even realize I was still smiling until Ximen poked my cheek.
"Looks like Shuijing has a little crush." He teased and I hit him on the shoulder.
"Oh shut up Ximen!" I said as I blushed even more.
"Oh please! He wasn't that good looking." Meizuo commented as he passed me my drink and we all walked to the exit.
"Well, I think he's kinda cute," I said as I drank my frappuccino.
"Whatever," Meizuo said as he drank his coffee.
"Jealous Meizuo?" Lei teased which made Meizuo choke on his coffee and me to look at him with wide eyes.
"Me? Jealous? Of that guy? Please." He said, trying to hide his blushing face.
"Meizuo, you don't have to worry. You're still my BFF." I teased which made him huff and walk faster than us. Ximen, Lei, and I laughed at his antics.

I had just dropped off Shuijing at her house and now I was home alone. I headed for my bedroom upstairs and plopped myself on my bed. My mind kept wandering about what Ximen had said. Why would I be jealous of that guy? Shuijing didn't even know his name.
But something about the way he looked at Shuijing made me feel uncomfortable. He was looking at her in awe and admiration. But then again, I couldn't blame him for admiring my best friend.
She was so beautiful. Her eyes twinkled so brightly even on the darkest of nights. Her laugh sounded just like the softest tinkling of bells and her smile. Oh her smile. It could make any man fall for her. Even me.
My eyes widened from what I just thought of. I slapped myself.
What was I thinking? She's my friend.
She's my best friend.
My best friend who was a girl.
My best girl friend.
My
I groaned and rubbed my face in frustration as I buried myself in my pillow.
What's wrong with me?
