Something was wrong.
Something had to be wrong. The applicator must have been faulty. Even if I was infected, there was no way I could be at stage three.
Still, was I infected? I'd hoped to set my mind at ease by seeing once and for all that I wasn't. But the circle labeled "TGV negative" definitely had not turned blue. Now I was even more uncertain than I was before.
I put the Insta-Read back in its wrapper and slipped it into my pocket.
Chris had already gotten all of the refugees onto their horses and made them put their blindfolds on. Everyone was already waiting for me.
I pulled myself onto the saddle behind Chris. My heart was pounding.
When we started moving up the trail, I reached around Chris and handed him the applicator.
"I don't understand," I said. "It's broken, right?"
Chris took the Insta-Read. He read it.
For a moment he said nothing. Then he shook his head and sighed.
"I was afraid of something like this," he whispered. "I didn't expect stage three, but I was afraid of this. Oh my God, Ashley. . . I'm so sorry."
"What do you mean?" I whispered back. "Something's wrong with it. Something has to be wrong with it. Even if I was infected, there's no way I could be stage three. It's broken. It has to be. Right?"
"These don't break," Chris said. He was being so uncharacteristically patient with me, it was frightening. "It doesn't work like that," he explained. "These applicators test for a protein that's unique to the TGV pathogen. It's physically impossible for the blue lines to appear without the presence of that protein."
"You're wrong," I insisted. I couldn't believe how certain Chris seemed when I was so obviously not anywhere near the state of a stage-three positive. "Chris," I said. "I never died! Don't you think I'd remember something like that? Dying? I never even got sick! How could I be stage three if I'm still alive?"
"Are you sure about that?"
"Am I sure about not having died? Yes, I'm pretty sure about that."
"Seriously, Ashley. Are you sure?"

Mud's Mission
The story begins with an elderly hermit mage living on the outskirts of a labyrinth town. Invoking spellwork that is trivial for a mage of his caliber, he creates a simple mud automaton to aid him in household chores. However, in the middle of his efforts, something goes wrong; his ancient heart finally fails. Now, half complete and with limited understanding of the world, an artificial being of mud stirs. Despite its limitations, it has a mission to fulfill. The last instructions of a dying creator. "Defend my home, and my possessions." To the mechanical mind of Mud, only absolute perfection is acceptable when fulfilling the orders of The Master. Mud will make sure nothing in the universe will ever threaten The Master's home! --- This fiction contains RPG elements such as skills and levels. The protagonist has an inhuman mind and acts on instincts and preferences that are completely different from those of a normal human, and may at times fly in the face of common sense. The general tone is lighthearted, but there are some scenes with disturbing content such as mind control and references to torture. Join our Discord to discuss the novel or chat with the author.

Joshua Hall is an intelligent and promising college sophomore. But when he accidentally witnesses Sara Wilder, a new and quirky acquaintance, receive an eldritch mark of possibility from her mother, everything changes. Josh can now see marks, eldritch symbols of power brought from another plane of existence that empower the weak and the futureless, that are invisible to most. But that's not the only thing that he's seeing, as strange dreams haunt Josh's sleep and threaten to destroy his sanity. With his mind and body struggling to handle the impossible things he can now perceive, Josh has to decide: accept a mark himself, or attempt to forget everything. This is a bit of an experimental project for me, as it isn't my norm in genre or topic. Expect: -Slow build storytelling -Character details -Foreshadowing -Dialogue driven narrative -Dynamic action scenes -Some mild graphic descriptions of injury -Sexuality is a factor -No explicit content (at least not directly) -Mild body horror -Light cosmic horror Reviews and critique are highly encouraged.
