《Gallinus》23- A great talent

We are surrounded.
On one side is a man dressed roughly, carrying a sword.
He looks very strong…
On the other is a huge snake with a boy pouring water on it with his finger, like a hose.
… For some reason, I feel this scene can easily be misinterpreted.
Anyway, there is no escape for us, so I can only bet everything on the girl who carries me on her shoulder…
We are lost…
- Galizé… Watch the boy. – She tells me with a serious look.
Despite my lack of confidence, Suzy held her spear tightly and started running towards the Viking.
She, probably, knows that she won’t be able to get trough the other side, as the snake takes up a lot of space. So, Suzy decides to try her luck and pass by the Viking, who had only his sword.
Holding the spear forward, Suzy tries to take advantage of the length of her weapon to attack with a stab, but that was a mistake.
The Viking don’t even try to deflect, he just let the spear hit his clothes, then grab it and break it in half.
… Suzy, the snake will spit something!
As soon as she heard, Suzy lowers the rest of the spear that was left in her hand and try to jump over the Viking using the weapon as if it were a jumping stick but ended up being hit by his sword in the middle of the jump.
If it weren’t for her using her fist against the blade, it is very likely that Suzy would receive a fatal wound.
Well, with the impact of the sword, we are both thrown against the wall while the Viking… Was thrown down the corridor by a jet of water. The power was so strong that he was buried inside the wall.
… Hey, are you okay?
- How did you not fall? – She asks me, getting up.
My claws are stuck in your clothes, so the only way for me to fall is for you to undress…
- …Did you ruin my clothes with your claws!?
It looks like you’re fine, so let’s get out of here soon!
Even if I say Suzy is fine, I can see that she has some fractures, especially in her left arm, which received most of the impact.
Her hand just hasn’t been cut, because Suzy is wearing brass knuckles.
As soon as the girl ran again, the snake started to chase us.
How can this snake move so fast!?
She was almost reaching us when, at the end of the corridor, a fierce roar came from the wreckage of the wall.
The Viking, with blood in his eyes, which I don’t know if it was because of his wounds or inner fury, comes out of the hole and hits his hand on the wall.
As soon as he pulls it out, a big ax comes with it. It is a rough ax, badly made, but extremely robust.

This guy… He creates an ax!?
In his other hand, he held the other half of the spear, which, as a halberd, has an ax blade on its side.
- … I wanted I had that part. – Suzy comments, before turning around and throwing the broken part of the spear backwards.
It was such a sudden turn, that she barely managed to keep her balance and just didn’t fall to the ground, because she held on to the wall.
Her intention was to hit the boy on top of the snake, who was distracted by the Viking’s roar.
The spear hit him right in the forehead, making him fall off the snake. Because of his master being hit, the snake stops coming after us to see if he is okay, but…
It is so big that It cannot turn around.
… That was kind of anticlimactic.
- I didn’t think it was so easy to defeat him… - Suzy murmurs, watching the scene of the snake trying to turn around with huge difficulty.
Well, with him out, we just need to take care of the barbarian running towards us.
- Yes…
As soon as Suzy notices the Viking, she quickly takes a sword from her bag and goes toward him.
When the barbarian saw the girl next to him, he quickly spun his ax hard.
Suzy uses her sword to change the ax’s trajectory, since she can’t compete in strength, and as she is close to the wall, the ax curl around her for a short time.
But that was the best opportunity for Suzy, who took the opportunity to pass by the Viking and reach the end of the corridor.
The barbarian doesn’t try to chase us, but he keeps running forward and attacks the snake directly with all his strength.
It is possible to feel the tremor on the floor of the impact.
Now I understand why you want to cultivate so much… That strength doesn’t make sense!
- Luckily, he didn’t attack me with all his strength, as he might end up slipping. – Suzy comments, since both were running at the time of the confrontation.
At that moment the snake, which suffered the attack of the Viking and ended up having a big cut on its body, use its head to press him on the wall.
Basically, it became a competition of strength.
Taking advantage that the two are distracted, Suzy and I observe the two entrances at the end of the corridor.
- Right or left?
… I’ve always chosen the right.
- Then let’s go left!
We have a lot to talk about later… By the way, where’s my stick?
- Why do you want that!?
Give it to me!
As soon as she hands me my stick, which has become my main weapon, I look at the floor of the path Suzy chose.
… Brown color?
- What is it?

