《A Large Debt (Shuli Go Vol. 2)》Part 3

The next morning Lian woke early and checked the cart while Tang slept. There was a small bow and arrow inside that she used to hunt geckos and a snake for their breakfast meal. She saw he had never eaten a reptile by his dubious expression when he awoke to find her roasting them. But his expression was also tainted with memories of the night before. Lian, in spite of herself, was tainted with them too.
“Trust me, they taste better than they look. I’ll cut off the heads too, so you don’t have to think about what they look like whole,” she winked at him, and he blushed and smiled. As they ate Lian prompted him to tell her about himself – where he studied, why he’d stopped.
“I had an older brother, but he was drafted six months ago. My father and uncle – they were the two older ones… back there – they were getting too old and didn’t want my sisters to have to give up marriage, so they asked me to come back.”
“Did you want to?”
“I realized I… didn’t want to be a doctor,” he admitted, and Lian found herself waiting on each of his pauses, feeling a slight joy when the thought he completed matched what she had assumed it would be. At once she chastised herself, and realized it would be better if they reached Chongqing that day. Then they could go their own ways. “I don’t know what I’ll do now, but I don’t think I’ll stay in Chongqing. I think I need to find a new path.”
Before they finished packing up to leave, Tang stopped in front of her and bowed again. “Madame Zhao,” he implored a formal tone, “I owe you… a great debt. Not just for my life, but…”

“I had fun last night too,” she joked, causing him to blush and throw on that smile which softened her heart.
“I mean it,” he responded, looking her straight in the eye, “I wouldn’t be alive without you. I do owe you.”
She returned his smile and slapped him on the shoulder, “well maybe once you sell your goods you can buy me a nice meal. Something warm blooded.”
He nodded and they set off. It was five more miles to Chongqing, but they quickly joined a major road and were caught up in the swell of the city’s traffic as farmers and other merchants joined them on their way into the city. Just after entering the city gates, they pulled off of the main road and said their goodbyes.
“Well Mister Wei, I wish you the best.”
“And you too, Madam Zhao. And I’ll remember what you said. If I have enough money leftover from my sales, I’ll buy you a meal.”
“Perhaps I’ll have more than that for you next time we meet,” she said slyly, not meaning to, but finding herself unable to resist. Her desperation had returned much more quickly than she’d expected.
Tang just blushed again, before bowing formally and taking his cart to go. Lian went too, her heart a little heavy but her head much clearer as soon as Tang was out of sight. She asked a few locals for the way to the mayor’s office, and set off with her bag of severed hands, to try and find her reward.

Starlight Antiquities
There is a place in the galaxy that deals in antiquities of all kinds, human and non-human alike. Its inventory of artifacts is colossal as is its inventory of mercs who they hire to acquire any artifact a client may wish that is yet to come into their possession. The ill-reputable business is constantly rubbing against the changing tolerance of the Union's government, and there are many security officers who would love nothing better than to vaporize the whole place with its owners inside. Yet, there are many tasks that nobody can do better, especially in the vastness of deep space where Union law is worth less than the energy needed to display it. One of its jobs involves finding an artifact that may not only hold the future of the human race but may also disturb the balance of the whole galaxy. *** While waiting for the next season of Mandalorian and the Witcher, and rewatching Firefly for the gazillionth of time, I decided to write this space-based series. The series has some litRPG elements in it, but it does not read like one. So, you won't run into any blue screens here. Yet, I wanted to use litRPG to give another dimension to this whole story and make it as unique as possible. This is a work-in-progress. Hope to keep on improving and fixing my mistakes as I go along.

A World With or Without Aliens
Nothing matters. It's not my opinion, it's a scientific fact. This is neither good nor bad, it just... is. I watched my entire country burn, fried on a patriotic pan after some jerk fired a bunch of nukes at the docile fleet of alien ships hovering over us. Who gave this moron such power? I don't know. Everyone involved is most likely dead by now. As for me, I can't die. I feel pain like a normal person would (I think), but no matter how terrible the conditions, I will never die or pass out. Fortunately, a lot of alien technology survived its crash to Earth, so I get to spend some time playing with it until Mr. Author gets bored and decides to screw up my life. Beware, this has a "harem" tag. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm the main character and am therefore subject to this novel's timeline. While this bars me from the sweet ignorance of Chapter 1's me, it does have other perks... for example, I can tell you that heroine number one is personally responsible for kil-!? H-hey, back off! I'm your character, so if you didn't want me to be like this, then you should've written me differently! Randomguy here! In all seriousness, this novel is meant to explore the concept of nihilism as a post-apocalyptic/supernatural-scifi/satire told from a nihilistic introvert's first-person perspective. As you heard from my unsettled main character, each heroine is going to be a different type of horrifying socio/psychopath with dark motives and dangerous abilities (most of which are psychological). Why would I do something like this? Because I am, in reality, a nihilist who is often frustrated by weird things, like unrealistically dramatic stories, the industrialization of art (specifically music), and people who think swimming in brown creekwater for five hours is a "fun" activity. Don't get me wrong, neither me nor my character are depressed, we're just malcontents who make a lot of nerd references. I feel like the true essence of an "everything is worthless" perspective is lost on most pop-culture figures. The closest character I can think of at the moment is Rick from Rick and Morty, who is a drunk, angry nihilist that experienced tremendous loss. I, personally, find this belligerent state of mind to be very relatable, and have incorperated it into every chapter's introduction. Here, the main character talks directly to the reader (and me), shamelessly complaining about some semi-relevant facet of society, which probably doesn't make much sense... it's not really supposed to, though. These "angry nihilist" moments are just a peak into the main character's everyday existence, and also act as miniature rage-journals for me. It will sometimes take a subjectively 'positive' turn, but not very often. This is because reality isn't good or bad, "it just... is". I will eventually bring it full-circle to optimistic nihilism, since that seems to be a more practical way to live (and by "practical", I mean "doesn't create mental health issues"). It is, of course, a satire. I did this because most unnecessarily emotional moments or people usually make me feel kind of awkward, so I decided to mock them. That is, I plan to mock the characteristics about them I don't like in characters based solely off said characteristics. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy my story!

STAY DOWN |2020|
A/N: I was like 19 when I wrote this book. It's not my best work. 😭 Genesis Carter and Jeremiah "East" Wright thought that they had life all figured out until they met each other. Their romance was slow but sure, bringing a world of chaos along with it. Will they defy the odds and hold each other down? Or will unfortunate circumstances break them apart?
