《blood tax》Chapter 17 Bayeran

In appearance, this is just an ordinary mage notebook, without the delicate silver edges and energy flow. When Griffith reached out to the black cover...
"Be careful," Galadia widened her eyes to look at the notes and then at the apprentice knight. "When powerful mages are taking notes, part of their mental energy will be poured into the pages of the book. If things go on like this, the pages of ordinary books will become Mysterious objects, even part of the author's consciousness will be preserved."
"So powerful?" The apprentice knight didn't know much about magic items, so he withdrew his hand vigilantly, "Then do I need to take any protective measures?"
"Well~ this mage is not very strong," Galadia thought for a while, then looked at him with a blink of an eye and looked at the notes: "In addition, reinforcements of mage and knights will come at any time!"
Griffith immediately reached out, and when his fingers touched the cold cover...
Nothing happened.
"Huh~" The beautiful elf breathed a sigh of relief, and let go of the hand that clenched the short knife around his waist, "I forgot to tell you just now, if the situation is not good, I can chop your hand for you. I move super fast!"
The beautifully neat text is written concisely on the title page, like reading a pen pal's correspondence.
"To you in a hundred years,
"When you open this notebook, what is the difference between your time and mine?
"Let me take a wild guess.
"Has magic entered every household in your day? Fireball has replaced coal for cooking and heating? Horse-drawn carriages can fly in the sky and never run into pedestrians? Did humans land on the moon? Elves lift our entry restrictions on us. Has it? Has the world been freed from poverty, war and sickness?"
"Sorry~ none of them... The world in a hundred years has let you down!" Galadia rubbed over at some point, almost leaning on Griffith's shoulder, with pointed ears and long Griffith's heart tickled at the subtle touch of black hair.
"In my day, the study of magic was very dangerous," the note's author continued,
"Occasionally young apprentices of magic are maimed by the out-of-control magic, or go into madness when they touch the sense of danger hidden in the dark. At the beginning, my friends shred their own in frenzied pain. The body, the scene of growing countless granulation and eyes gave me nightmares.
"However, my study at Homonwarts made me gradually realize the essence of magic, and I was deeply attracted by this powerful and mysterious power. Although magic is full of dangers, I firmly believe that this power will change the world, and eventually So that we can break free from the shackles of this skin and go to the boundless sea of stars.
"This notebook is a record of all my experiences in school and what I have learned after experiencing all kinds of terrifying sights.
"Although I was on the verge of breaking down at one point, I got back on my feet with the help of my professors and my good friends. Refreshed and full of strength. I decided to move on for the next few years and record what I saw and heard that I couldn't tell anyone else. Come down, when you get along with this notebook for a period of time, the magic on the notebook will gradually lift the prohibition on reading.
"May imagination change the world."
Galadia raised her body slightly and flipped through the notes at the back: "The place to read is the experience in magic learning, most of the pages cannot be displayed. Rudias also put the notes on the desk while preparing the monster. Probably got inspiration from it. My God~ I can't imagine someone who wrote something like this on the title page would do such a horrible thing."

"Anyway, this thing belongs to me." Griffith put the notes in his backpack. "Let's go to the basement and see."
The two who regrouped opened and smashed one room after another of the mage tower, and finally groped towards the basement.
Along the way they found almost nothing of value."Be careful," Galadia whispered, grabbing Griffith's arm, almost against his back, "the room in front is the last one."
Griffith held a sword in one hand and a torch in the other, smashed open the wooden door in front of him and rushed in. Galadia stretched her longbow and followed.
This basement is very dry and much more tidy than expected. There are several stone cabinets and tables and chairs in the interior. By the cold stone wall, the two saw a naked woman locked at the foot of the wall.
"She's an elf!" Galadia caught a glimpse of the victim's pointed ears.
Griffith finds a key from the table and frees the imprisoned elf.
Galadia observed the state of the rescued elf and found that she was too weak to speak, and could only barely swallow the potion fed to her.
Griffith opened the stone cabinet and peered inside by the light of the torches. The huge stone cabinet is full of air-dried limbs and bones, withered and pale as if they had been stored for hundreds of years.
