《It's Hard to be a Hero in a Parallel World》1.7 Underleveled and Face to Face with a Demon

Part 1
The large group of us adventurers and knights entered the Magic Mines.
Now that we were more than double the original number of party members, we decided to split into groups.
Who decided these numbers!
One half of the knights went with the muscle heads.
The other half of the knights went with the cute girls.
Heroine-chan, and Adventurer-chan, and I went with the competent pair of adventurers.
There’s only 5 people in my group, and one of them is only level two!
I was holding Adventurer-chan by her clothes.
Anytime we saw a monster, I just stayed close so I wouldn’t get hurt.
She seemed to get a bit annoyed.
“Hey Hero-kun! I get we are party members, but you’re way to close. Give me some room.”
“No! I’m the lowest level here! I told you the other day, It wasn’t possible for me to get strong enough to enter this dungeon in such a short amount of time. If we see any monsters that are too strong, I plan to use you as a human shield while I run away.”
“Huh? You know how strong my magic is. Of course there are no monsters in here that are too strong. Even if the demon shows up, I’ll kick it’s ass!”
“Don’t say that! It sounds like you're looking for trouble!”
We continued deeper into the mines, searching for the miners and clearing out monsters.
Adventurer-chan and Heroine-chan were doing well, as expected, but the two other adventurers were also holding their own.
Warrior-kun, a blonde warrior-class adventurer wielding a shortsword, and his partner; Mage-chan, the red-haired mage who wielded ice magic.
They were only adventuring party that came with me that didn’t seem like a bunch of total idiots.
I spoke to Warrior-kun.
“Hey Warrior-kun you guys are pretty strong. I’m glad you ended up coming.”
“Uh… of course Hero-kun. We could never abandon people in need.”
“Wow! How nice of you.”
Strong with a good heart…
This gives me an idea.
“You know Warrior-kun, there’s an opening for the job of hero right now. If you want it, I wouldn’t mind giving it to you.”
“Eh… no thanks.”
“No really you’re like perfect hero material.”
“No no no. The demons are too scary. Even this quest is a bit more difficult than I would like.”
Hmm.
Even for cool guys like this, the responsibilities of being a hero are just too much.
I guess it’s to be expected though.
Being the hero does seem like a lot of work.
Adventurer-chan started laughing.
“Pfft. You were being so cool Warrior-kun. Then you acted like a big scaredy-cat. Hahaha! Hey Hero-kun, don’t bother with these guys. They’re barely even stronger than you are. They always cause trouble on their quests too so they have even more debt than us. Hahaha.”
Warrior-kun started yelling back at her.
“Hey no one asked you dumbass.”
Mage-chan also started laughing at her partner.
“Pfft. How unlucky Warrior-kun. For once you were almost cool and then you let Adventurer-chan expose you so easily. Hahaha!”
“Hey! I don’t want to hear anything from you either! You’re the one who keeps racking up all the debt! On our last quest when we saved that farm from the swarm of giant beetles, you ended up freezing half of the crops along with the monsters you idiot!”
“Stop calling me an idiot! You know that my ice magic is super strong. You wanna go right now! I’ll remind you of what I can do!”
Looking at these two gives me a weird sense of deja-vu?
Warrior-kun turned to me.
“And you! Why the hell are you asking someone to do something like being the hero? That’s way too much to ask someone you just met! You of all people should know how scary the demons are! Who in their right mind would accept that!”
“Huh? Don’t get mad at me. It’s not my fault you’re all idiots!”
Why is everyone arguing?
Have they forgotten that we’re in a dangerous dungeon right now?
Were all the adventurers in “Light World” all this weird?
I wouldn’t know.
Heroine-chan looked back at us yelling at each other.
She didn’t look happy.
All I could do was just shrug back at her.
We all heard a ringing sound coming from Heroine-chan.
Heroine-chan raised her arm to her face and started talking to one of the knights on a magic bracelet.
“Yes, what is it?”
“We have made contact with the trapped miners.”
“Good. Are they all safe?”
“Yes captain! None of them have sustained any major injuries… and captain.”
“What is it.”
“The last miner we found confirmed it. There is a demon in the depths of the mine.”
At that moment, a loud noise came from deeper in the cave.
It was straight ahead!
“Very well. Evacuate them as fast as possible. My group will continue forward.”
“Yes. Captain!”
How unlucky.
Of course we end up the last ones in the mine when the demon is revealed.
Just me and all these idiots vs this OP villain.
“Let’s go.”
“Yeah!” x2
“... yeah.” x2
Part 2
We hurried towards the lower level to confront the demon.
The girls seemed confident.
Meanwhile, Warrior-kun and I were about to cry.
“Psst. Hey Hero-kun what are we gonna do? We can’t fight a demon.”
