《Cartilage Of Life》Cartilage Of Life Chapter 1: The Change

“Eh uhm…hm”
Consciousness started coming back to me but a headache came upon me out of no where
I slowly open my eyes
“Huh….?”
I slowly rise from the bed
“Where…..is this?”
Around me were walls with objects that were deprived of color and of proper form, a lamp with no details, a teddy bear with no eyes or fur, a simple room
“Uh…hmmm?”
I slowly turn around and saw Aria laying on his side, I gently shake him in an attempt to wake him up
“Aria…Aria… wake up…”
“hmmm…?”
Aria breath’s out a heavy breath then turns his body around to face me
“What is it Yutou?...eh?”
Aria seems to have noticed the atmosphere that surrounded us, his eyes half open looked around
“Yutou where are we?...”
I take another look but I can’t seem to give him an answer that will satisfy our curiosity
“I don’t know”
Aria ruffled and tried to stand up but fell back to the bed
“What are you doing Aria?”
Aria breath’s heavily and starts crying, his eyes stared down on to his right hand
“W-what happened to me?!”
His eyes looked at where his right hand use to be. Wrapped in bandages with no signs of blood Aria’s hand was cleanly cut from his body
He looked up at me
“Ah?!”
Aria was taken back by something that he saw, his breath suddenly started cutting quickly breathing but his body was unable to keep up, hands trembling he pointed with his detached hand at my chest
While looking at him I move my hand towards my chest, in a circular motion i felt everything that was on my chest, fingers touching something strange on the left side of my chest
A sticky almost soft like texture was felt on my fingers the closet I can relate this to is the texture of freshly cut meat

I moved my hands in front of my sight only to be greeted by the sight of a red liquid that I very well know of
“Blood…”
On the left side of my chest was my heart ripped open with no skin or organs covering it, it was up for display and my body was it’s pillar
“Ah…Ah…Ahhhhh!!!”
Realizing what I am looking at I panicked causing me to fall off the bed and onto the cold floor
Both of us terrified by each other’s appearance tried to back away from each other, Aria still unable to believe the space where his hand once was continued to look at it
What is going on?
Where are we?
What happened to us?
My back leaning on what seems to be a wall I contemplated these questions to my self while watching my movement to make sure that my heart doesn’t get damaged or touched by anything
*Knock Knock*
From the other side of the door I heard a knock
*Knock Knock*
It continued to knock this time stronger than before
*Knock Knock*
It’s knock became stronger as if whoever was knocking had enough of waiting, moving to the side of my brother was the main priority for me right now so I moved off to his side, still terrified by me he tried to move away from me but in an unknown place his instinct told him to cling to me
*Knock!*
With another knock the door fell down on the floor, dust rose from the floor up to the air, within the cloud of dust was somebody no it’s not somebody
“Come Eat”
A thing that had a human like body was standing in front of us blocking whatever light that tried to come through
It wore a white hood with a blue and green logo on the right side of it’s chest, the thing wore long black stockings and brown school show but it’s face was unclear either that or her face was unidentifiable in the first place

“COME EAT!”
The thing commanded us with another shout, shivering with fear my judgment became clouded with fear
{Should we go for it and run away? We don’t know where we are even I’m not even sure whether this place is above ground or underground what to do what to do what to do what to do!}
The thing started walking towards us while shouting to us
“ EAT EAT EAT EAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!”
Eat? What do you mean by eat? Does it want to eat us? What does it want from us?
The thing reached out it’s hand for me and then quickly grabbed me by my hand
“EAT!!”
The thing lifted me from my hand and swung it’s arm off to the side throwing me away from my brother and the room, my body slam’s into the door that was facing the room we came from
Soon after my brother was also thrown out of the room, his body struck mine
“Auh!” Aria let out a moan of pain as he rolled off from my body on to the red carpet
I moved my hands towards Aria checking on him to see if he was ok or not
“Aria! Aria!! Are you okay!!?”
Aria replied with a cough
The thing comes out of the room slowly, it puts long arms on our arm and pulls on it, his hands were both soaked in blood, now that the thing is in a well lit room I could see that his neck is also covered in blood, his face was as dark as coal yet he didn’t have any features on it
No eyes, No lips, no mouth no ears, it only had hair and a voice, a voice? No to call it a voice would be the wrong choice of words, it’s voice sounded like the angry roar’s of a thunder storm, it was deep and very vivid
The thing continued dragging us in this place that seems to be a hallway, a red carpet that extended all the way to the end of the hall, both sides of this hall had white doors on it, the doors never stopped, each door had a nameplate on it
Yamato, Kurotsu, Meyako and so on
“EAT HERE!”
The Thing lead us to a white double door, we opened it and inside of it was…
A cafeteria?