"Here are the remains of humans, orcs, and goblins," Griffith roughly identified and closed the stone cabinet. "It should be the experiment Rudias mentioned earlier, as well as the missing traveler."
"Well," Galadia nodded and helped the female elf lie down on the ground, "I need some blankets and clothes."
Griffith was about to nod his head when the sound of the door opening suddenly came from above the basement, accompanied by undisguised heavy footsteps.
"We are garrison knights, Miss Galadia, are you there?" A loud voice resounded throughout the building, "Walking with us is Master Veronos."
A powerful coercion followed. Griffith felt a strong breath walking down the steps. A young mage wearing a light blue robe appeared in front of the two with a solemn temperament.
As a spellcaster, with a gleaming shield of light swirling around him, he walked indifferently as a vanguard in front of two heavily armored warriors. Looking away, he found the elves and the apprentice knight, and heaved a long sigh of relief.
"Archmage, long time no see. This is my companion, the apprentice knight Griffith Brandon, thanks to his Rudias' plot failed." Galadia, wrapped in a blanket, took the Without a surprised expression, he bowed slightly to the Archmage.
"As long as you are all right, just leave it to us. When you arrive at Bayeran, the embassy will receive our detailed report," Veronos said politely to the elf. Then he nodded to the knights and entourage who followed closely, "Search this place thoroughly, we have to give the elves an explanation for this scandal!"
Archmage is the honorific title of Sequence 7 of the caster pathway. I can't think of such a character and reinforcements coming so quickly... Griffith saluted Veronos respectfully.
"What a disgusting guy," a follower who followed Salorian inspected the basement with disgust. "I thought Rudias was just withdrawn, but I didn't expect him to be so depraved."
"On the way to find the truth, if you are not careful, you will go astray," Veronos gently opened the sarcophagus full of bones, and then slowly closed it, "We should take this as a warning."

The Beyonders who followed Veronos were meticulously investigating. Everywhere they went, it was as if a dog had licked them, and hidden compartments and secret rooms were discovered one after another.
Galadia watched with wide eyes. She thought that she and Griffith had searched thoroughly, but she didn't expect that many hidden documents and items were dug up by Beyonders up and down the Mage Tower, and she couldn't help but tilt her head and sighed.
Veronos suddenly turned to Griffith and said, "Griffith Brandon, are you a vassal of Count Larmor?"
"Yes, Your Excellency the Archmage, I am Cytoral of the Larmor family," Griffith hurriedly replied, not expecting that such a character would be interested in talking to him.
"Then you have to prepare well for this course of Potions," Veronos said softly with a smile, "Are you going to Homonwarts to enroll? My mentor, the Supreme Mage Lord Salorian, will occasionally come to give You teach, he is very strict... Look forward to it!"
...
At the beginning of the Second Era, the forefathers of Bayeran built their walls with strips of stone, and made world capitals of marble on the peninsula between the Broken Sea and the Tranquil Sea. In the afterglow of the sunset over the strait, the boundless giant city was wrapped in golden light. From there, to the west, through the vast fields and forests, the road that could accommodate four carriages driving side by side led to the boundless mountains;
The inner city wall is more than 12 meters high and 5 meters thick. The surface is piled up with large pieces of finely cut limestone, and the interior is plaster made of lime and broken bricks. trace. There are hundreds of towers protruding outwards on the city wall.
20 meters outside the inner wall is a slightly lower outer wall. The outer wall is 9 meters high and the bottom is 2 meters thick. It is also guarded by hundreds of towers.
The city's towering walls, towers, and horse faces are like gold cast in the sun. Looking from the Jianhai Strait, the seven purple hills behind the city wall are covered with marble dreams, flowing with holy white light.
"Is this the city I'm defending..."
After leaving Rudias's mage tower, Griffith and the elves were escorted by the official all the way to the sea, where they took a boat and crossed the strait in only half a day.
Griffith, who came to this city for the first time, was shocked when he saw this giant city at sea level. Beside him, several travelers from afar were directly prostrate on the deck, weeping bitterly towards the golden royal city under the sunset.
"It's really... very spectacular," Galadia said in a low voice. "Although it's a bit rough, your human construction level is still decent~ If there is a chance in the future, I'll show you my hometown."
