《Nightmare》A New Problem

I run away from the mountain as it comes down. I didn’t know that Kroc had that much explosions on him. I stop running and watch the rest of the mountain come down. I feel empty for a second. I lost Kroc. We weren’t the best of friends but he was the closest thing that knew what was going on. I get a sickening pit in my stomach as Flint approaches me. “I’m am sorry Zack.” I look at him with the empty feeling slowly leaving me.
“What do I have to do next?” My voice sounds cold and weird. I know nothing is controlling me but I just want this to end.
“Head East. We need to finish off the Infection and save your brother.” I feel a headache come on as I hold my head. I shake my head off as it goes away.
“Fine.. I want to keep..” I pause looking around. Flint has disappeared. “Flint? God. We aren’t doing this again.” I tap my foot in annoyance as Flint appears again. “Finally. I want to keep..” I stop as I realize that it’s not Flint. I see Wolf staring at me. I take a step back. “How are you..” He glares at me walking to me.
“I’m not. I’m in your head now.” I run to the SUV. I see it destroyed from some falling rocks but Wart’s motorcycle completely fine. I hop onto the it and speed away. I am not dealing with this right now. I speed away from the mountain and its destruction. I try to calm down and notice that I need to get some gas. I try to find the closest gas station and pull into it. I start to pump gas into the motorcycle. “You can’t run away from me.” I groan angrily and look at Wolf.

“Please go away. I lost Kroc and I can’t deal with a ghost or whatever you are.” He frown leaning against the gas pump.
“I’m sorry that you and Nightmare are exactly the same.” I pause confused.
“What do you mean?”
“You are punishing yourself. You couldn’t save Kroc. You killed me. Nightmare use to do the exact something. Punish himself for it.” I frown trying to think Wolf out of existence. “That won’t work. You feel awful for what you did. So you are stuck with me until you forgive yourself.” I stop pumping gas and get on the motorcycle. “Are you really going to go back to the group?” I frown not talking. “Just go ahead and defeat the Infected. That ensures no one gets hurt.” I start up the motorcycle and start driving East. Wolf has a good point. I don’t want anyone else to get hurt because of me. I spend the next week traveling east. I mostly keep clear of any infected beings. If any of them got too close, I would deal with them. Wolf stayed with me everywhere I went. Once I thought I lost him, but he appeared next to me.
I pull over near a sign that says Safe Haven printed across a wooden sign. Wolf walks out of some nearby shadows. “Hmm.. Could be a trap.”
“A risk I have to take. I need supplies. I don’t know where the main Infection is thanks to you.” He rolls his eyes walking in front of me.
“Not my fault Nightmare won’t appear.” I speed through him as he disappears into shadows. I keep driving until I come across a walled off compound. From what I can see, the compound is no bigger than a few buildings surrounded by solid concert. I slow down pulling up to a pair of metal doors. A male voice of a speaker comes on.

“State your business.”
“I need supplies and to refuel.” A few minutes pass as the door slowly opens. I drive the motorcycle in and see a small trading hub has been set up in the middle of the small city. A bar and a gas station are the only other two major things within the compound. I pull the motorcycle over and get off it. Two people approach me.
“We have a few rules here. Don’t cause any issues and be ready to fight if you are needed.” I walk past them. Wolf appears next to me.
“Seems cold Zack.” I frown walking through the stands.
“I can’t get attached to anyone.” He laughs slightly watching me pick out items to buy.
“You sound just like him. Oh whoa is me. I have all this godly power but I can’t save anyone I love.” I accidently crush a compass staring at Wolf.
“Shut it. I..” I pause as I see an older man walk in the distance. I get a sense that I should know that man but I can’t figure it out.
“Zack? Earth to Zack.” I shake my head slightly looking at Wolf.
“Leave me alone.” He boos as I pay for everything. I put them in my bags as I head over to the gas station. For being such a small compound, a few hundred people seem to be making it great here. I get to the gas station and tell someone to fill up my motorcycle. I pay them as I see the bar.
“When’s the last time you had some time for yourself?” I turn away from Wolf.
“I am on a mission. I don’t have time.” He laughs walking to the bar.
“Well I am going to have some fun.” I frown confused looking toward him. He disappears in a cloud of smoke. I groan internally and head into the bar. Just in case he can do something.

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
