《Hiraeth || F. Meizuo》Chapter 1

Tengtang Residence
"My head hurts so bad." I groaned as I rubbed my temples in frustration. It was a weekend and I was stuck at the house doing paperwork. Not that I wanted to do it but my dad called me the night before and said that he needed it done as soon as possible. And thank God I've finished all of it. I worked all night and haven't slept a wink.
"What does he think I am? A workaholic robot?" I sighed as I buried my face deep into what seemed like never-ending paperwork.
A knock on my bedroom door interrupted my thoughts. I lifted my head up from the sea of paper and fixed my hair a little.
"Who is it?" I called out.
"It's me Meimei. Can I come in?" A delicate voice answered from behind the door.
"Sure jiejie. It's open." I answered.
The door opens and my sister walks in with a gentle smile on her face. . One of the world's most beautiful women and in line to inherit the Tengtang Investment Group. She was wearing a white sleeveless flowy dress that reached just a little below her knees and white platform heels. Her hair was down and she carried a white Chanel clutch. A silver heart-shaped locket adorned her neck and a diamond plated watch was wrapped around her wrist.
"Are you busy?" She asked with a kind smile as she came closer to sit on the edge of my bed, careful not to touch any of the papers surrounding it.
"Dad wanted me to finish this as soon as possible. It took me all night to finish it and I still had to redo some of it this morning since some of the data on them were messed up but other than that, I'm done for the day jie." I answered as I looked around the number of papers that I finished reading and worked on the night before until early this morning.
"That's good. So I was wondering, if you're up for it and you're not too tired, we could have fun for the day? Let's just go have some lunch and walk around town? I just feel like Dad has been putting so much pressure on you and we haven't spent that much time together lately. I rarely see you even though we live in the same house and when we do see each other, you look so tired and sad. I just want to make sure you're okay. I miss you meimei." She said as she smiled sadly at me.
"Don't worry about it jiejie. I'm fine really. I missed you too. Now, why don't I just take a shower and change, and I'll just send these to dad and then we can go for some sisterly bonding? I'll meet you downstairs jie." I smiled at my sister and gave her a little hug. She nodded and left my room. I sighed and tidied up the papers on top of my bed.
"Yiyun! Yiyun!" I called out. Then the door opened to reveal the face of a handsome looking individual.
"Morning Princess. Whatcha need?" The person asked playfully.
Yiyun is my best friend/personal assistant and her family has been serving my family for centuries. And yes, you read that right. SHE. Sorry ladies but she's a woman. She's the closest thing I have to family except for Jing jiejie.

"Can you take these downstairs and make sure they're sent to Dad in Shanghai? They're all organized and I just need you to deliver them to the company." I said, pointing to the stacks of paper neatly placed on my bed.
"Sure. No problem Princess" she answered, ruffling my hair.
I glared at her and swatted her hand away. She raised both her hands up in surrender and proceeded to take the papers from my bed and headed out of my room. After she closed the door, I went into my bathroom to shower.
After taking a shower, I dried my hair and got changed. I wore a cream-colored long sleeve fitted top tucked into my blue high waisted trousers. I put on a pair of gold drop earrings, a few thin gold rings on my pinky finger and my thumb and slid on some blue stilettos. I curled my hair a little bit. I sprayed some perfume and took in the scent. Hmm. My favorite. Chanel No. 5. I grabbed my lip gloss and applied a little bit of peach-colored tint to my lips. I grabbed my phone, my black crossbody Burberry bag and headed downstairs where my sister was waiting for me.
"Ready?" she asked, smiling at me. I nodded and smiled back. We headed out and I decided to drive for us. We got into my white Maserati convertible which I got from Mom and Dad for my 18th birthday. We drove and parked near a cafe that was close to the Eiffel tower. It served the best cakes and desserts in Paris and it also had the best view being only a few steps from the tower itself. Jing and I got off from the car and proceeded to walk inside the cafe but we were stopped by a man who was selling flowers.
"Jamais de ma vie je n'ai vu de si belles dames. Quelle beauté!" (Never in my life have I seen such gorgeous ladies. Such beauty!) He exclaimed as he each gave us a kiss on the back of our hands. We giggled and thanked him. He then proceeded to take two roses from his cart and ran his hand through them to remove the thorns.
"Vous voilà. Deux roses pour deux femmes tout aussi belles." (Here you are. Two roses for two equally beautiful ladies.) He said as he handed the two flowers to us. I was about to take out my wallet and so was Jing to pay the man but he shook his head.
"Vos beaux sourires sont plus qu'assez de dames de paiement. Prends soin de toi!" (Your beautiful smiles are more than enough payment ladies. Take care!) He said as he waved goodbye and proceeded to walk away. I smelled the rose and smiled. "Sweet" I thought.
"That was really sweet of him, don't you think meimei?" Jie asked, a teasing smile on her face. I hummed in approval and placed the flower on the table. We sat down and ordered some food and drinks. Jing ordered some tea whilst I ordered a strawberry milkshake and a blueberry cheesecake. We caught up with each other despite living together for the past few years. I talked about how much paperwork Dad was giving me recently while Jie talked about Mom's recent obsession with changing jiejie's diet. We were having so much fun that we didn't notice the sun was almost setting. We stared at it and admired just how perfectly it blended with the slightly blushed tone that the sky had. I smiled and Jiejie smiled as well.

