《Meteor High》Chapter 4: Awakening

Victor, Daman, and Rick lay unconscious in the middle of the ruined field. A cold air rolled across their bodies, as Victor started to stir. He tried opening his eyes only to stop due to the tremendous amount of pain the action caused.
What the fuck happened?
Victor started to think, but the sound of footsteps reached his ears, causing him to tense up. The footsteps seemed to be getting closer, as Victor tried to will his body to move.
Finally, when the steps were inches away from him he jerked up off the ground and in a quick motion punched out with his fist.
When his fist connected with something, a loud thump sounded as his attacker fell.
“Oww…dude, what the fuck?!” A familiar voice said.
It was Drake.
"My bad man, can't see right now and today has been weird as shit."
Drake lifted himself off the ground and moved towards VIctor, checking him over.
"You alright? I saw that huge explosion."
Victor waved off his friend's hands.
" Yeah..I think I'm good. My eyes just-"
Victor was cut off as he sensed a huge amount of energy entering his body. He felt it swirl around his body before settling tightly in his core. At the same time, the pain in his eyes started to quell too, so he slowly cracked them. The light from the sun was so blinding as it hit his eyes and he immediately shut them again.
When his eyes got used to the light he carefully opened them again before noticing something had changed. Everything looked more…clearer than it did before.
But that wasn’t the weirdest part. Maybe Victor was imagining this but it looked like Drake had a…faint blue glow surrounding his entire body.
He rubbed his eyes but the faint glow wouldn't go away.

“What?” Drake asked, holding his nose where there was a little blood dripping out.
“Ah…nothing, sorry again for that,” Victor said, gesturing towards his nose.
Drake just shook his head and chuckled.
"It's all good man, just as long as we get out of here in one piece."
Victor patted his friend on the should before stretching out his body and hearing all his muscles let out a Symphony of cracks. Victor reached down felt that his body was a lot leaner than it was before, while he couldn't be called fat before he was never one to hit the gym regularly.
“It just feels like something’s…different about me.”He stated.
“Yeah, I know what you mean. I can see and smell a lot better than I could before.” Drake said looking down at his hands
" And I fell a lot stronger too."
“Well …I guess this isn’t the weirdest thing that has happened today.”
Victor looked around to see if anything else has changed. He looked over at the school…or what was left.
One-half of the building was destroyed. The other half was still coming down.
The field they were standing in was now bare, Rick and Daman lay not too far away, but the hundreds of colorful orbs were now gone. As if they were never there, to begin with.
Victor turned to face Drake.
“Did everybody make it out ok?”
“I don’t know.” He replied.
“I tried to help when I could, but I was too focused on getting out of there myself.”.
As he said that Victor could see people lingering around the front courtyard. Moving closer he stopped when he noticed a pair of hands sticking out and waving frantically underneath a pile of rubble.
He ran over to see if he could help and as he got closer, he could see that a few kids were pinned under a large crumbled wall.

"Please help!! We don't want to die!!" One of the students screamed.
Victor reached down to see if he could lift it and Drake ran over to help.
They got the wall up but the people that were under it looked pretty beat up. There were three of them, but Victor only recognized one.
“Emma!” He bent down and checked to see if she was still breathing.
“Is she ok?” Drake asked moving up beside him.
Victor placed his hands on her neck and felt a faint but steady heartbeat.
“Her pulse seems okay and she’s still breathing. But I'm not a doctor. ” Victor sated a little relief flooding his voice.
“Check on the other two, I’m going to see if there's anyone who can help them,” he said, turning around and was about to run off when a loud growl sounded from the front of the school followed by a high pitched scream.
...........
(Victor POV)
As the scream died down, Drake and I tore off in the direction it came from. We neared the front of the school we noticed that the roman statue that sat there was covered in what looked like blood.
“Where did this blood come from?” Drake asked.
“I don’t know, but we better see if anyone is seriously hurt.”
We ran over to the statue but slowed down once we saw what was under it. Sitting under the statue in a pool of blood was Alessia. She sat there with a fearful look on her face.
“Alessia!!” We ran over to see if she was ok.
“What happened? Are you ok?” Drake asked.
“It…it killed her.” She pointed her finger over to a pile of rubble that was a foot away from the statue. I ran over to the rubble but stopped when I saw what was lying there.
Sitting in the middle of all the wreckage was the body of a girl. There were claws and teeth marks all over her. And one of her arms was completely torn off.
“Oh…oh my god. What happened to her?” I said covering my eyes away from the lifeless body in front of me.
“We were running out of the building when something came up from behind us and started to claw at her. Once it was done with her it started to attack me and the next thing I know, I’m sitting under this statue covered in blood.” Alessia mumbled.
She tried to cover up the fear that was hiding in her voice, but Drake and I could tell she was scared out of her mind.
“Are you ok? Did you get hurt anywhere?” Drake asked.
“I’m fine, it..it's not my blood.” She said.
He looked her over anyway to see if she was hurt anywhere.
“We should probably get going before that thing comes back,” I said.
We helped Alessia to her feet and started for the back of the school but before we could go anywhere, a loud growl- much like the one we heard before- sounded from behind us.
We turned around to see the most hideous creature any of us has ever seen.

Rooms of the Desolate
Rooms of the Desolate is a collection of short stories designed to guide the reader through the many rooms and mysteries of the bleak and greyscale labyrinth of the Desolate. The first entry, "The Forever Tower" follows an unnamed wanderer climbing an endless, colourless tower; the only world they have ever known. As they slowly ascend alongside the masses, they consider the nature of their world and look to the corridors as temptation beckons. The second entry, "Production Line", follows an engineer in a boundless factory, who encounters a product that does not wish to bow to the overseers and makes them question their belief in the truth and duties they were made to believe. Content guidelines: Current entries do not include explicit profanity, but future entries may do so, hence the presence of that tag. Some entries do include gore and violence, though not currently to particularly extreme degrees. The Desolate is exactly that: a desolate world; as such, it is bleak, downtrodden, and may deal with mental struggles. Cover art credit: Adam Borkowski on Pexels.