Nothing…
Perhaps, because we lost so much time talking, as soon as we saw the battle again, the boy had returned to the serpent’s head.
His face is red, probably very angry with us.
In addition, the Viking was thrown again to the end of the corridor, that is, he is on our side.
… Run!
Without the slightest hesitation, Suzy ran to the side she chose, while the other two started chasing us.
And, further on… There was no passage.
- What we do!
That’s what happens when you don’t trust me… In any case, stay against the left wall and turn to them.
Without questioning me, the girl does exactly what I ask.
Seeing them getting closer and closer, I made a mental smile.
Now, you will see the power of my stick! Jump back!
As soon as I say that I hit the stick on the wall. As if it were a hidden button, the stick went deeper into it.
When Suzy jumped back, something happened to the floor. From it, several stone spears went up and pierced everything in front of us.
Both the serpent and the Viking were impaled by the spears.
… This is more deadly than I predicted.
- Just what do you do!?
I wasn’t sure it would work, but I used one of the traps in this place to our advantage.
When we arrive in this place, I didn’t notice light brown threads in some points of this maze. Only when I saw the brown color on the floor was when I realized that it was possible to see their way to activation location.
Still, it is very difficult to see…
It is very likely this is the case, so no one takes advantage of this mechanism.
Anyway, thanks to that, we are still alive… But also imprisoned.
- Should we try to cross these spears?
Let’s take a look at the place first… What is this?
While talking to Suzy, a dense vapor covers the place. A few seconds later, this vapor condense and cover the girl’s feet with water.
After our vision return to normal, we heard a voice from the direction of the spears.
- I didn’t expect there to be a trap like this around here…
It is the boy from before, who is traveling with the giant serpent. He’s in the middle of the spears, but he hasn’t received any injuries.
As I watched the boy, a roar came and several of the spears were destroyed. From the destruction site, it was possible to see the bloody barbarian, but still standing.
Both are alive…
Seeing the two, Suzy tightened her fists and stepped back a little.
One lost his animal while the other is well finished… Can you defeat them?
- A three-sided fight is not something I understand very well how it works, since it is not possible to know who is going to attack whom… - Suzy mumbles to me. – Besides, I don’t know the boy’s strength.
Another important point is, besides them, Suzy is also hurt.
… Do you want me to use my stick again?
- This trap has almost caught me! How can you be sure that I will be able to react faster than the next one!?
A good point…
As everyone prepare for the confrontation, a strong wind blew through the room and a voice reverberate.
- Stop this fight.
In the next moment, floating among us, was a girl. Her presence made the air freeze, mainly because of her fierce look.
- … Hehehe, finally an opponent! – Says the boy while putting his hand in the water.
When he pulled it out the water was swirling around his hand, like a disc.
Without speaking another word, he threw the disc at the girl who was still flying.
While this attack takes place, the Viking also holds his ax firmly and attack with all his strength while jumping.
- Watch out! – Suzy exclaims.
I feel in a cliché scene…
Before both blows could hit her, a wall of wind protects her from both attacks and, taking advantage of the moment, she hit the Viking with her sword.
The attack didn’t seem to have much strength at first, but the crash that occurred after he hit the ground indicated the enormous power contained in the blow.
Without wasting another second, as if there were a platform in the air, she picked up momentum and sprinted in the direction of the boy who, unable to react, was thrown on the wall and lost consciousness.
Finally, there were only the three of us still conscious.
- T-thanks for saving me. – Suzy thanks humbly
- Saving? Why did you need to be saved? – The girl asks.
… Hã? Didn’t she realize she was saving you?
Suzy also don’t understand for a moment, before thanking her again.
- As you can see, I was trapped and, if it weren’t for you, it would be difficult to escape…
- Why were you trying to escape? Don’t tell me… Did you do something for those two!?
- Eh?
- So that was it! I was thinking it was just a normal battle, so I decided to stop it so no one would get hurt but…
- Wait, listen to what I have -
- I never thought I helped a criminal.
… Just what’s going on?
The girl looks directly into Suzy’s eyes.
- No, that’s not what I – Suzy tries to explain, but it’s in vain.
A sword is pointed to Suzy.
- Now tell me, what did you do.
Girl, you really have a great talent for making enemies…
- What did I do!?

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
