《Sol-int》Prologue 2

After quite a bit of movement, I can determine that my current mother is awake and moving about. The question now is where or more specifically when I am. Most magic worlds may take place in barbaric and savage conditions but that doesn’t define what would happen in a place with real people living their lives every day constantly innovating, especially when there is magic to simplify the world around them.

If the world was pre-modern then that would put my odds of even being born into question. As an example, in my previous world, the likelihood of a baby dying in childbirth was 18% and the likelihood of children dying before the age of fifteen is around 80%. This means one out of five babies are born and four-fifths of those babies never reach their mid-teens or 7/20(35%) chance of survival to a reasonable age. That is an optimistic data table with a lot of leniency to child survival and didn’t take into account famine, war, and natural disasters.

Those facts bring me back to my training. Magic would be essential in disease which is the main worry point for me. This leads to the worst part of this reincarnation, I might not be able to use magic. I have been trying for what has felt like several hours to get even a glimpse or feel for the magic to no prevail. I have massively underestimated the difficulty of even learning magic, no wonder Mages are so sought after in novels!

On a more serious note, I have been trying to listen to the people talking to my mother. It is not as if I could understand them immediately, but if I start learning now I would not have to learn later and get much more detail from the world around me. Right now it only sounds like muffled gibberish but I have already started to memorize certain noises.

Just stay focused for a few more however long me! Hold in there!

Kerue made her way down the main road of the village picking up a small amount of dirt on the bottom of her skirt. Along the way, some of the older couples came out of their straw houses finally ready for the day's work. The more respectable of them were housed in mud-covered wood houses. Kerue and Felix could only afford a straw house like many couples their age. As she walked by, Kerue gave simple greetings to her neighbors.

“Good Morning Debra.” Kerue nodded to her blond-haired neighbor, “Good mornings, Kerue. You and Flex up late last night?”

“Yes we were, did we keep you awake by any chance? ”She nervously chuckled.

“Don’t worry dear, it is regular for newlyweds to be like that” She sighed exasperatedly, “I know Philip and I were like that for quite a while before having Tommy.”

“Speaking of, how IS Tommy? I hear he found a wife out in Welenor.” Kerue questioned.

“Oh Yes, precious little thing is like a butterfly. Elegant, colorful, and sticks to him like he’s a flower.” Debra smirked, “-pun intended.”

Kerue humored Debras’ poor attempt at a joke before changing the subject. "Harvest is well this cycle, isn’t it?”

“Suppose it is,” Debra gleaned at Kerue, “Though just because the harvest is good doesn’t mean that it will be a peaceful year. I remember when I was your age and we had a harvest just like this one and can you guess what happened next?”

“War bro-”

“War broke out! It was terrible! I thought I would never see Philip again!”

Debra wiped tears out of her eyes that were produced out of seemingly thin air and started to pull off into another street to the left.

“I will see you later I have to get more fabrics from Seph!”

Debra waved goodbye and went on her way leaving Kerue alone to walk for another couple hundred feet. To the side of the roadway was a very clean wooded shack that she went inside and retrieved a large basket to begin her workday. Kerue looked out tiredly at the expansive wheat fields.

“God, I feel terrible...” She solemnly sighed. Kerue settled the basket on her back. She let the leather straps snugly fit over her shoulders and down her chest.

“Mhn!” Kerue looked down at her breast, “Why so sensitive?”

Kerue shook her head in disbelief and carefully made her way into the golden fields. There were dozens of other women, men, and children that were harvesting with her. She harvested for hours until the sky started reddening before returning to the barn and deposited 9/10ths of the wheat, as per taxes.

Taking her wheat with her in a twine-packed bundle Kerue cruised her way back to the village. As she was walking a young boy sprinted past her, then another, and another. Before she knew it there were dozens of young boys, girls, and men sprinting or jogging to the village. Kerue hailed one of the girls to a stop to understand what was going on.

“Misha, what’s all this commotion about?” She asked inquisitively to the young girl.

“The hunters caught buncha animals aunt Kerue! They even caught a dire wolf!” The energetic young lady tugged against Kerues grasp before Kerue relented and let Milsha run off ahead.

She picked up her pace as the village outskirts came into view and Kerue could see into the town center. A gigantic black wolf that looked larger than her house was limply laying on its side as Felix and a couple of other village men pulled the wolf's guts onto a cart to be cooked.

Despite gaging at the sight and smell of the gruesome scene Kerue knew that tonight would be a massive party. She fought a smile onto her face, it would be awesome!
