《Ashes of the New World Book 1: The Divine World》Chapter 8: Sweet Dreams, Bitter Failure

Norah was standing alone in an arid sandy landscape with a bright blue sky, but there were no cacti, no animals, no wind, nothing. It was just an empty desert, she looked around for any sign of life.
“ Hello? Is anyone here? Where am I?” She called hoping someone was around. Then the woman Norah met in the tree came flying down from the sky. She landed on the grainy sand. Then a dark void opened a little distance from the woman. Out of the void rose a tall man wearing his dark cloak, and a dog skull. He wore one like a mask and one on each shoulder. Norah glanced at the two, her wings fanning out in alarm.
“ Who are you two? Where am I?”
“ You are still dreaming little one. We just entered in for a quick chat,” the woman responded with her sweet-song voice that caused the man to growl in disgust. Norah kept her wings out but relaxed her shoulders a little.
“ I’m Azrail the High God of Death. The King of Tartarus and the Master of the Hounds,” the man said as his voice echoed throughout the land.
“ I’m Vita the High Goddess of Life, and Queen of Heaven,” the way she spoke as if she was meeting Norah for the first time.
Norah’s eyes widened in shock and fear, mainly at Azrail. Oh great, the big dogs are coming to me, what do they want with me now…? Why is Vita acting so weird? Was it really her that talked to me earlier? Her thoughts echoed throughout the empty landscape.
“ There’s no point in being lost in thought. This is your head, sort of, so we know what you’re thinking,” said Azrail emotionlessly with a hint of annoyance, “ we came to see where your alliances stand.”
“ I have. But answer me this, please. What exactly is going on between you two? I mean I understand there’s a war, but what caused it?”

“ We are having a Cold War, if you will, trying to overthrow the other for the benefit of the world. We never could get the upper hand on each other since we were both equally balanced. I’m sure Azrail would love to fight me directly, but if we do that. Uh let’s say that the fabric of reality won’t like that,” Vita replies, giving Azrail nasty looks from the corner of her eye.
“ But why can’t you just talk it out and make peace? I’m aware you are both opposites, but I’m pretty sure you can talk it out like adults instead of fighting and risking people’s lives.”
“ Norah, you don’t know the crimes my sister, what Vita has done they are-“
“ False, I’m being falsely accused by a jealous brat who needs to stop calling me that. He isn’t fit to be a High God anymore so I need your help, Norah. Plus may I add his demons work with fallen angels.”
“ Fallen angels..they are the ones who killed Mama Willow! If Azrail works with fallen angels… that means Taurus has worked with them as well. Did he send them after us..?”
“ I did assign some fallen angels to help Taurus. What he did with them is beyond me.”
“ Norah, if you side with me I can guarantee your parents, and Mama Willow will be avenged. Think about it if you help me destroy him no one will ever die, you don’t have to worry about being without someone you care about,” Vita walked to Norah then stood her ground behind Norah. The thought Vita pitched to Norah made her smile and filled her with bliss, “ I knew I was going to choose you. But do you promise I never have to worry about my loved ones dying?”
“ Never ever.”
“ Vita! That idea is pure chaos! Immortality is reserved for the Gods not for mortals! If mortals stop dying then the world will be overpopulated, people won’t be relieved from suffering such as illnesses or wounds or old age! You both will condemn the world along with its inhabitants into an overpopulated Hell hole!”

