《Cross Roads: Rebranding Chaos (Book Four)》Epilogue

With his father doing maintenance and installing a software patch, Mordechai had to take the rest of the day off from work. It was okay since he wanted to try out a brand-new video game that Andrea bought him just recently named Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, a first-person shooter video game published by Activision.

He wasn’t really a fan of first-person shooters like Andrea was, but he got the hang of it. In his own apartment, he was sitting on his couch in his private living room, playing multiplayer with Andrea, who is playing online with him.

“So, the Nether Elite are Interpol agents now. Weird…” Mordechai nonchalantly stated.

“Morrie, I can’t believe you’re are so chill about this. Those fucking wolf sluts are police officers now! Meanwhile, the NYPD won’t give me a badge if I wanted it,” Andrea criticized over his headset.

Mordechai just shrugged his shoulders and shook his head out of indifference, “I guess that’s something we have to deal with now. I told my brother before; they are relentless in making a statement. By discretion of the law, they didn’t break any, and they kept themselves out of trouble. And in a time of understanding, Interpol gave these girls a second chance.”

“You’re still so young… One day you’ll understand that not everyone deserves a second chance and stay buried,” Andrea disagreed.

“It’s all about determination, Andrea,” Mordechai lectured while playing. “In one story, there is a farmer and a donkey. One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

“Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and begin to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down.”

“Fascinating…” Andrea was never really a fan of Mordechai and his folktales relating to real life, and this was no different.

“A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that fell on his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!” Mordechai finished as he won the game.

Andrea sighs, knowing there has to be some connection, “The donkey tried to fight for survival, while everyone already made up their mind that the donkey was beyond saving? Or something like that?”

“You might think so, but not the donkey. He did everything he could to survive and succeeded. Kind of like those ‘fucking wolf sluts’ you refer to all the time.” He emphasizes.

“Because they are? Especially Ryoko, she’s gonna catch something one day, always fucking around with four guys at once.” Andrea admits.

Letting out a disgusted sigh, Mordechai tries his best to explain moral of the tale to his biased friend, “Look, all I am trying to say is that life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick is not to get bogged down by it. We can get out of the deepest wells by not stopping. And by never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!” Mordechai proudly explained.

“Whatever, Gandhi!” Andrea said.

“Oh, you’re just mad that I won!” Mordechai pointed out.

“You are giving me life lessons while beating my ass in Call of Duty, you goddamn right, I am angry! I thought you didn’t like first-person shooter games! You, being a Japanese RPG fanboy!” Andrea accused.

“I don’t. They’re all the same. You play one first-person shooter, you pretty much know exactly what to do with all of them,” Mordechai flatly explained.

“Let’s… just play some more kill confirmed!” Andrea blew off.

Many others were afraid, while some were concerned. Eerily, Mordechai was calm and collective of this whole situation. In fact, he was incredibly supportive of the wolf girls' sudden second chance of redemption.

He knew it was only a matter of time before they were given such an opportunity, to begin with. To redesign, rebuild, and to reclaim. Why he was so confident and calm, it’s because the wolf girls deserved it.

He knew the wolf girls were more than just victims in the grand scheme. Now they have the chance to indeed become what they always wanted to be. Or what Sudbina Novak wanted them to be. However, the choices they make, the consequences will face afterward, will all rest on them.