Sailboats across the sea docked at the harbour under the city walls. The huge port and the epic city walls not far away are a little out of place. It was already crowded with busy people, the stench of fish on the dock lingered, and pigeons flew between the white or red roofs.
Deep in the narrow and winding streets behind the port, there is a dignified darkness, as if there are ancient beasts perched under the high wall, giving people a mysterious and gloomy feeling.
Griffith stared at the dark street behind the pier, as if swallowed by the darkness. In that darkness, his faint inspiration seemed to be touched, and he always felt that there was a mystery hidden, but he couldn't tell what it was.
"Come with me," Galadia grabbed the dazed apprentice knight, "you need to change into a new suit. Your leather armor can no longer be worn, and you will be treated like a monkey by those snobbish Bayerans. of."
The elf pulled Griffith through the crowd with familiarity, and came to the square outside the port area and stopped a light carriage: "Go to the St. Romunus department store in the upper city."
The driver waved his whip and charged the two people into the busy ring road.
Griffith found that his eyes could not see at all. After leaving the port, the gentle slopes are full of beautiful houses and lively shops, and the avenue that can accommodate 16 horse-drawn carriages is full of horses and carriages all the time. Can pass through the sky bridge in mid-air. On the uphill, Griffith even saw hundreds of pigs, cattle and sheep being driven in the distance, moving along a dedicated road to the city like a tide.
The carriage carried the two through the port area and the lower town, and into the upper town built in the hills. Immediately it turned into another scene. The noisy and crowded road just now disappeared in the blink of an eye. Grapevines hang down from the terrace of the small building on the street, and leisurely pedestrians stroll under the tall plane trees, which is completely different from the previous people.
The St. Romanus department store of pure white marble was bigger than any fortress Griffith had ever seen. A well-dressed customer walked through it with a happy look.
"This is Uptown. The Larmor family you play for lives here," Galadia jumped out of the carriage with Griffith. "Let's go and change your skin first."
"I'll do it myself, don't bother you." The new apprentice knight felt that he was unusually unsuitable for this place.
"That won't work," Galadia rejected Griffith's idea, pushing him to a store, "they will bully you if I'm not around."
Several very beautiful young men and women stood respectfully inside and outside the store, and when they saw Griffith in plain clothes, they could not help frowning. At this moment, Galadia stepped out from behind the broad shoulders of the apprentice knight.
The clerks immediately greeted them with radiant faces and attentive faces, and extended their courtesy to the beautiful elf.
"Find him a coat, boots, shirt and cuffs, mainly in red and black," Galadia said casually, "don't care about his opinion, UU reading The price is 10 goldfels Rollins around."
200 Silver Lang!
Griffith was taken aback, this was his two-month salary.
The clerks immediately grabbed the apprentice knight, and two tall gentlemen dragged him into the fitting room and stripped him in the blink of an eye.
Galadia sat gracefully on the sofa beside her, watching the clerks keep changing the apprentice hangers into new clothes, pushed them out of the fitting room, and then pushed them back.
"He's a Cytolar, don't have to be too exaggerated," Galadia said with her arms crossed, admiring Griffith who was being pushed around, "I need two sets of shirts, I'll cut one for him first, Another set will be delivered to Larmor House tomorrow."
The name is highly respected by the shop staff. They looked at Griffith's expression a little more kindly.
The final set of choice was a crisp white shirt with silver cuff studs, black trousers, leather boots and a long, slim coat that was stately without looking stuffy. The delicate red pattern outlines a comfortable line on the jacket, and it just shows the physique and strength of the apprentice knight.
"That's good," Galadia stood up and circled around, "that's it. That way I don't have to worry about them not letting you have dinner together."
Griffith felt like he was writhing in a cloud, spending all his money before being let go.
"Then let's say goodbye here!" Galadia beckoned, turning lightly and walking towards the other store by herself, "I want to buy something and report to the embassy. We will meet again in the near future!"
"Is the time dimension of the elves in the near future?" Griffith asked hastily.
"No, no, really in the near future," the elf girl waved her hand, "this is what the great prophecy told me."

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