“ But Mr. Azrail I can’t lose anyone… and you’re the reason Mama Willow, and all humans really are gone. I refuse to side with a heartless evil being.”
Azrail growled in annoyance, he stared at Vita with a deep hatred but all Vita did in response was smile politely. The High God of Death scoffed as a dark void opened beneath him, and slurped him into the darkness then it soon closed. Vita held Norah close to her side then wrapped Norah into a hug, Norah smiles in content hugging Vita back.
“ Welcome to the good side little Norah,” Vita praised.
A month later
Norah and Sean were up early in the morning training and mastering Norah’s powers. Quiver was watching their training, sitting on a stone with a proud expression on her face. We’ve stayed here for almost a month, waiting for the day we storm Tartarus. Norah has been working really hard together with Sean and Vita to perfect her powers, she’s doing well but I can tell she misses Taurus. I certainly don’t miss that psychopathic mutt, but something about this whole thing doesn’t feel right.
Meanwhile
Taurus trotted into Azrail’s throne room, his ears drooped down in fear. He looked up at Azrail sitting on the throne with the large, white, four-eyed wolf that wore a collar that had teeth jutting out of the collar. The large wolf snarled at Taurus glaring at him with intense fury.
“ Taurus. Allen. You failed to win the girl to our side now because of your failure Azrail will die soon, I hope you’re pleased with yourselves,” the wolf said in a condescending tone.
“ Alpha Hatsu, ye need to forgive us for our failures but we assure ye we have spent the past month making the necessary preparations for the insurance plan. As of now we have brought in someone to possibly help our cause,” Allen and Taurus’s voice talked in unison.
“ Show us then, and Hatsu calm yourself,” Azrail said with a calm voice.
Taurus perked his ears up and twitched his tail as if signaling someone to come. Footsteps echoed throughout the chamber with each passing second the footsteps grew with anticipation, then a figure walked to Taurus’s side.
“ Willow Bowman… how? I thought she was an angel,” Azrail got up from his throne going to the elderly elf to examine her. Everything was pretty much the same about her aside from her pitch-black wings and soulless light blue eyes.
“ I did die and became an angel, then Lord Allen here got me out of there after I did a few things. Now I’m the very thing that killed me. Quite ironic. Anyway, please King Azrail. I’m terribly sorry for my betrayal… I only wanted what was best for Norah,”
“ Yes, you have failed to raise either of them correctly. But I’m sure Allen has a plan to hopefully clean up your mistakes,” Azrail and Mama Willow headed out of the throne room leaving Hatsu and Taurus alone.
“ Taurus, how were you able to get Willow out of Heaven without Vita noticing?”
“ Well, you see, with help from my friend, Mirai, I was able to get Willow and her memories out of there while Vita was visiting Norah in her dreams. Vita is such a glaikit hackett witch I’m surprised she’s handled her role this long,” Taurus chuckled, grinning a little which caused Hatsu’s scruff fur to stand up a little out of instinct.
“ Explain to me how Willow will help us with the war?”
“ Willow is the one who raised Norah so they’re close and hopefully she will knock some sense into the kid before she makes a mistake,” Hatsu nodded in response then trotted out of the throne room with Taurus trailing behind him.

Dear Spellbook (Link to rewrite in blurb)
A rewrite of this story has been posted here: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/49881/dear-spellbook-a-fantasy-time-loop-rewrite Live. Study. Repeat. Tal is a sorcerer in a world where they are killed on sight, traveling with a man charged with carrying out the task. Every night Tal must pretend to study his spellbook to maintain his disguise as a Wizard’s Apprentice. If his disguise slips and his charade is uncovered, it will be his death. Seeking answers to mysteries that arose after his parent’s murder, Tal must accept any allies, no matter the risks, to uncover his family’s secret. But when he wakes up one morning to find himself trapped repeating the same day, he has to overcome his challenges all on his own. This story is an adaptation of a D&D campaign I ran but never was able to complete. I tried to capture the feel of a table-top RPG session —tropes and humor— without relying on the mechanics. This is not a litRPG or gamelit story and no D&D mechanics or system appear in the game. It follows one member of an adventuring party as he deals with the problems with that arise from being an adventurer. Namely, getting roped into adventures. The story has a time loop element, but will eventually move past that. This story explores the magic systems, the history, and the lore of the world through the lens of Tal's entries in his Spellbook and interludes from other written works in the world. New entries on Mondays Credit to JackOfHearts for the cover.
