《Just a Lowly Monster》Darkness Encroaches

It's been over a year according to my status. After receiving my status information, I made my way through the barren land that I considered home by then. While on the move, I hunted the egg sacs and had yet to run into any other living beings. That is, until today.

I had placed the monster that had thumped past my egg in the back of my mind. It only resurfaced after I crossed over a craggly peak. On the ground, was a large set of bones. Easily as big as a house. I couldn't tell what it was but that's when I realized that I wasn't alone.

Spending a year helped me adapt to the environment. My body had gotten used to the heat and suffocating atmosphere. My eyes could pierce the night and after spending so long alone I assumed I was the only living thing here. After finding the skeleton, I realized the need to have a weapon. My monster form could fight but I would much rather prefer it if I had a weapon. Call that my human side talking.

I went to the skull of the monster and ripped out a fang. I gripped it in my hand and practiced a slice. This should work. I smiled for the first time in a while and began moving again. There seemed to be no end to this wasteland. It was just rocks, the occasional bones, and the never-ending pulsating sacs on the ground.

This went on for what felt like an eternity. Surprisingly, my stamina never lessened and I never felt too exhausted to continue. Though I won't lie and say I had fun. My body may not be tired, but my mental state was deteriorating. There was a reason why I almost cried after reaching the end of this rocky field.

The sacs stopped appearing and so too did the low haze in the horizon. What was before me was just darkness. Pure darkness, so dense and deep that it felt like an abyss. With my monster senses I could tell that it wasn't a place I should enter. But it was either facing the unknown or continuing back on my journey across the sea of eggs. I had to say, I was rather tired of eating these hellroaches. I took a suffocating gasp of air? and started walking into the darkness.

Almost immediately, a wave of killing intent passed on me. I gritted my teeth to stay conscious and was forced to my knees. It wasn't just killing intent, it felt like gravity itself and the earth was telling me to bow and kneel. Then I heard a voice. It was full of malice and ice-cold rage as it crept towards me.

"A mere insect dares to wander into my domain. Tell me, little one, how do you want to die?"

The darkness was swirling around me and as my eyes tried to adjust I could make out a shape forming. Fear. That's the only thing I felt. This being. This being was so evil, so powerful, something that didn't exist even the worst of nightmares. My instincts told me of the difference in our power and I knew it could kill me faster than I could blink. I couldn't run or hide. I was stuck.

Any illusions of power I had were meaningless before this monstrosity. Despite my quavering will, I gathered my courage and tried to open my mouth to beg for mercy.

At that moment, my eyes cleared and finally adjusted to the pitch darkness. I widened my eyes. I wasn't staring at some hideous monster. Rather, she looked humanoid with the obvious difference being her size. Easily 5 meters at least, I was able to get a view of her form. She was breath-takingly beautiful covered in a black dress that seemed to be made of the night sky. Yet, lust was far from my mind. Rather, I felt an inclination to kneel and worship her.

Then I opened my mouth.

"This humble one begs of you to spare their life. I came in without knowing this was your territory. Please grant this one the chance to repent of his foolishness in disturbing you."

Her lips curled in a slight sneer.

"Hoh. Good of you to know your place. Now now, I can't just have you leaving here. You dared to intrude upon the house of my great self. Humu, how about I make you my slave. I could use more hands in the mansion after all."

She muttered the last bit to herself. I prostrated on the ground.

"I thank you for your incredible kindness. How shall I address you ojou-sama?"

"Nyx."

"Yes, Nyx-sama."

She beckoned me to follow her. Her presence still shaking me, all I could do was swallow in dread and obey. And that's how my life with the Primordial of Darkness, Nyx, began.