“I know, I know. Just lay low when we encounter it. The girls might be able to deal some damage but when it gets tired of them, it’ll begin to power up. We’ll use that opportunity to grab everyone and make a run for it.”
“Oof” x2
We ran into the backs of Adventurer-chan and Mage-chan.
Heroine-chan had stopped the group.
We were face to face with the demon.
She was a beautiful woman dressed in black with horns coming out of her head.
“Demon! My name is Heroine-chan, we have come to defeat you!”
“Oh! You puny adventurer’s have come to defeat me. Hahaha! I would love to see you try!”
“Why have you come to these mines?”
“Well, It matters not if you learn why. None of you will make it out of here alive. I have occupied this mine under direct order of the 4 demon generals! Beneath this room, there is a large mass of magic crystals. I am here to take them in order to power up our monster underlings.”
That sounds about right.
The magic crystals down there increase one’s magical strength in the game.
“Now then, in the name of the demon king, I shall-”
“WATER! FREEZE! LIGHTNING!”
“Aaaah!”
The three girls shot their magic directly at the demon’s face.
She looked pissed after that hit.
“Hey what the hell are you three doing! I was in the middle of my speech! You ruined my cool moment!”
Huh?
Is this demon an idiot?
Adventurer-chan started cackling.
“Haha! You’re mistaken if you think you can take us on! Come we will give you a quick death”
“Grrr. How dare you ruin my cool line and then continue to say a cool line yourself!”

Sorry miss demon.
Ruining cool moments is actually one of these girls’ specialties.
“Damn I practiced my speech for hours waiting for adventurers to show up. My one chanced was ruined.”
“Wait you practiced that for hours. Pffft. Not even my idiot kouhai would fail that hard after practicing. Hahaha!”
Hey, don’t throw me under the bus you idiot!
Anyways, what the hell is with everyone in this world.
Even the demons are weird.
Maybe they aren’t that scary after all!
“That’s it you pissed me off. I was planning on surprising you after I toyed with you for a bit, but forget it! I’m doing it now. Ha!”
An intense dark aura was unleashed and surrounded the demon.
HOLY SHIT!
I was wrong.
That is terrifying!
All of us aside from Heroine-chan were blown back.
The force of the aura felt so heavy on my skin.
She’s going into her second phase just like in the game.
I got up and screamed back at my group.
“Everyone run! We have to get out of here before she finishes powering up!”
“We’re already on it!” x2
Warrior-kun and Mage-chan were already running as fast as they could.
Now it’s time to follow suit.
Adventurer-chan and I were ready to go but Heroine-chan was frozen in place.
I turned to her and yelled.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“I’m… I’m… I’m gonna defeat the demon!”
“Are you crazy! Look at that! We have to get out of here!”
“No! The world needs it’s hero! I’ll show you! We can beat the demons!”
Damn this girl is too stubborn!
Still, I’m not completely heartless.
“Adventurer-chan cast speed on me!”
“Ah you’re right! You’re really weak so you need the speed to keep up!”
“Hey! Just cast it already!”
“Alright! SPEED!”
With the speed buff, I drew my sword and zoomed up to to Heroine-chan!
She smiled in relief.
“So you have decided to fight. I always knew you were a true Hero. Come let us-”
BONK!
I hit her in the head with the back of my sword and she fell to the ground.
Adventurer-chan started screaming.
“What the hell are you doing! Do you hate being the hero so bad that you’ve switched sides to fight for the demons!”
“Shut up! She wouldn’t have come if I didn’t knock her out! Now let’s get out of here while we still have time!”
“EARTH!”
“Eh!” x2
Rocks fell from the ceiling and blocked the exit.
“Hahaha! You fools should have run while you had the chance! It’s too bad! I like to chase my prey. Hahaha!”
Aaaaah!
She finished her transformation and now we’re trapped!
We’re dead!
Part 3
“Waaah! Hero-kun, what are we gonna do!”
“I don’t know! Crap crap crap!”
“EARTH!”
“Aaaah!” x2
Adventurer-chan and I were running around the room jumping out of the way of her earth magic.
Crap this is really bad!
She looks terrifying and her power went through the roof.
There’s no escape route and I can barely dodge her attacks while carrying Heroine-chan.
“Haha! Keep running you puny adventurers! Earth!”
“Aaaah!” x2
We have no other options.
If we want to live, we’re gonna have to beat the demon.
God dammit, why me!
First things first.
We need Heroine-chan if we want to stand a chance.
“Adventurer-chan! Do you have any more healing potions!”
“I have one left!”
“Good. Get over here and use it on Heroine-chan. We need her to wake up!”
I set Heroine-chan down onto the floor.
“I’ll keep the demon busy!”
The demon started chuckling.
“Oh a weakling like you is going to keep me busy? How hilarious!”
“She’s right Hero-kun! You couldn’t kill any of the monsters in the mine. You’re still level 2!”