"Are you excited Meimei?" She asked happily. I stared at her. Excited for what? Did I miss something?
"What do you mean Jiejie? Excited for what?" I asked her confused. She laughed. What was so funny? What did I forget?
"We're going back to Shanghai tomorrow remember?" she answered. Oh yeah! I forgot about that!
"Oh yeah! I forgot Jiejie! I was wondering why some of my stuff were already packed in suitcases. That's why". I laughed and shook my head.
"So are you excited to see the boys again? I've heard a lot of interesting stories about them for the past 3 years." My sister asked, with a hint of mischief in her voice.
My mind wandered to the 4 boys in Shanghai who were our best friends since childhood. The notorious . Daoming Si, Huaze Lei, Yan Ximen & Feng Meizuo . I'm not really sure how they've changed and I don't really believe the reputation they've attained because I've seen them in the most ridiculous of clothing and their most embarrassing moments. It's hard to imagine the heirs of Asia's most prominent companies wearing open crotch pants, isn't it? Well, you can imagine it now.
"I wonder how they are. I haven't talked to them in a year except for Ah Si. He's keeps pestering me to come home. Apparently, some girl has caught his attention which makes me more excited to see them again." I admitted. I suddenly felt lonely that I haven't talked to my other 3 best friends in a while and I was really looking forward to seeing them.
"You're excited to see them or someone specific?" my sister added teasingly. I blushed and proceeded to sip the rest of my milkshake. "Hey, Meimei why are you blushing?" she added.
"I'm not!" I answered shyly and she just laughed and pinched my cheek. I pouted but then I remembered something. My lips curled into a mischievous smile.
"What's with the smile meimei?" She asked curiously.
"Oh nothing Jie." I answered, my smile still intact. Jiejie just smiled softly and drank her tea.
"I wonder how Lei is doing." Jie choked on her tea and hurriedly grabbed the napkin on her right side to wipe her mouth. I laughed out loud at my sister's initial shock over what I said.
"Mei mei!" she exclaimed, a blush prevalent on her cheeks.
"What? Did I say something wrong Jie?" I said, my laughter slowly dying down.
"Ahem. Well no meimei." she asked curiously.
"Jie, we both he's in love with you. You're the only girl in his eyes." I answered sincerely.
"I know that Meimei. But I'm not planning on entering a relationship anytime soon."
"Jie, when we go back to Shanghai, he'll ask you to be his girlfriend. You know that don't you?" I asked her. Curious as to why she was trying to ignore what she knew what was about to come.
"Yes. I know he will. But I won't say yes." she smilled sadly. I stared at her in disbelief.
"What do you mean you won't say yes? You love him too don't you?" I said, my voice cracking. My eyes were now slightly tearing up at the thought of my sister denying herself of the happiness she deserves.
"Of course I do. I always have. But-"
"But why? Jie, why can't you just take a chance? Do you know how lucky you are to have the person you're in love with feel the same way about you? Not that many people can say that Jie. Do you know how it feels to be hopelessly in love with someone? Do you know how difficult it is to deny those feelings in order to make yourself realize that the idea of you and that person will never happen?" I exclaimed, the tears from my eyes falling freely. My sister stared at me in shock. I never cry and I most certainly have never cried in front of her but it was too much.
"I thought you moved on from him. I thought you said it was just a crush meimei." She said, pulling me in a side hug as she rubbed my arms to comfort me.
"I thought so too. But then again, I never stopped thinking about him. I miss him so much. I wanna see him. I wanna hug him and maybe, just maybe I want to hear him say that he loves me too even if it's a lie." I cried out as more tears fell from my eyes and I hugged my sister tighter as she continued to rub my arms and utter comforting words.
"I'm sorry meimei. I wish I could do something to take the pain away." She said sadly.
I continued to cry on her shoulder and my heart ached even more when my mind started to drift off.
"Are you sure you can go back?" she asked, unsure.
"I-I don't know jie. I'll think about it later." I answered, my voice still weak.
"All right. I'll understand if you can't yet but just make sure you're there by my birthday okay meimei?" she added, giving me a small smile.
"Yes jiejie. I promise." I said, smiling back.
Suddenly. a memory flashed in my head which reminded me who was responsible for both the beating and breaking of my heart.
"Hey, Zuo! When we're old enough, let's promise that we'll get married okay?" a 5-year-old Shuijing asked a 6-year-old Meizuo who smiled and nodded at her.
"Yeah! Let's do that Shui!" He answered happily.
.......
"Hey Shui, remember that promise we made when we were 5 and 6 years old?" A 17-year-old Meizuo asked a 16-year-old Shuijing. Her eyes shone at the memory he mentioned.
"Yeah, I do... Why? " Shuijing blushed. Was this it? Was he gonna tell her that he loved her too?
"That was so stupid, right? Like what were we thinking?" Meizuo answered with a laugh and Shuijing bit her cheek in silence. Her heart broke but she laughed it off like it was nothing.
"Yeah yeah! So stupid!" she answered but in her mind, she said, "I'm so stupid!"
He was my first love.
I've been in love with him since I was 7.
He doesn't know that and he never will.
Why?
Because he's my .
