《Greenstern (A YA Novelette)》Chapter 10

Aaina grabs Laura's ankle, her nails digging into her skin and she yells out in pain. She tried to pull her foot away, but Aaina's grip was so tight she stumbled backwards and landed on her tailbone. Aaina letting go of her foot as she made contact with the ground. Aaina was getting to her feet, there wasn't any time to throw the rope to Maggie now.
"Get them!" Aaina howled, turning to the army that silently stood around them, "kill them both!"
The dead began to close in on Laura and Violet, who helplessly tried to hold the dead off with the protection charm. Laura's hands desperately tried to undo the knots, as their backs neared closer and closer to the wall behind them, but Aaina had done them so tightly that her nails couldn't pull them undone. Laura realised this wasn't going to work, she should have listened to Violet. They should have come up with a plan to defeat the dead. Laura racks her brain, thinking back to all the classes she's had over the years. Oh if only it wasn't so hard to remember things under pressure! Laura thinks to herself. What were the spell basics again? A spell can be overcome, if foreseen by anyone. Of course! Some spells can be overridden. But that would mean doing the unspeakable, the most disgusting thing a person could do. But Laura couldn't see any other option, their backs were literally against a wall. Laura saw a glint at her feet. Aaina's knife, it must have fallen out of her pocket when she got pushed. Laura grabbed it off the ground. She pushed the rope into Violet's hand, who looked at her confused and scared, before turning to look right into Aaina's berserk eyes. Laura ran through the crowd of the dead, pushing them out of her way as they lash out scratching at her skin. She grabs Aaina's hand, and before she could even react, slashed the knife across her palm. Aaina screamed out in pain, but Laura held tight to her hand and held it out as she began to chant the spell she had heard her say.

"Blood once yours, blood still alive. A taste of life to regain thou. And rise, to my side. And help me give back what is right. Rise, rise, rise up!"
Laura had never concentrated as hard in her life, she could almost physically feel all of her energy being drained. Gasping, the spell was done. She had tried to make some adjustments to the spell, hopefully it's worked. The dead turned their eyes onto Laura, she felt a rush in her body that made her feel sick. It had worked, she knew it had. In a voice, much stronger than she felt inside, she told them to follow her. She let go of Aaina's hand and she started to make her way back to the graveyard. She had never felt anything like this before, it felt as if someone held a hand around her body, tightening their grip with every step she take's. There was a buzzing sound in her ears, when she tuned her ears into it she realised that they were words, and that the dead were speaking to her. It was hard to make out, but it would take a fool not to hear their cries for help. They were in pain, so much pain, their bodies weren't meant for the living world anymore. The buzzing sound got so intense that it became screams in her ears, Laura had to push them away. Her cheeks were damp, she hadn't realised it but she was crying. Laura had never felt something so awful in her entire life. She felt as if her body was vibrating, unable to stop the shaking in her hands, she felt so out of control. She began to walk with more purpose, determined to set things right, the pressure was on her shoulders now.

Violet felt stunned by what had just happened. Why would Laura do that? A part of her wanted to be grateful for her saving her life, but another part felt equally disgusted. She stared down at Aaina's face, she had fainted from the release of the spell. Violet felt like she might be sick again. She held the rope up to her face, and inspected the tightly tied knots before putting it between her teeth and as hard as she could, tried to undo it. Little by little, the knot came free. Violet looked at the rope in her hands, and couldn't help but think how anticlimactic it was. She jumped in her skin when she heard voices crying out from inside the dorms. Violet wanted to go back inside and find help for Maggie, but she couldn't leave Aaina alone in case she wakes up and runs. She looked down at Aaina again, why has she done this to herself? Was it really worth the cost? Violet decided that she couldn't wait for others to come to her anymore, and so she squatted down and heaved Aaina up into her arms. It was extremely difficult, especially since she felt like a rag doll filled with concrete, but with every shaking step Violet got closer to the house. As she neared the emergency exit, Mrs. Myers swung the door open, wide eyed.
"Violet! What on earth has been going on? Oh my, is that Aaina in your arms?" Violet walked past her and made her way to the infirmary while Mrs. Myers danced around her unsure of what to do.
"Aaina has done some horrible things tonight Mrs. Myers, but as of right now, we need to help Maggie Williams, she's been hurt and needs medical attention."
"Oh my. Well, lead the way Violet." As they walked through the corridors to where Maggie sat, teachers were starting to come down the stairs looking extremely startled, despite the fact that they had told them their plan. It was extremely humanising to see them this way, outside of the usual classroom walls and the dining room tables. Occasionally you might catch the sight of them in their dressing gowns, or sitting in the nurses room if they caught a cold, but never like this, never scared. As they reached Maggie, Mrs. Myers started fussing around her, asking what had happened. Violet lay Aaina down on the ground. She crouched down next to Maggie, all she could do now was hold her hand.