“Exactly! So hurry up and heal Heroine-chan! I can give you maybe a good minute if I’m lucky!”
“Uh… Right!”
Adventurer-chan started running over to Heroine-chan.
I drew my sword and made my way towards the demon.
“Are you sure you want to fight me kid. You’re partner said you were only level two. You don’t want to leave this to her and her magic? I’m weak to the water element you know.”
“You can’t trick me demon. I know your resistant to magic now that you transformed.”
“Your able to tell huh. Hahaha! How amusing. I guess I’ll take you on first. When that other girl wakes up, she’ll see her comrade’s body on the floor. EARTH!”
I jumped out of the way.
The demon was so fast.
She was already prepared to meet me in the spot I jumped to.
“Ha!”
The demon shook the whole room with a single punch.
I kept distance my distance as she was charging at me.
I have to make sure I don’t get hit by any of these attacks.
One hit and I’m down for good.
I don't know how long I can last though.
“Hey hurry it up already. Why isn’t she awake yet!”
“I’m trying! Cmon Heroine-chan! Wake up!”
Slap, slap, slap
“Hey hey don’t get distracted kid. Look away and you might die! I don’t want my fun to end that quickly. EARTH!”
I dodged just in the nick of time.
This time, the spell of hers knocked so much debris in the air.
Finally it’s my turn.
“Ha!”
I snuck up behind her and swung my sword as hard as I could.
Clank!
“Huh?”
What the hell!
My sword broke in half on the demon's skin.
She’s supposed to be weaker to physical attacks now, but she’s still this strong!
Why is she so OP!
Oh crap!
“Ha!”
The demon turned around and punched at the ground again.
Again, the shockwave resonated around the room.
I was sent flying across the floor.
Adventurer-chan screamed.
“Hero-kun!”
I was sitting up against the wall and the demon was staring me down.
“Hahaha! Come on kid. Don’t tell me you’re out of gas now.”
My speed buff has finally ran out.
I can’t keep up with her anymore.
“Prepare yourself. I’ll crush you under my feet. Hahaha!”
The demon started stomping on the ground to taunt me.
When she did that, cracks spread across the floor.
“Huh?” x3
Oh my god.
Her punches were too strong!
The demon looked confused.
“What’s going on?”
She tried moving but more cracks formed with every step.
Crap what do we do.
Below us is where all the magic crystals are.
It’s insanely far down and full of all those hard rocks!
Any sudden moves and we’ll fall to our deaths.
“Hey you stupid demon stop moving! You’re too heavy! The floor is gonna fall through!”
“What! Don’t call a lady heavy, you monster!”
“Monster? Have you seen yourself!”
“How dare you! I may be a demon but you are truly evil!”
“Hey! What did I just say! Stop moving!”
We were stuck at a stand still.
I heard a noise coming from Adventurer-chan’s direction.
Heroine-chan finally woke up.
“Ugh… What’s going on?”
“Hey Heroine-chan! Don’t move!”
“What do you mean?”
She looked at me confused.
Then she locked eyes with the demon!
Her face when she saw the demon was even more angry than at the guild.
She lifted up her hand.
“Hey what the hell are you doing you idiot!”
“LIGHTNING!”
It was the strongest magic blast I had ever seen.
The spell destroyed the ground on impact.
“Aaaaah” x4

Trailblazer
The story of a man who accidentally wrote another world into existence. Everyone breaks away from their mundane daily life in one way or another. Our protagonist, an unfortunate consequence of circumstance, being no different, often escaped the harsh reality of life by writing stories of an alternate world of swords and magic. Though he recognized the difference between reality and fantasy, he could've never imagined what would happen, when the line between the two blurred as lightning struck down from the skies, and his escapism fantasy became all too real... After he came to, he would soon learn that things in the other world aren't quite as he remembered them to be. The world he wrote of had become but a shadow of its former self. Albeit hesitant at first, he sets off on a quest to find out the secrets behind the Trails, yet even then, he can't help but wonder... Can he really bring his world back to its old glory? —————————— I have never written a story before in my life and now I'm doing so in a language I don't natively speak. Groundbreaking quality is probably not something to be expected, but I do my best to keep things readable. With the necessities out of the way, both constructive criticism and other suggestions are very much welcome, and I'll do my best to take them into account when writing future chapters.

The cover is commisioned and done by: Artist: FatCatInTheBox ***** Before you lot bashes me up with my English etc., consider this: 1. This is my first novel. First conceptualized and written some 23 years ago. Only until last year that I did some improvisations and improvements to what I had kept in the dusty corner of my room all these while. This story sees the light of the day because I challenged myself, that's all. 2. English is the 6th language that I speak. And in RRL, I'm using British English mostly to write my story. 3. Easier said than done. Rather than subjecting me to subjective comments/reviews about the language, point it out and suggest an alternative. One or two would do just fine. It goes a long way. After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
