《The Crimson Castle》Chapter 9

Before Claire left the classroom to pick up her sister Mel, she struck up a conversation with Doug for a bit. He was really friendly. Mrs. Condor approached them and handed Claire her Schedule.
“I’m assuming you didn’t know your own schedule. You have school 5 days a week. Twice a week you meet with me and the other three days you meet with the other Schools here.”
“Thanks, Mrs. Condor.”
“Don’t mention it.” Mrs. Condor replied.
“Well, it was nice meeting you Claire, I’ve got to run. I’ll see you tomorrow!” Doug said as he stood up to leave.
“See you tomorrow!” Claire said.
On her way to pick up Mel, Claire decided that she would step on every roach she saw. She wanted to level up and to see what would occur. She stayed close to the shops and saw a roach scuttle into an alley. She followed it and it went behind a trash can. Claire moved the trashcan and saw a bunch of mesmeroaches huddled in a group on the stone floor.
“Jackpot!” Claire thought. Before the mesmeroaches could even affect Claire, She was already in the air to pounce on them. She started to fall and slammed her boots onto all of them. A very audible squish was heard. A bunch of popups came up at once. Claire just looked at the last one.

“So I get new hidden abilities when I upgrade my base stats?” Claire thought. This could get interesting. Claire was however upset that the game didn’t explain what the skill did exactly. Claire assumed it helped her locate quest items, but how? Another thing that was bothering Claire was that her inventory was still 0/10. What exactly was her inventory? “Maybe…” Claire thought as she picked up a pebble from the street. Claire intensively thought about the pebble moving into her inventory and the pebble vanished from her hand. Claire checked her inventory and found that it now contained 1/10 items.
“Eureka!” Claire said out loud.
Claire thought about moving the pebble from her inventory to her hand and the pebble instantaneously appeared in her palm. “This is incredible!” Claire thought. This would definitely come in handy. Claire set the pebble down and headed towards Mel’s school.
When she got there Mel was already waiting.
“What took you so long big sis?” Mel said as she stuck out her tongue.
“Ha, yeah whatever.” Claire replied sticking out her own tongue in response.
“How did your first day of school go?” Mel asked.
“I passed the quiz not knowing anything about this world, so I got that going for me which is nice.” Claire knew Mel would get the Caddyshack reference, but couldn’t resist using it anyways.
“Nice, I aced mine as well. Let’s get going back to the house, the cook told me were having duck for lunch.” Mel said.
They made their way back to the security gate separating the noble sector form the merchant sector. This time the line was a little bit longer. Armed guard were eyeing everyone in line. Once they got to the front of the line, they were waved through. When they were in the Noble sector, Mel stopped at a bakery really quickly to buy some sugar cookies for the two of them. Claire noticed that the two cookies cost two silver pieces. “Finally, my first information about the worth of money in this world.” Claire thought. “So it looks like one silver piece is equal to about one US dollar.”The bread was delicious, like all of the food Claire had eaten so far in this world. As they approached their house, Claire noticed one of her neighbors was sitting on the porch. “Oh Mel come here.” The neighbor yelled.

“Oh boy” Mel said quietly to Claire.
Claire and Mel walked up to the steps to where the old neighbor was sitting. “Hello Mrs. Pandora, how is it going?”
“It’s going good, the reason I beckoned you both over here is to ask Mel if she ever found those 10 black roses I need to complete my garden?”
“No Mrs Pandora, I’ve been busy” Mel lied.
“Oh my goodness, I’ve been waiting so long for those.” Mrs. Pandora replied
“Again, I’m sorry.” Mel said unconvincingly.
“Well what about you Claire, Why don’t you get the 10 black roses Mel promised me to get?” Mrs. Pandora said.
Mel looked over at Claire and subtly shook her head. Claire didn’t want to be mean so she said “Sure thing Mrs. Pandora.”
“Oh, thank you Claire! I heard about what happened to you by the way. Your mother visited me this morning. I tried to cheer her up the best I could. You don’t see much crime in the Noble sector’s these days.” Mrs. Pandora said.
A quest suddenly notification popped up.
Side Quest: Collect 10 black roses for Mrs. Pandora
EXP: 100
Reward: Unknown
“Oh Jesus Christ” Claire thought to herself. Claire did not like collection quests. She would probably have this one in her uncompleted quest tab for awhile. How unfortunate for Mrs. Pandora.
“Well we have to get going Mrs. Pandora, nice talking to you.” Mel said as she subtly tugged Claire away.
“Bye you two!” Mrs. Pandora said
“Bye, nice meeting you.” Claire said as she was being pulled away by Mel.
“I can’t believe you accepted her expedition for the flowers. She has been bugging me about that for months now. I guess I’m glad the burden has been passed on to you. Ha.” Mel said.
“Well, even if I don’t collect those roses, I’m glad I could be of service to you. Claire said as they reached the front door to their house.
As soon as they entered they both smelled lunch coming from the dining room. They looked at each other and raced in the halls heading for the room. When they entered they saw a magnificent edible display. Three roasted ducks, roasted pineapple, hors d’oeuvres, tea sandwiches, crackers and cheese were laid out in front of them. Their mother, Susan was stuffing herself with the tea sandwiches and said “Oh my two babies, I’m so glad to see you.” She came over to give them both a hug.
“I’m feeling much better by the way, the family doctor said I was just having a light hysterical episode.” Susan continued.
The three of them had lunch together. They did more eating than talking. When Susan was full she said she was going to take her usual afternoon nap and exited the room.
“Oh thank god, I thought she was never going to leave.” Mel said.
“Why did you want her to leave?” Claire said with a puzzled look.
“Because I wanted to show you this.” Mel had a huge grin on her face as she retrieved a vial from her backpack and handed it to Claire. Claire concentrated on the vial and a notification popped up.

My father scolds me sharply. I flinch at the anger in his voice and quickly retract my hand, inches from the trunk of the tree. "Sorry father, I couldn't help it. The trees are just so beautiful," I whine turning towards him. His face softens slightly and he scoops me up into his muscled arms. I wrap my small arms around his neck and bury my face into his shoulder. He hugs me tightly and carries me away from the forest. "Why can't we go into the forest?" I ask, looking over his shoulder to see the red and gold leaves slowly disappear from view as we climb the hill. "The forest is a dangerous place," he sighs. "How can something so beautiful be so dangerous?" I mutter in confusion. "The danger is in its beauty."**Cover by SodaliteSilver**