The Adventures of Alan
What happens when a university professor somehow ends up in another world, where magic bends the laws of nature? Alan is, albeit unwillingly, about to find out. As a professor of physics, he has a decent understanding of how the world works, or so he likes to think. Armed only with his knowledge, Alan is thrown into a world very different from his own. In his new reality, he will meet both friends and foe, he will seek knowledge, he will build power, and perhaps he will even find love again? Follow Alan through his adventures, and find out for yourselves how he deals with the challenges thrown at him by a new world, while struggling with the issues brought with him from his old one. * Author’s note: A fair warning. This is the first time I’ve published anything, and basically the first time I’ve written anything more than mandatory school-stuff. The story will probably have inconsistencies, grammatical errors (not my native tongue, though that excuse is getting old), and potentially confusing (missing?) plot. I will naturally do my best to write something worth reading, but my main goal in writing this story is to have fun and explore the limits of my own creativity. My hope in publishing it here, is that I’ll reach someone who enjoy the story, and can push me forward towards writing more, as it is difficult at times to find the motivation to write just for myself. Additionally, I can’t really promise to have regular updates, as I have a full-time job that often likes to take the ‘full-time’ part literally, and a sporadic social life that occasionally surprises me (happy surprises mostly, so I shouldn’t complain). I’ll aim for once a week to start with, and take it from there. Happy reading! Cover photo by Jeff Hire (/photographer/gun4hire-58415), from https://freeimages.com/.

Contact First
2039 - Earth A narrow beam energy signal appeared aimed squarely at earth from the TRAPPIST system. The communication consisted of a layered set of repeating data over several thousand wavelengths. Over the next few months scientists discovered that the lower wavelengths carried an encoded numerical language which could then be used to interpret the more complicated messages carried on the higher wavelengths. After half a year of painstaking work the signal was fully decoded. It described a small satellite launched along a precise trajectory towards the fourth planet of our solar system. Included was a package of advanced research that humanity would need to have ready in order to receive the satellite and decelerate it safely. The alien data provided the kick that humanity needed to turn from petty squabbling and unite to explore the final frontier. Major government and corporate leaders worked together to create the framework for the United Federation of Sol. UFS spaceports went from scaffolding to daily launches in every major city around the globe. Ships floated like dandelion seeds, spreading on solar wind to grow into colonies. 2397 - Mars orbit, Egeria Station The command center was a hive of activity as checks were conducted and systems initialized. Scientists flitted by like mayflies as communicators beeped and holoscreens spat out green tinted readouts. Nervous energy was thick in the air as everyone anticipated the culmination of over three hundred years of work. Massive fusion reactors under the planet's surface thrummed with barely restrained power as energy fed into a gleaming metallic maze criss crossing the planet. Metal fingers reached up, overshadowing the mighty olympus mons and trying to grab the stars. All over the solar system, people quickly turned to look as gigantic energy lances shot from the dusty fourth planet. Two years later. The same people that clapped loudly at the successful activation of project Hermes now wait with baited breath. A silver capsule trailing bright photonic sails is captured by a net of grav beams and guided with care bordering on reverence into the station. Holoscreens across the headquarters project an image of the sleek craft settling in the bay. Data connections are established and the holoscreens blink to white. Slowly an image forms on the screen. Across the headquarters people stare in wonder as a wholly alien face stares back. "Contact established. Welcome to the universe."

It contains terrifying moments of murder, suicide, mayhem, rituals, hauntings, and nightmares in various poetic forms from ballads to sonnets and many more. Most of these pieces are oneshot tales, but the "Haunted Blades" ballad sequence is marked with an asterisk (*) throughout the collection to denote an interconnected series of poems.
