《The Otherworldly Treasure Hunt》Chapter 2 - A Stormy Encounter

Maybe I should have fell asleep with a coat on
He thought as he stepped on a particularly wet patch of mud causing some rainwater to seep into the building puddle at the bottom of his shoes.
with wellingtons as well
Vic was currently trudging through the midst of a rainstorm. He was not very happy.
While the appearance of that screen was surprising, it pretty much only told him things he already knew…
That refill cooldown thing was weird though
Regardless, it wasn’t the oddest thing Vic experienced that morning, it went away immediately after he finished reading it and getting drenched was certainly was a good motivator to look for cover (especially when the tallest things around were the weeds he was stepping on).
At least Mum didn’t stop me from walking to my room with my shoes on…
A rare frown wormed itself onto his face.
Whatever…
He supposed either the gun was broken or he had to wait for the cooldown to use it, meaning he was vulnerable for at least…
0:0:0:58:982
About 1 minute so I guess that means… Shit that means I’ve been only walking for about 17 minutes
As if to contribute to Vic’s dismal mood, someone pulled the roof off the heavens.
Out of nowhere the rain began to fall like an angry god, punching the nearby area with fat drops.
Vic was looking for shelter, but with the previously cold rain now pelting him with hot bullets, setting the surroundings with a new hail of watery fire, he had a hard time focusing.
As if glued, Vic had one hand on his face repeatedly wiping his soaked bangs from his eyes; the other hand gripping his only weapon with white knuckles pressed against his body, as if trying to steal even a little bit of warmth from the figuratively but definetly not literally hot weapon.
Ferocious shivers tore through him, smashing his teeth against each other with at a vicious beat, so when he saw a figure parting the rain in the distance, it took all he had to not immediately sprint forth.

Perhaps due to the overall strangeness of the day or for whatever reason that didn't matter, he stopped there and stood. A panel appeared before him.
0:0:0:06:765
Unsure of what he was doing, Vic stood there waiting for the cooldown to reach zero, his eyes locked to whatever stood in the distance, under darkening sky.
Wet hair landed on his eyes again, but he didn’t push it aside,at this point both of his palms were cemented to his gun.
For a moment the tension he didn't know existed loosened as the timer continued to tick downward and that silhouette remained still, but that relatively calm exterior crumbled-
After it began to race forward.
Sheer terror began build within Vic’s ribcage creating a cacophony that completely filled his ears, drowning out the sound of the mad rain falling around him and causing his chest to oscillate up and down at breakneck speed.
The inky figure grew close… and it continued to grow closer, its quickly nearing shape denoting inhuman speed, yet Vic didn’t stand completely motionless.
Not removing his narrowing gaze from the now visible turquoise scales in front of him, he raised a shaking pistol, aiming towards the blue monstrosity. The vibrating sight more like a fearful shiver than anything else.
Nevertheless, (although with a less than amateurish posture) there stood Vic poised to shoot…
0:0:0:03:029
No bullets came out.
Blue filled his vision: the fish monster tackled Vic.
He was sent flying backward, his back skidding on the wet grass, gaining distance from the it once again. Though as Vic then observed, the monster didn’t waste time.
It immediately leaped onto Vic’s now prone form, bringing its hideous visage in full focus. Vic caught its second tackle though, claws dug into the skin of his palms causing red to stain the white sleeves on his burning arms, but all Vic saw was the face of a scaled monster inches from his.
All in its scaled, disfigured and glossy glory, peering into him with a primal hunger that came from something that was wholly unnatural.

So when it began to recline its head backward, Vic didn’t try to get his hopes up rather he stole a glance at the pistol that lay dropped on his chest:
0:0:0:01:017
An action that didn’t seem to phase the monster on him, yet what began to horrify him, was when it began to open its mouth, rather than revealing rows of sharp teeth that he expected…
All he saw was a sphere of cyan energy pooling in its mouth.
At that moment, as Vic saw it stared at its head, he knew he had but a split-second to make a decision.
Releasing a grunt, he heaved his body up and to the left, shoving the thing of its aim just as it released it's blue bullet. Sending the water ball crashing into his shoulder, eviscerating the flesh like a chainsaw cutting through soft timber; making him feel an agnosing pain cutting through him, even through the prickly adrenaline pumping in his veins.
Biting on his tongue like a vice, Vic tore his bloody left hand from the loosening grip of scaled monstrosity and without waiting for it to finish the job, he unloaded four shots on the thing lying on the ground in front of him.
But by some miracle it lay there on his legs, three holes on its torse, painting his black school suitable trousers a crimson red. But as seconds passed Vic found it squirming for way too long in a way that left Vic unloading another two shots- this time getting it's head- adding a splatter of scarlet on his reddish sleeve, stopping it dead.
Vic then got up.
Using his gun filled hand to push himself, he stumbled upwards, his right arm dripping with reddened rainwater, hanging in the cold dank air like the lifeless limb of a lost puppet, but he didn’t look at that arm

…and looked away without reading it, opting instead to begin shuffling forward.
Not knowing where he was going, but probably anywhere far away from where he was, was the plan of action being formed in his head.
However, in a way that angered Vic, after a while treading slowly, various notably memories started to play on the glazed surface of his eyes…
What am I, a third-rate movie character?
The rage that cooked in his fevered head mixed with that which scorched on his shoulder, the shoulder that he felt his life draining from, pushing him forward.
In fact, at that point Vic was the most angry he had ever been in his life and he was only getting angrier.
Isn’t it funny? At that point Vic had the most of which that makes us act that he had ever had up until that point, yet he could only do one thing.
He just dragged one exhausted foot in front of the other.
He kept going getting further and further from the monstrous corpse but at some point his fiery anger began to be replaced with a glacial numbness.
Why was he walking? To what was he trying to reach, when he was somwhere so far from home, there was nothing for him here.
But as Vic was stared at the grey emptiness that lay all around him, just for just for a moment he could see someone shouting something
“Come on only settle for VICTORY right!!! That’s why I named you Victor” she was shouting from way across.
...
Vic paused for a moment before he took another step, faster than before, more passionate than before, with heaving perserance--
He lost consciousness before he hit the ground.

8 70The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
